    I wouldn’t attempt. I’d achieve.

I personally find it easier to control the bikes dip in the air from a manual which helps allow me to land more smoothly (especially when dropping using a hardtail or BMX)

Never had to manual a fastish drop as I’ve never approached one that I’ve commited to on the brakes

I’m too tired to even begin to comprehend what this sentence is meant to mean.
    night all.

    anyone who can manual Tom.
and anyone who can manual well can save a dropped front wheel when being a fanny

if you can’t manual. I wouldn’t necessarily expect you to understand just how far back you can get your weight. if you can manual well. you should be able to hold your front wheel an inch from the ground while rolling. think about how far back your centre of gravity has to be to hold this.

in the first pic his weight is not properly back.
his cranks are level rather than rear pedal dropped. (which means he isn’t pushing forward with his feet).
and his knees are bent too much. straighter would put his weight way further back.

    classic 5:10/SPD poor footwork*

*Oh how I hate skillz course terminology but it’s what folk here understand

NW. that dude’s weight isn’t back. he’s squatted down instead. maybe he had a particularly difficult to remove tugnut ;)

makes perfect sense to get your wheels down as quickly as possible on “some” drops. others not much. the actual drops could be really similar it’s what’s after them that makes most difference.
some you’ll want to manual over
    others push down
    others pre-jump
others launch to the best landing.

Which drop? and what was after it?

    Who taught you that Jim?
    Seems odd.
you can manual off a drop and still land perfectly centred both wheels at a time. or was this a beginners skills lesson?

    where was the drop?

    You think anyone here does?

. a few folk “here” actually KNOW it is true.

Junkyard. did you ever even stop to think that it might simply have been an honest reply? or are you always far too busy trying to WIN teh intarnetz?

I rode mtb on Monday afternoon for an hour, a 3.5hr road ride yesterday morning, a 1 hour evening mtb ride then 2.5 hours on the road this afternoon. Tomorrow I’ll probably ride BMX

only 2 of those hours were mtb padawan ;)

alternatively. ride 40miles this weekend, 50 the next, 60 the next… you get the idea ;)

ignore the sportive, save your money and just go out and ride the same route. if you are semi fit you shouldn’t need to train to do 70odd flat miles. I’d suggest you do it in the evening as kebab shops and chippies will be open if you feel hungry/thirsty and the roads will be so quiet it’ll feel like you have your own personal road closures.
Don’t forget to zip-tie a number on your bike and buy a wee plastic medal from a toy shop to go with the “certificate of achievement” you’ve printed out at home.

Damn! you mean the 8 hours I’ve ridden so far this week have been a waste of time?

Any tips on typing this “bullshit” you speak of? and how many hours a week do I need to put in to compete with your posting history?

    beginner to racing DH
    UK National.
    riding at weekends mainly.
Awesomeness on an mtb = skillz.

Nah… time to pay attention to the weather forecast and not head up the steepest climb in the area into a 40mph snowstorm dressed for summer ;).

But, yeah a lowest sprocket bigger than 25 would have helped (it was too slippy to stand up  )

Have done it in 52/25 (coz I’m a ‘tard and thought I’d already changed down to the wee ring ages before)

Oh hora… I despair at your incompetence. No. I haven’t had any frames for sale at any time during the last decade. I suggest you go back and read your tired, pointless, time wasting thread properly.

same way some bikes feel lighter than they are

I absolutely HATE this stupid over used statement. it’s utter bollocks and I can only assume it’s regurgitated by riders who have a far from dynamic riding style.

750b is horrible Vs 26″ though.. not so much to do with acceleration just the simple physics of gyroscopic direction change and a taller axle height ;)

So, i’ve been steadily improving my MTB skills over the last 3 years. Nothing major, nowhere near “awesome” skillz, but recently i’ve kinda felt i am hitting a bit of a plateau and not improving much.

Sorry to break it to you but if you mean AWESOME skills you’ll probably never get there!
3 years is about how long it takes to go from complete beginner to winning a National DH races.
To maintain that level of AWESOMENESS requires about 2hrs mtb riding per week, if that.

Good wee turn out last night for Jimmy’s ride and a mix of new and old faces ;)
a bit shorter route than planned with the large(ish) group and the mechanicals but still a decent wee taste of what the flatlands of EL has to offer I think.. nice wee night in the pub after too.
Guess you didn’t make it either Andyfb78. Don’t worry, I’m sure there will be many more to come

Redheughs Rigg = nae luck. I know where I’ll be watching that stage.

Do you mean Redstone Rig? in the Lammies?

Stage 4 passes a mile from my house but I’d expect most local roadies will set themselves up to watch on the climbs between Giford and Duns. with Redstone rig being the most brutal of them.

Pity it wasn’t last month so they could have snow blizzards to make it a real test ;)

Mud tyres? it was a wee bit muddy on Sunday but nothing a bald DHfs and a bling bling on the back couldn’t handle. Bear in mind the trails there require very little braking.

    Mtbel I assume you agree.

Never make assumptions as far as I’m concerned Hora.

Most of what you type on here regarding bicycles is utter nonsense based on nothing more than stupidity and fashionable jargon. It’s rarely even worth reading nevermind commenting on.

climbing stood up requires fitness (obvs) but also strength and conditioning.
I used to do upto 2 hour rides on a dirt jump bike with a slammed saddle (just CBA raising it) and rode BMX for hours so thought nothing of doing 12mile trailcentre loops with 2000ft or so of climbing entirely stood up. it wasn’t the most efficient way to climb or the quickest I just didn’t find it uncomfortable.
I’m riding my roadbike a lot more again these days so I tend to climb seated on the mtb a lot more as a result. can still manage a 20min climb standing if I want to.

I’ll be out west of the city.

folk who are good at cycling are often good at more than one discipline as the cross over of skills and fitness is huge. without trying to put you down it doesn’t sound as if you’re all that good at one discipline but if you are still having fun keep doing whatever makes you happy. seems daft to train yourself into the ground and miss out on having fun just to be mediocre though.

Fatbikes are the epitome of what Monkeyfcuker said. absolutely horrendously inefficient to pedal stood up on but will plug on fine if sat down like a sack of spuds spinning away in an appropriate gear steering in a non dynamic fashion.

a bikes inefficiency is not just about the bikes overall weight though.
