seems like it’s Christmas do’s everywhere today. Was copied into an email earlier today with a pretty wide distribution list with this as the first line:

Apologies but I cannot setup a call today to discuss your comments as we have to attend a Christmas Party here in Manila for the project. 8)

Those that make a big song and dance about never attending a Christmas night out with their colleagues. In your head I’m sure you think you’re edgy and cool, in reality you’re just disenfranchised loners

Quote of the day; you rock!

We are out tonight for a few (lots) of beers in The Hungerford Arms to warm up for the Lahore Kebab house in Commercial Road (East London).

Here’s an online review of the pub:

After passing this place many times over the last ten years I’ve always declined to go inside. A couple of times I even looked in the window, then decided against it. It is one of the last remaining dodgy pubs left in the area. In other words you may have to deal with something or someone by stepping in.
Last Saturday, after spending four hours at the Rumfest event at the Excel Centre, where we tasted many different types of rum, and even sat in on a tasting master class, we were feeling very tipsy, a lot like pirates, and in need of something other than rum. Getting off the DLR at Shadwell, I suddenly remembered the Hungerford Arms. Since it was only about 6 p.m. I thought it won’t hurt to go in and have a quick lager. We walked through Watney Market, past the scene of many pitched battles between the Kray Twins’ gang and the Watney “massive.”
When we stepped in, it was like one of those moments in a Western movie, where everyone in the saloon stops talking and looks to see what the wind blew in. We strode purposefully and confidently to the bar, ordered our drinks, and planted ourselves firmly on the spot.
That’s all it took. We were more or less ignored from then on, which is what we wanted, and we proceeded to have a few pints and enjoy the atmosphere. The atmosphere consisted of pretty loud music, some young drunk lads playing snooker and banging on the wooden floor with their pool cues, some older men threatening amongst themselves to go and quiet them down (but never doing so, and I don’t blame them, given the fact that all three were holding wooden sticks almost as weapons.)

Basically, you bring attitude into a place like this at your own risk. All the same, you have to defend your ground

    Hmmm…

I had one of these in white in the 70’s. No idea what happened to it but I do remember swapping/buying it from Mark Mitchener, a school mate (no, I’m not expecting you to know him just illustrating that I remember some key details about it but not all)

oh and i do have a breathalyser in the glove compartment even though, like my tax-disc I know I don’t need it (did you see what I did there).

I also keep a hi-viz jacket stuffed into the driver’s side door-pocket. Only had to use it once for a puncture but glad I had it.

I do the ghetto-headlight thing using duct-tape. Much cheaper than the ‘proper’ things plus they actually stick to the lights. The expensive bits of plastic will disappear as soon as you get up some speed on the motorway.

I use a Tom-tom and it works fine. it all switches over automatically and actually helps you get used to driving on the right hand side

I’ve been to Norway loads of times but always work trips and never had the chance to take the bike. Mainly Oslo but also been to Alesund.

I always look longingly/wistfully out the window of whichever plane, train or automobile I happen to be travelling on thinking “that is some damn fine looking MTB’ing country”

I went to a gig in Cheam in the 1980’s of a dodgy band known as the ‘Flared Generation’ who comprised of a couple of my schoolmates (Clive C and Simon W) plus Jeremy Vine and Tim Vine.

I don’t remember either of them.

EDIT: Ooh and on more band-related nonsense that reminds me, my cousin Sarah had a date with Lemmy from Motorhead, again in the 80’s. Apparently he was a sexist pig. (I mean really, what did she expect)

I’ve ridden London (well Greater London) to Brighton off-road a number of times and it’s quite daunting being on Winterfold (Surrey Hills) and looking to the horizon to see the South Downs and the sea and thinking “Jaysus, we’ve got a long way to go”

It’s gonna be either like what Donk says up there, the latest in a long line of health scares that the meeja love or it will be like World War Z (the book which was a bit more realistic than the film).

I would suggest suspending flights from the worst hit places and giving lots of aid but I’m sure that neither will happen and we will stumble on hoping it will go away just like we do with everything else…

I’ve edited more than my fair share of videos in my time.

For free and assuming you are on windows of whatever version you should look no further than MS Windows Moview Maker (MSWMM). Intuitive and easy to use but you will very quickly realise its limitations.

The next step is to find a copy of Adobe Premiere Elements (APE). Shouldn’t be too difficult to get a copy for free, e.g. version 7 is many years old now and will be in many peoples rubbish pile but it still works well. I use version 10 which I bought for the princely sum of twenty of your english pounds. APE is much more advanced and has loads of different options over and above the usual different ways of fading from one scene to another.

However it is a total pig to learn, took me over 12 months. I kept on going back to MSWMM until I finally bit the bullet and learned how to at least make a basic movie on it by viewing various hints and tips on youtube.

I don’t own any apple products so am unable to comment on their offerings other than I have seen stuff edited using Final Cut which is apple specific and it looks very nice. I have no idea if this is free or needs to be bought but that bloke at google can probably tell you.

Hey Ton, yeah I’m still doing this, I was in the top six last time I looked although after the heady early days of excitement I just bulk upload once a week now.

Had some great months over the summer with multiple round trips to Brighton (100 miler from where I live), week in Morzine for MTB and the Pyrenees with the road bike.

I’ve done around 5,000 miles for YTD

This time of year is when it starts to get hard again (ohh err missus) with the rapidly cooling weather, onset of the rain and dark morning and evening for commuting. But I’ve been there before and sure I can keep it up (ohh err again) until the year end.

Thanks for setting this up and keeping it going and well done yerself on getting back on the bike after your op. 8)

I create and edit a lot of videos off my GoPro using Adobe Premier Elements 8.0 on a much lower spec PC than that.

I was getting very frustrated editing them cos Adobe kept on crashing. After a bit of thinking, discussing at work and some browsing on here I upgraded my existing PC to run off an SSD rather than an HDD.

This together with also upgrading my video card from the bog standard ATI to a cheapish (£35) ‘proper’ video card* made everything run much more easily, smoothly and without crashing.

*think it was an nVidia something or other from Maplin

    what the others said.

Caravanne does the whole route chucking stuff out wherever there’s crowds. Tend to speed along the flatter routes and hand out the nicer stuff like KOM tops on the climbs but if you have your kids in plain view they will probably get their attention.

Be prepared to have people physically barge you out of the way to grab a bit of plastic tat ahead of you and yes, been whacked in the face quite a few times by bags of haribo, mobile phone covers/cleaners.

I’ve done this a number of times in France and it’s fine although it does depend if you are going with or against the flow.

Col de le madeleine, I arrived later than planned so had to wait on the lower slopes until after the caravanne, tour riders and then broom wagon had passed (the official rear-end of the tour). Once this had gone the spectators dispersed pretty quicky as I ‘followed’ the riders up the 21k climb to 2,000 metres.

Alternatively, when I was at the top of alpe d’huez and wanted to get back to Bourg d’Oisins at the same time as about 300,000 other people it took a long time (although it was still much quicker than walking or in a car).

As matey boy says up there it will probably be totally different if you are thinking of doing this in the UK

if its the one on Pinkbike then i know the rider selling it. Very well specced and looked after bike and will be a great ride (the bike that is).

Why you buying a bike if you are thinking of selling it on anyway?
