a slight tangent but seeing as this thread seems to have run it’s course hopefully it’s okay.

Can I see on Strava what distance I have ridden each bike this year?

I’ve only got the freebie version and I can see on my profile the various total distances for each of my bikes but is there a simple way to break it down by year?

Muchos gracias

salad cream sandwich

sugar on bread

yep, used to eat both of these in the 70’s. We also used to love bread and dripping #workingclass

Currently I love peanut butter and strawberry jam. Not too strange as it’s like the American PB & ‘jelly’ but i still get strange looks, particularly at work.

we spent a week in Boscastle in April and the weather was superb. Beautiful scenery, little villages to visit all along the coast, pasties from Chough bakery, scones, the ferry at Rock to Rick Steins at Padstowe, the lot.

I even took the road bike and got out a couple of times #thumbsup

Garmin 500 here

I do the same as Stumpy. I find that the more files I have in my activities folder the more issues i have with the Garmin i.e. slow to boot up, slow to find GPS, drops signal more frequently etc.

Create a file on your pc/separate drive somewhere and cut and paste them in there. They aren’t doing anything useful in the activities folder on your Garmin.

Do this and it boots up again quicker etc.

yup, I’m a fan of Lord Harry Flashman too.

I always remember the one where he’s living with the Native Americans and impresses them with his horsemanship. They name him ‘he who rides faster than the wind’ and he is very impressed with this title until they shorten it to ‘windbreaker’.

Childish I know but I can’t help laughing at it.

I’ve stayed with Treeline Chalets twice now. Very nice places, well equipped for families ten minutes walk from the town centre.

Stayed at Chalet Fornet this year. Sleeps 3 to 5 easily. The games room is good for kids

and Chalet Alpin last year. Sleeps 8-9 easily

good vids boardinbob and Markend. Think ~I rode every trail you did too. Was that a section of ~Swiss National Bob? When we rode there we were the only four riders on the whole mountain.

Someone might have once said something like America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without an intervening period of civilization or perhaps they didn’t.

I saw Mark Steel in Brighton three weeks ago. I was sitting outside The Regency Restaurant awaiting my bacon and fried egg sandwich before heading back to that London on my road bike when he strolled past.

I spotted him, smiled and said ‘Hi Mark’. He smiled back and said hello.

I am not, nor have ever been, a member of any political party.

Hope that helps.

I upgraded from a relatively clean 8.1. last week. Registered for upgrade mid-July, waited for it to say it was there, circa 4th August and then followed instructions. Took about an hour.

works okay now. i prefer the look and feel although closing down takes slightly longer than before it’s not an issue.

uploaded via Garmin express to Garmin connect (which in turn uploads to strava and endomondo) and all still works as before.

Adobe Premiere elements v 8 is giving me gyp at the moment but it was before I upgraded (I was hoping the upgrade would resolve but it didn’t).

I use this PC to remote connect into the office. The connection was always clunky on v 8.1 and always insisting I upload latest version of Java even though I had it already and only ever worked on IE even though I use chrome for everything else.

upgrade to W10 seems to have made this worse and I can’t connect via IE anymore as it is insisting i don’t have latest version of java installed. Will call work helpdesk and get them to walk/talk me through it.

Other than that need to play around and see if I spot any other differences.

Good thread #thumbsup

oh shoot, this has just popped into my head. On a par with my previous submission and of the same genre is The Hooligan Factory

a very, very bad film.

Big Fat Gypsy Gangster

now I like a bad film and have quite enjoyed many of those already listed on here but this is absolute and utter tosh.

The review linked above is more funny than the actual film.

(and can I just add that I’m glad we are referring to them all as films and not ‘movies’).

isn’t it all just the results of 24 hour news channels?

They need something to act as filler whilst they are waiting for real news (whatever that may be, it’s a flexible term)

I’m leaving Friday evening.

I have no idea of your riding capabilities but my advice is always just take it easy on the first day.

There’s plenty of riding to be done in a week, don’t push yourself/your limits and spanner yourself until you get the bike, big mountains and trails dialled in properly

Enjoy it and maybe see you out on the mountains (YT Capra AL 1 – yeah I know, me and every other bloke out there)

watched it last night. Was ok, nothing special.

I much preferred Seven Physcopaths which I only just watched last week despite it being a 2012 release. I’m not particularly a fan of Colin Farrell or Woody Harrelson but it was much more enjoyable, funny and clever too.

I’ve ridden 12k a year for the last four years, the majority of those commuting on the road and have tried lots of different tyres.

In my experience there’s a hierachy of fast to slow as follows – you just need to decide where you want to be on that hierarchy:

– Fast with reasonable puncture protection – Conti GP4000S
– Handling in winter (better with punctures) – Conti GP4S or Schwalbe Duranos
– Better protection but slower and no grip in the wet – Conti Gatorskins
– Even better puncture protection but wooden feel – Armadillos
– Bombproof but heavy and slow – Marathon+

I have yet to try the Schwalbe One’s. And don’t get Ultremos because they won’t last!

