Wow! That’s a whole load of completely unsubstantiated assumptions to make.
Pristine = brand new warranty replacement but as I said, if you don’t have the cash I won’t be wasting his time anyway.

good luck finding a better deal

a friend has a pristine TRC for sale. no expense spared on the build and the frame is just the right size for you. He’ll sell frame or complete bike.

    No messing him about tho.

how much money do you have available?

Wow! so much naivety regarding BMX here.

Race BMXs are not low geared.
riding a BMX for a few miles each day will not ruin your knees.
riding standing up for a few miles each day will do wonders for your core fitness which can only really be an asset to your general mtb fitness.
in built up areas a race BMX over short distances is easily as fast as roadbike commuters. infact. in really built up areas, lights to lights, once you’re used to it you’ll destroy most roadies.
Police will not stop you riding on pavements on a BMX and will even turn a blind eye to RLJ if you do it on pedestrian crossings on a green man.
biggest downside IME is lack of mudguards on a bike that begs to be accelerated repeatedly on rainy days.

But your answer perfectly sums up why messing around with parts isn’t a waste of time and money

That, AFAIC. Depends massively on how much the rider actually rides their bike.
This “sport” is full of folk who change parts, frames, entire bikes far too often in search for perfection/an advantage without ever getting close to pushing the current bike/part/bike anywhere close to it’s potential or getting properly used to the bike.

    There’s nothing wrong with disagreeing.
the only FACT here is that there’s no such thing as perfect bicycle geometry. It’s all a compromise one way or another. But one thing is for sure, knocking 1 or 2deg off a Bfe’s H/A is not going to make any notable difference to it’s rider’s overall speed or ability to ride anything.

My dropper has it’s uses. but has sat unfitted for 4 months. I think you have a fair idea how much I ride and how much variety there is in my riding.

    Droppers do have their place.

What I always said is.. Droppers ATM are shit… and on the whole this hasn’t changed much yet.
they are not designed very well and have nowhere near the range of travel required.

I think you’d actually agree with a lot of that even though the extremes of your riding are not the same as mine.

I will explain when we ride next. it would take an essay.

my experience comes from years and years of riding 100mm fork DJ hardails as proper all rounders (ie’ everything from DJ-XC-Park-DH-Commuter) beginning over 20 years back with the norm (at the time) 71-73deg HA. then experimenting with slacker H/As right down to 62deg and coming back to what I have been riding for the last decade (not that far off the Geometry of a small Bfe with a slammed fork)
there are plus’s and negatives of going slacker and steeper and everything is a compromise. just as going longer and shorter (front-centre and CS length) is, and BB height and of course we also have the importance of choosing appropriate compromise regarding fork length, travel and bar/stem set-up (all of this is just as important as the H/A).
it’s a hugely interesting (to me) subject and needs discussed from the very basics up, not really worth me typing forever about for a (happily) ignorant audience such as here that’s mainly “fashion” led, naive and blinkered.

Ah.. 50psi sounds fair enough then Badlywired dog. I’d run somewhere in the 37-42psi range for all round use including rocky trails, mid 20s for XC racing in muddy fields/non technical woods at 3st less than you.

No, I’m not absolutely sure- just as you have no idea whether it’s better or worse.

That’s where you’re wrong. I actually could tell you what would be better, what would be worse and why.

Did you know every new part you’ve ever fitted was going to be perfect?

*perfect as in achieved the correct fit and geometry for me and my riding style? for the last 10 years or so, pretty much, yes.

    annoyingly so.

cost doesn’t extend to setting up the shifters so you can use them from the drops?

Aye, I hear team SKY were a bit too strapped for cash to set up this guy’s to your taste too

Are you actually sure the geometry of a Bfe is improved rather than compromised by changing it’s head angle?
if so, please do tell us what exactly the optimum head angle should be?

    and more importantly, why.

Wow! Chris, that reasoning is so utterly nonsensical it actually blows my mind! 8O

have you ever thought about why they drop a foot?
is it to add counter weight to aid grip or is it simply a safety mechanism as they are not 100% confident in holding their line?

I’m still riding those old red 636 DX Spds and newer SPDs and flats.

nothing has really improved or changed in SPD technology in 15 years. infact, if anything my old DX pedals are better than newer SPDs.

