Thanks Haze. that sounds a far more sensible opinion. ;)

On the turbo in your garage? sweet!

[EDIT] this comment was aimed at my good friend Legend, no need for anyone else to get their knickers in a twist

DONK, with respect, I was interested in Haze’s opinion on what he thought our priorities should be. Not yours. Your wee outburst doesn’t even make a whole load of sense.

funnily enough mtb shoes are designed for pedalling in too. :? and Float certainly isn’t a negative thing for everyone.

Forget the relevance of other riders Lifer. My point was simply that your choice of pedal system very unlikely to be the cause of your discomfort after 40 mins of pedalling on the road. I’m 99% sure you could pedal in properly set up SPD’s and better fitting shoes just as happily as your Look/DHB combo. Hell.. I’d happily set you up.. the going rate these days seems to be £150 + the profit from the sale of the shoes/pedals.

Go on then Haze, I’m interested… What should our priorities be?

Worth thinking about how many road pros use MTB shoes and pedals?

    ha ha.. it’s really not

I’m inclined to dismiss advice from blokes who walk like a duck… doesn’t mean it’s bad advice. quack quack!! 8)

The tri bars are to allow him to ride with less weight on his arse apparently rather than aero gainz

    I’m confused!
What are you actually trying to achieve here?
11-9T for BMX is micro drive (completely different freehub system) only introduced to alow tiny rings for clearance/fashion
Shimano compatible BMX is for racing <12T won’t handle Teh Awesumz Torques so well.

I know nothing about Moultons really but always thought they’d use Capreo or something?

What are you talking about? (elaborate, please?)
shimano make BMX hubs. they’re not particualarly expensive in the grand scheme of all things BMX.
Don’t you work in the “industry” anymore?

FFS! Now you tell me… I rode 120 miles in horrendous driving wind and rain a few weeks back. If I’d only known fitting “LOOK” pedals would have made the day nicer

Assuming you still have mtb pedals and shoes and some sort of GPS you could actually test how insignificant (or not) the difference is.

Try to be honest with yourself and remember to adjust your seatpost height accordingly ;)

how much faster are you now Haze?

FFS! tighten the retaining tension bolt on your pedals or buy new cleats Neil.

lol. No they don’t. even if you ride bigger distances.

The main difference is not having to walk like a **** if you stop.

Glad to be proven wrong with significant concrete data.

it’s fine Northyboy.. just STOP using the phrase *”need” a roadbike for…*. and the world will be right once more. ;)

    lol.

come out with me down the coast and see how comfortable they are heading home into a 50mph westerly.

I didn’t actually mention comfort at all Teasel. But since you bring it up, unless NW is using drop bars and road brifters on his “flat bar hybrid”. No it won’t have the same options for comfortable positioning for road riding as my roadbike does. no real debate needed on that one.

OK let’s rephrase- I’d be happy doing anything on it that you “need” a road bike for, that I would do if I had a road bike. The fact that it’s flatbarred makes no difference to me over a road bike in other words. Other than that I like riding it

    just lol

once you’ve counted the universal cycling stuff, getting out in our gorgeous countryside, bit of exercise, etc all you’ve got is the perverse (hurting yourself) and the **** bollocks (purity). I personally get it

Do you though? I’m not so sure you do.

what about descending less than perfect roads wearing only lycra with no helmet, knee pads or other mtb nonsense at 50mph+?
what about hitting corners at just the right speed, you know.. perfect entry speed, line and you feel your tyres just on the edge of letting go and if you even touch your brake you’ll be off the road?
What about chasing and drafting a bus on the flat, face 2 feet from the back at 40mph+ spinning out while concentrating on it’s brake light and where you are with no line of sight.
or simply buzzing through busy traffic, overtaking cars, riding in a fast bunch, riding fast at night, riding in poor conditions?
it’s really not all just about the views, purity bollocks (WTF?)or punishing yourself.

riding my roadbike can give me just as much of a buzz as hitting a 50ft double on my hardtail used to.

    View not quite good enough?
    scared of traffic?
    scared of mud?
    scared of cold?
    scared to wear lycra?
scared of a quick handling bike and perectly adequate brakes ???
    scared to even try it?

Wow! I feel sorry for you.

All the “it’s dull” comments here are actually quite funny! road riding is only as dull as the rider chooses to make it. I can only imagine how RAD you guys must get when trundling around on your shiny mud free mtbs.

Owned a roadbike since before mtb was thought of and probably always will. Have always ridden them off road too. But wouldn’t ever want a. CX bike – too much of a compromis.. Basically I find them rubbish for everything other than CX racing.

it actually jumps really well with all that weight down low and spinning in the wheels!

    No. it really doesn’t!

folk who aren’t very good at jumping can feel more stable in the air on heavier wheels/tyres though.

I can explain tomorrow why it doesn’t “jump really well” in far more detail if you like.

Nothing. I ride just as much all winter. love riding in mud, ice and snow.

cleaning the bike takes 5mins including re-lubing the chain.

I can remember how to get to every place I’ve ever been to.

me too.. is this unusual? never really understood how it’s possible for anyone not to… and I have absolutely terrible short term memory.

Assuming you don’t have weird/badly routed hose there should be absolutely no need for the hose to be perfectly straight.
    Why would there be?

im hanging on for a 180mm rear 200 up front what a toy that could be

    why hang on?

plenty older DH forks can take a 3.7″ tyre easily and plenty older DH frames will run a 3″ tyre. they’re stupidly cheap S/H too.

    The future is 2004 ;)
