depends what your definition of XC is but as mentioned above, they are your knees, go for it.

I understand that Kyle Straits are the current weapon of choice

I rode it recently and really enjoyed it, the penultimate descent over the doubles, kickers and down the big berms is awesome.

however, the singletrack climbing for the first 20 minutes or so is also good, then some fireroad and then more singletrack, across the top of the hills and then around ‘the Edge section’ is great fun. It’s got a bit of everything.

Here’s a video of my 7 stanes trip last week featuring bits of Ae as well as others

great review troutie, lovin this bit

I did a very non techy test (of) the seal this involved sucking with the whole bezel in my mouth to create a vacuum and you can soon tell if it is sealed and it passed with flying colours no leaks there.

and that is why we have to be very careful about giving the police any additional powers in the UK.

So really, as my 36’s have slighly worn uppers, I could buy Enduro Seals, fit them and forget any worries? Would it be difficult?

i have fitted enduro fork seals, it still happens

the only surprise to me is that this is news to anyone. it’s been the same since I can remember.

Same thing happened to me, (cue similar pic to gonfishin’s)

I too was gutted when I first discovered the wear on mine about three years ago. I already knew they needed a service and was considering sending them off to Mojo/TF/wherever.

However, the obvious wear persuaded me there would be no loss in trying to service them myself. If i c*cked it up I could just send them off for a proper service or buy some new forks. So I stripped them down and degreased/cleaned and put back together again with fresh fork oil and taught myself much more about bike monkeying.

Since then, the wear hasn’t really got any worse but I now strip them down regularly (did it last night in about 90 mins for my forthcoming 7 stanes trip) and feel much happier doing it myself.

I agree that it’s easier to totally strip down rather than try to lift a seal and then replace with the stanchion still sitting there; no chance!

Oh yeah, I just remembered that I also replaced my original seals/wipers with enduroforkseals and the wipers sit below the top of the fork so you ain’t getting them out like that anyway.

PS, if your top tube is nearer to/below your knees than your thighs then you have got the wrong size road bike; assuming you were on a road bike Joxster (worms, can, opens)

    MTB-Idle

yup, scary indeed. As mentioned above, move one leg inward (don’t think you need to clamp with both knees) so that your thigh is firmish along the top tube, this should resolve it.

Hi Rich, glad to see you are arranging another ride, sure it will be a good one and I’m sure it will be drier than the pre-Christmas Tunnel Hill ride.

Unfortunately (or fortunately for me) I will be in Dumfries on Thursday on the first day of our 7 Stanes epic that the guys from DOMTB are embarking upon.

    See you and Donna soon.

I ride them, they are fine. Predictable grip and ride well in most conditions.

Has one pair last me 3 years.

They arent as wide as a standard 2.3 but they aren’t anywhere near a 1.9.

    Try ’em!

nice one Alan, I used to love the old 3 speed Sturmey Archer gears that I had on my Raleigh ‘racer’ as a lad which was converted with wide ‘tracker’ handlebars a year or so later.

I rode that for about six years, never serviced it once and can’t really remember even oiling the chain but nothing ever broke and it shifted the same at the end as it had on day one

just hide it in your luggage, preferably in a box marked B-U-M-B.

What’s the worst that could happen?

Why do you need to take gas canisters, are you racing?

2nd the spesh armadillo tyre. I rode hundreds of miles on my road bike and never got a puncture on it in over a year.

Started commuting into London and was averaging 3 flats a week until I fitted the armadillo and haven’t had any now in two months (touches wood).

Only needed one on the back too, stuck with the orignal tyre up front

Started commuting on 2nd March this year and passed the 1,000 commuting miles last week 8)

I think the accepted way to do it now is to take her to
Dubai for a week and buy it there. Good prices (apparently). I wouldn’t know but that’s what the young girls in my office do/dream of.

haven’t read all the above so sorry if i am repeating stuff but a few less obvious things:

    – more than one pair of shorts and gloves. The alps riding especially DH is very hard on you and you will find gloves and shorts will rub in certain places after a few days. Wearing a different set of gloves/shorts will relieve the pressure on those areas
    – some tape for your fingers! I found that the amount of braking I did not only wore out the pads but really hurts those soft little southern office worker sat behind a desk all day hands of mine so I taped up my fingers again to relieve pressure i.e. wind the tape a few times around the top knuckle on first three fingers before inserting fingers into gloves
    – gaffa tape, for the use of. multitude of purposes eg fixing stuff, taping rattling/broken bits on, taping your hands, knuckles etc (see above), repairing split tyres
    – cheap two way radios are useful in emergencies or just fun on the longer chair lieft sections

Oh yeah, the BIGGEST advice for anyone new to the alps is take it easy on the first day.

i guess you are there for a week and that is plenty for anyone (come Friday you will be aching all over and glad to be going home) so dont go mad on the first day despite the egging on from your mates.

take it all in your stride, get used to the steepness, the acceleration as soon as you let go of the brakes and the need to ‘feather’ the brakes rather than jamming on all the way down.

that way, you wont break yourself at the start of the week and will enjoy the riding more.

they might look the nuts now but you will ruin them using them off road.

It’s the wrong tool for the job, why are you even considering it?

If you like wearing them so much then wear them at home, put yer feet up on the settee and just sit and stare at them whilst cracking one off.

Alternatively just go out on your road bike.

here’s the official go pro chest strap. Can anyone knock something similar to this up?

The obvious one is to try and strap it to your camelbak chest strap but these can be quite loose. Also not sure how to attach camera to strap securely and in a way that it it is held firmly

s’nice. A well shot and edited video. Put it on full screen and sit close and it feels like I’m riding on the bike myself :P

Good to hear AC/DC too. All mtb vids used to have rock tracks then they moved to rap and then blues type tracks a la Collective but they seem to be heading back to rock again. I like to edit a few videos myself and have used a few rock tracks lately too. 8)
