I’ve always loved the circus. not been since the end of last summer though.
a friend of mine joined a circus instead of finishing her PHd. Met up with them for a weekend by the coast in Wales. great summer job.. ‘bit grim in winter.

There is a rider here. and he’s been already been quoted a 310lb spring by TFs calc for his 3″ stroke shock DH bike.

You can’t seriously be saying a 210lb or 410lb spring would be adequate unless you are either completely clueless or just looking for a pointless argument.

    give it up, please.

Hill is a massive exception to this rule. a small guy who runs a pretty high saddle with flat pedals but if you watch him ride, he actually uses the saddle to aid grip and weight the bike through corners like no other rider clipped or flat. it’s insanely good to watch how he does this.

If you think your saddle is too high, look at some photos of the pros’ downhill bikes. 99% are clipped in and all are riding 8″+ suspension

exactly as Much higher than you I‘d expect.

Tim Flooks is great at what he does.
This does not mean every piece of information relayed over his telephone is gold.
I lived local to the original TF workshop when he first opened and as he wasn’t crazy busy I spent an afternoon with him setting up my shock. He was brilliant and I left with pretty much everything I wanted done. Most riders don’t even know what they want, nevermind able to convey it in a short telephone call.

Don’t try to turn this into some personal gripe it only makes you look sad and bitter.

Only getting with in 100lb of your ideal rear shock spring weight means your fancy DH bike was probably a bit of a waste of money. Do you even realise how huge that is now that almost all DH frames run very low leverage ratios?

SPDs allow you to descend in confidence without dropping your heels or rotating your rear pedal back and also allow you to pick up the bike without first pre-loading the pedals. you simply need less room to squat down and move around a bike when clipped in therefore the saddle doesn’t need to be as far out the way.
a 2ft bunnyhop clipped in is fairly easy with the saddle at full extension but on flats you’d struggle to get that high without dropping the saddle. try it?

Full sus bikes do not require as much saddle drop as hardtails either but I’ll let you work out why for yourselves on that one.

sorry to break this to you bud. 5″ is most definitely small

TF who said to have a slightly higher rated spring for jumps/drops and a lower one for smoother stuff

“really good advice from TF”? er.. No mikewsmith not this time  .
Why would anyone want a softer spring rate for smooth terrain? think about this for a minute, eh?
the difference between a 300 and 350 will be slightly more sag and slightly easier to bottom out. some riders like to run more sag than others. I do.. it’s entirely down to personal preference. a softer set up can offer more grip in really muddy/soft conditions as well as a lower BB for more stability. A stiffer spring will be better for pedalling (ie. smooth flat terrain)

that extra 1mm free length is irrelevant.. ideally you never want to run more than about 2 turns of pre-load on any coil spring.

spring rate tolerance/variance is an even bigger reason to have more springs to choose from, try and decide for yourself.

from full pedalling extension height 5″ drop is hardly anything.
especially if you ride flat pedals.
I slam my saddle by between 9-11″ if I’m jumping, messing around or riding super steep stuff. even just manualing 5″ drop isn’t really enough to give you room to move around.
But when I’m clipped in I rarely drop it at all.

165/6 refers to overall spring free length. 76 refers to shock stroke.

240 refers to eye to eye length but is somewhat irrelevant to choosing your spring as it’s possible to have differing eye to eye lengths but the same stroke length and vice versa.

get a 300 and a 325. try both and see which you prefer.

Same reason folk fit frame bags and water bottles on every conceivable bare bit of their bicycle frame or fork to ride their local beach at an average of 5mph for an hour and a half. surely you of all people must ‘get’ that by now?

Ps. have you ever seen the average GS owner attempt to ride off road?

Yeah.. as a stand alone hollywood action movie thunderdome ticks all the boxes as will this new one no doubt.

Thunderdome just isn’t really in the same genre as the first two MAD MAX films. that’s all.

Acting NEVER came into how cool the first MAD MAX films were.

This new one will be shit but probably quite pretty and ultimately harmless since Thunderdome ruined MAD MAX already.

You are one of a tiny minority on an mtb forum who’s actually interested in folk racing something slightly more technical than european cobbles.
Today is track walk day. tomorrow will be first practice sessions.
for all the vids from the next few days check out Vitalmtb, Pinkbike, RedbullTV and maybe dirtTV.

Smallest size frame you can handle and fit a nice stiff 100mm fork.
Geometry then gives a nice low BB. nice H/A for a 40-50mm stem and at least a 2″ riser bar.
Bfe’s feel ok up to 120mm. shit after that!

Bit heavy though.. pity they don’t come in Aluminium with slightly shorter chainstays.

don’t park too far from the ice cream shop though or you will need to purchase £500 worth of frame bags, water bottles and hip flasks.

Presuming you already have a bicycle?
Simply let out all the air out of your tyres and half fill them with water then ride to an ice cream shop along a beach. pretty much the same sensation for a fraction of the cost

On a DH bike I do. though you may be disappointed to learn they’ll be plain black instead of lego or transformers designs.

They’re way tougher when you end up breakdancing down hills.. if that’s your definition of gnar fair play.
