if you mean trail centre ones, there are a couple on Matador DH track folk on here rave about.

if you mean bigger “stunts” get yourselves up to Falkland

that’ll be because you’ve “got” nothing..

there’s the option to view the leaderboard on any strava segment just showing results from this year though.

    “1. Bar height
If you are 6′ tall or less, aim to have the tops of your bars a bit over your saddle height…”

    Sciencefact!

I always seem to ride with my hands pretty much hanging off the ends of the grips rather than holding fully on.

    I’ve always done this too..
I don’t like comfortable grips either and my palms have indents from the outer lock-on collars, nothing wrong with it. there are no hard and fast rules.

lock on grips with only one collar don’t work for me, but I’ve also spun many other folks grips that have never budged for the owner within minutes of riding their bikes.

…might be quite cool for those of you with flared wrists.

sticking STi designed to be ergonomic on a vertical plane at 54deg on flared bars is an absolutely stupid idea otherwise.

Yes. I have tried the awful things and they certainly are not more confidence inspiring or more comfortable to use anywhere where you need to brake or change gear.

    as for cool? GTF!

I barely get my tyre under my Reba, bloody stupid bridge design.

    True!
if you ride in properly claggy muddy places even after cutting a section out and heating it to conform to the Reba arch there won’t be enough clearance for your tyre to clear of mud so the mudguard will act as a mud funnel constantly stopping your wheel turning.
the only solution to this is to either remove the mudguard, or to fit a narrower/mud specific tyre.

Forget what’s en vogue, most of these fashion whores aren’t pushing their tyres close to their limit of grip anyway.

wider rims is just the new purple

You either can’t time pedal strokes very well or you learn how.. guess some of you eventually learned.

5mm makes **** all difference to pedal clearance.
5mm makes a slight difference to comfortable cadence speed.
5mm makes a bigger difference to knee comfort.

I do notice all of the above, no idea if OP will.

eh? it’s just a Sportive. there’s no need for a training plan just gradually increase the distance on your longer rides as and when you have time.

Back to my previous comment. I’m a cyclist when I’m cycling whereas lots of of folk are cyclists even when they’re not.

I agree, have always thought of you as a walker who rides a bike.

me, on my roadbike, yes, usually.
    on my BMX, never
    MTBs not very often.

“bike rider” is not the same as “cyclist” IMO.

I regularly ride 2-3hours on an empty stomach. As with Mister P. I eat lots throughout the day.. I’m only ever hungry in the morning if I’ve done a long nightride or had hardly any sleep the night before .

Keep at it, your body will adjust.

Shimano freehubs are more of a problem than the bearings. but there’s still nothing wrong with Al’s choice (for him). Even when a shimano freehub does die you usually get a little notice and it’s still usually possible to engage the pawls to limp home.

this never ending question does my head in.

no one ever bothers to describe their riding or themselves.
what’s good for a fair weather lightweight may well be shit for a tough mile munching pie.

Also. WTF is a longer distance bike? :?

I think the biggest issue is Strava blogging.
Many riders are too busy chasing times taking pictures and therefore they are straight lining the twists and turns that make trail riding a fun and challenging part of the experience to get back to their computers and tell the world.

    ;)

Rode with you once, years back. The ride kinda dull and uneventful and I didn’t actually know who you were until months after the ride.
    Welcome back to bicycle riding.

commuting on a “racing” bike is Ace.
Faster than any other bike and in built up areas and busy traffic faster than any other form of transport and not laden with ten tons of shit they handle superbly.

I also run every red that I deem safe to, always have, always will.

I haven’t watched the video or read any comments here other than the last few. Truth is I just don’t care about debating decisions made by other cyclists I have no connection to.

a steep chute on a trail can be exactly the same molgrips.

    mtbel

You simply need to learn how to filter out the dross. Both here and in your magazines.

The shortest steepest adult bikes you’ll find are BMX’s (Which also have relatively high BBs) and they’re designed for dropping into vert ramps. once you’ve dropped into a few properly tall vert ramps you won’t be phased by sledging down steep chutes on your mountainbike.
Steep only becomes difficult when you add in corners and cambers and it’s the terrain that dictates what bike/tyres will ride it those best not the gradient.

Doncha just love it when second hand advice is passed on chinese whisper style by keen noobs after skills training.

keep COG low & weight centred (which by default becomes further back the steeper the angle of the line between your bike’s wheel axles).

some right nonsense is being spouted here on this subject.