Chris. Why on earth do you say not to try and ride like you are on flats?
You shouldn’t be removing a foot on flats approaching “technical bits” either.

there are advantages and disadvantages to both flats and SPDs but there is a huge crossover between getting the best from both and only a very slight adjustment to riding technique is required to switch from one to the other.

I learned age 7 on a roadbike and by 8 could wheelie all the way home from school (a mile) I don’t actually rely on a brake wheelying or manualing. when I wheelie one handed it’s always my left hand (back brake) I remove from the bars and on my roadbike I often wheelie with my hands on the tops (no brake cover whatsoever and clipped in with no helmet). Once you have achieved trust in your ability clipped or flat makes little difference.

Why are folk running CX tyres at 50psi?

    mtbel

good air = keep weight centred
    high air = pump
    style = practice

other than paying attention to approach speed it really is that simple.

Yeah, there is that Sanny.. it’s still all about the terrain or the speed for me though I’m afraid. Plus nice as they are, I’ve seen all of East Lothian’s trails and views far too many times to ever see them as interesting anymore.

Do you ever bring a normal mtb over? next time you’re at Coastkid HQ we should meet up and we could show you some inland E.L. trails, mibbie stop at the local distillery or a nice wee local pub.

East Lothian is famed for it’s cottaging spots and with Yogadoat only just back from foreign travels hungry for Scottish beef any first time Enduroists certainly won’t be disappointed ;). Bring yer own apres ride snacks as any local will tell ye “There’s nae burger van on Pencraig Hill” ;)

Ps. Thanks for organising this BIG STW ride Jimmy. I don’t know what we’d have done without your hard work and commitment.

No Kimberly the word “gay” isn’t an insult. Never has been. It’s a genre of sexuality. I haven’t disclosed mine. ;)

Now would be a good time to apologise for your insult though.

As proven in Tired’s pics, it’s already a bit daft. Go 50mm stem rather than moving the saddle.. plenty cheap ones around.

#Enduro, as experienced by mountain bikers who don’t race in deadly earnest, is above all fashion.

Sure, the bikes are incredibly exciting etc. But it’s the first time I can remember where most riders are paying really serious attention to looking awesome.

It’s blanketed in thick irony, of course, but the aesthetic is very strong and huge numbers of people at the races are going for it very hard: flatteringly cut clothes in really bright colours and bold patterns, extreme colour-coordination, goggles worn rakishly on the helmet, and legions of photographers on hand to catch everyone throwing great #pro-elbows shapes.

We are dressing the part, and enjoying doing it. More important even than the fact that this is a race format for hobbyists who struggle with traditional formats, it’s an aesthetic for people who weren’t into DH, were repulsed by XC lycra and who understood deep down that the previous “trail riding” look of black baggies, black shirt (possibly with a word written on the front) and grey helmet just wasn’t very fabulous. Those guys have discovered the joy of wearing matching cyan shorts and shirt with bold cerise panels, topped off with a fluo-yellow lid and mirror-goggles, and they are loving it. Quite Gay

    It’s good to see.

Openly Embracing your “Gay” really has been the missing aspect in Cycling for far too long and I for one applaud the Enduroists for bringing it to the forefront of their sport.

OP is pretty incoherent and the title says 26er. :?
ie. what does this *(CF the 29er I use as a cx bike)* mean?

If keeping the geometry as the manufacturer intended is of importance to you, you’d be better using a 26″ frame with 700 wheels and CX tyres than using a 29er frame with CX tyres IMO

Post on the FB group. I ride most days or nights. What do you ride?

    I’m not saying it changes.
I’m saying mtb frames usually have slacker H/A than CX frames.

    mtbel
    Free Member

700×35 is not all that different diameter to 26×2.35 so handling should be fine.
the 3cm longer frame shouldn’t be all that big a problem as to quicken up the steering i’d be wanting to run a shorter stem than usual anyway(I’m presuming the mtb has a slacker HA by a couple of deg.)

Someone who trains to be the best at a very short course (in miles or kms to keep you happy) should be absolutely spanked by someone who trains to ride longer courses that also include significant climbs. If that doesn’t happen then someone’s training is going badly wrong.

And yet Ruaridh spanks Farry at enduro races held on their own mannor ?
    Hmmm… :?
