How wide is sensible does seem to be linked to shoulder width.

You should have quoted this after lopping his stupid beard off.

I’ve always thought of the “Deore” prefix on XT to be there for one reason and one reason only.
to devalue the model just enough for idiots with more money than sense to part with almost twice the money to have the top level XTR moniker adorning their groupset despite it having no discernable improvement in function.

Pipe down Stevie. Get back to playing isn’t she lovely on the piano.

TBF Stevie is a better judge of what looks good than 95% of folk on here.
There’s a 100000+ post thread with every second reply drooling over a shitey touring bike with slightly wider tyres on here FFS.

it’s an older Manitou Ti spring Loco. if you remember they were one of the lightest Ti springs available at the time due to far less coil winds than many others.
but measure the free space between most Ti springs and you’ll find more space to compress than the equivalent steel spring.
without doubt there’s slightly more risk of failure from over compression but that’s no biggie. like I said, had it happen with the correct stroke steel springs.

checked that Loco. mine’s nowhere near coil bound when compressed 3″. obvs. check this first by measuring the free space between coils.

there’s a good chance a 500lb x 2″ stroke Ti spring will work out fine for you too.
Ti coils are generally less tightly wound so there is more free space when compressed. Obviously check free length will fit and that you don’t require lots of pre-load. It’ll be lighter (assuming this is part of your reasoning behind choosing Ti) and in theory, slightly less durable. but in practice I’ve found doing this fine. I’m still running the 2.5″ stroke Ti spring I fitted to my 3″ stroke DHX 5 years ago with no problems and have previously snapped FOX steel springs.

Wow! so much to reply to. hope I don’t miss anyone but here goes…

Pregnant? yeah, probably she was my nextdoor neighbour and the whole family moved away very shortly afterwards leaving no forwarding address. still quite a shameful thing for a family in those days I can tell you.

Can a bunny hop be executed no handed on flats? Not sure anyone here will be able to handle the truthful answer but, Yes, a tiny bunny hop can be executed without holding the bars so long as the saddle can be gripped strongly enough between the legs when picking up the rear. Unfortunately it will end up looking less than impressive and much more like a lame bunnyhop-no hander due to only letting go of the bars just before the rear wheel leaves the ground.

kudos100 – Thanks, but Petelance? No that would be arrogance, I’m right though so I feel entitled. Childish? Yeah. I hold my hand up to that accusation whole heartedly and this has been said of me many many times. Petulance though? Nothing here has ever been worthy of getting angry/huffy/bad tempered over.

    ads – mibbie yer maw?

Junkyard – honestly? can’t believe you’ve ever “nailed” anything/one ever!

neal – aw, bless.. I hope your mum doesn’t come in and catch you typing such strong language at strangers online.

    Tom – meeeeoooww!

Oh.. good I see MrTorque is now here to take over. direct any further questions towards him please?

kissing girls is for when it’s too dark/wet to jump 20ft doubles.

my first kiss was age 4, funnily enough the same summer I first jumped my bike off a ropey wooden ramp.

I actually happen to understand empathy better than most DONK. As you seem to have noticed I have a huge gap in the ability empathise with whiney people who don’t really deserve it. Once upon a time I thought there was something important missing from my personality/social skills but weighing up the evidence and looking at it subjectively I came to realise it wasn’t worth worrying about. not one bit.

and No. there is no pulling up of bars required. think about how one “ollies” a skateboard. it’s the same basic procedure.

“Trolling” is just another new a bullshit concept too Junkyard. I just call a spade a spade. always have. always will.

so he can spend X amount of hours figuring it out for himself or he can ask for advice and manage it in X – Y hours. So who’s the daft one here?

    Nah..

You simply need to actually spend time riding your bike, you know… for fun instead of talking about it in algebraic terms and then worrying about wasting your time. You might even meet other riders in real life and learn from each other.

didn’t learn any of it on an mtb. hadn’t even heard of one.

so pay me neal and I’ll happily meet you and show you.
or simply come over and I can give you that slap in the knackers so you can get some real perspective on which is moar helpful

forgive me for not embracing modern life but I learned all of the above before any of the jargon was dreamed up, before there were mtb coaches and indeed before there was an internet to ask for advice on. it’s really not very difficult to figure out if you simply ride your bike enough.

    Could you explain that one?

    Yes.
the correct procedure is push* your bars forwards when you have the front end high enough in the preceding manual.. I’m assume that you know how to manual?

*Push by weight shift as Steve explained above.

I use App manager III to move stuff to SD (think it used to be called APP2SD)

    mtbel

probably just running shed loads of un needed apps.
I’m still on a cheapy Xperia Tipo as I hate big phones and the battery lasts 4x as long as any of my mates fancy phones. it only has 521mb internal ram and copes fine with everything you use yours for. it has a 32G SD card almost full of music/pics. if free memory becomes lower than 100mb it noticeably slows up.

Move as many apps as you can onto your SD and delete all the guff you don’t really use from the internal memory.

I find the Facebook app to be the worst offender for stealing internal memory. Delete all the data from it once in a while.

amedias. For similar reasons to you I ran a middle and a granny ring for about a year with a front mech fitted but no shifter. I set front mech set in the middle position by using a section of brake inner from the last frame cable guide stop to the pinch bolt and to change gear all I had to do was pull the front mech outwards a little releasing the cable from the slot and the lower limit screw would hold the mech in the granny gear position. The mech was there for chain retention more than anything. (this was pre-Narrow/wide days)

is it on a case by case basis depending on weight/riding style etc?

    Yes. very much
10-15% for all my forks. (95-200mm)
lots of sag might be fine if you ride seated most of the time and rarely push it but it’s horrible bordering on dangerous when actually riding hard.

Basically the more you mince the more sag you can run on your fork.

You don’t need to wear the knee pads silly, they’re just another nice excuse to have in your bag for when you’re worrying about riding the next section. ;)

It’s also handy to wind it all the way out when you get to somethign really steep.

Whereas a confident rider would simply get on with it.

travel adjusters on forks are great for insecure faff queens.
    See knee pads also.

Aye, that’s obvs an option too.
Also after you reach Walkerburn you can head over to Traquair and up the fire road and end with the DH track of your choice before heading back to the car. (or are you proper local?)

it’s ace! mellow but neverending turns.. (actually pretty tiring on a hardtail) you’ll love it, haven’t ever ridden it with anyone who hasn’t.