Don’t worry, you’re welcome.

I drove solo to the Pyrenees last year (well, MTB-idle junior was in the passenger seat but too young to drive in Europe).

Did it in one stint, just stopping for petrol, it’s tough. There was one section of about 80km where i only saw two other cars.

top tip? steer clear of the energy drinks. Don’t have a large lunch. When your stomach is full all your blood supply goes to digesting the food and makes you sleepy. Eat little and more often instead.

Stop somewhere and get in the back and just close your eyes for 30 minutes. you will be sick of sitting in the same seat. Even if you don’t sleep the rest will do you good.

I’ve been to the Alps in 2011, 2012 and 2013 with my two adult sons to follow Le Tour and had great fun and ridden many alpine climbs.

Last year we went to the Pyrenees to do the same. We stayed in Lourdes and travelled around. We rode the Porte de Bales, Pla d’Adet & Tourmalet.

Just reviewing my ride reports from last year mainly written whilst on the mountain waiting for Le tour to arrive. Temperatures were 27 to 35 degrees in the valley although obvs got cooler with altitude:

Porte de Bales (19km).
It starts off gently at 4 per cent plus some flat sections but then really kicks in. Up to 12 per cent for long sections at a time. After 16km through shaded trees you get above the treeline and its bare for the next 3km. Doesn’t sound far but its a bitch of a climb that seems never ending

Pla d’Adet (10km)
This is a bit like Alpe d’Huez, you are bimbling along on the flat then you go around a roundabout and you hit the first ramp up the col which is immediately 9%. No messing just a brutal climb that you can see up above you traversing the mountain. It’s only 10k compared to yesterdays 19k but makes up for it by being very hard for the first 8k with sections touching 12 per cent.

Tourmalet (17km)
Here we go then. From page 104 of June 26, 2014 cycling weekly re the Tourmalet:…It is one of the hardest climbs in cycling. …the gradient is relentless, not dropping below 8% for ten whole kilometres to the top.

Yup, its all true but Sam and I rode it today. Descent was fun too, wheeeeeeeeee!!!!

Talking of fun descents here’s a vid I shot and edited of the descent of Pla d’adet when we were getting passed by the pro’s (mountain-top finish, no other way down)

Or in short, just do it! you will have a great time!

What also annoys me is making a meeting time a noun as in ‘I’ve got a nine o’clock’.

‘hydro-digital’ for a high level estimate i.e. put a wet finger in the air.

heard most of them before including ‘wash it’s own face’ in the 1980’s. Usually used to describe an application for a loan for a purpose that generated enough cash to make the repayments.

The current one that everyone in my org is using is ‘disrupt’ as in we need to disrupt the industry but of course gets used everywhere for lots of other reasons.

Other good ones I’ve not seen mentioned already are ‘we need to shoot the puppy’ i.e. make an unpopular decision or ‘hydro-digital’ for a high level estimate i.e. put a wet finger in the air.

EDIT: ‘Gain traction’ is also a few years old but not seen it above

hi,

i stayed in Dijon two years ago on the way back from the alps. But we stayed in an out of town centre hotel and just left the bikes in the room.

Why not just email/call the hotels and ask them if they have secure storage? Most French hotels are pretty good with this sort of thing as they are much more used to cyclists than any where in the UK.

Dijon itself is beautiful like most French towns. Enjoy

yes. i had the original Raleigh Chopper in the early 70’s, the proper one with the gear stick in the ‘crutch interface’ position although i didn’t off road with that.

I then remember going to Gamleys toy shop in Sutton in 1976 with my mum who bought me a Raleigh ‘racer’ as we called them then as a reward for passing my 11+. cost was about £49 IIRC.

I rode this on road for a couple of years but then the ‘tracker’ craze came in and I bought some tracker bars and knobbly tyres and road off road. Mainly on ‘Track 40’ which is on Belmont/Banstead Downs but we also used to go as far afield as Box Hill to ride off road.

I remember using my mums spoons to change tyres and one tyre having 17 (yes seventeen) patches on it.

3 speed Sturmey Archer gears and I don’t think they went wrong the whole time I had it.

Only lost interest when I reached 16 and got a moped, then a motorbike, then a car, then a wife etc. (although not all at 16).

I drive regularly to the Alps but drove to the Pyrenees last year from just south of London. Those costs sound about right.

Share the driving as it can get boring. Once you get on the south western toll-roads I found them really empty. I drove over 60km with only one other car that I saw on the road.

Sounds great but without the ‘excitement’ of other cars around it’s really easy to lose concentration especially when the only other person in the car (my 24 year old son) was snoring away on the seat next to me.

Other ways of doing it cheaply? Don’t really know. you can drive on the non-toll roads but that will take forever and you will probably burn in fuel what you save on tolls and you will need to stay somewhere half way (extra cost) as it will double the journey time.

Hire a car and fly? probably work out similar price.
