On the assumption that you are PC rather than Mac…

I’ve used many editors over the years starting off with Windows Movie Maker.

It was the most easy to use/pick up but you very quickly run out of functionality. Vids shouldn’t all be about the fade between pics or spinning windows etc but it just seemed to lack some of the basics.

Plus once WMM moved from a downloadable file to an online process the whole system went to hell. Hated it.

After searching around for a few others I moved on to Adobe Premier elements v 7 ISTR. This was very hard to pick up but once I understood it I got some very pleasing results. However it has it’s little foibles which annoyed me such as when rotating footage the reproduction was poor, plus an unexpected download/update seemed to deliberately screw up any music I overlaid.

So again after a few tries of other software I moved onto GoPro studio. Again relatively easy to pick up how to use, it has plenty of functionality although you are always looking for that one ‘extra’ effect that would make the movie spectacular.

However, it is very, very buggy. It doesn’t like it once the ‘project’ file i.e. the file that contains all your edits, transitions, footage, effects etc gets above 3,000kb. Very easy to do on even a short 3 minute movie.

it’s a commonly encountered issue if you Google it. I overcome it by saving numerous efforts i.e. import footage and convert, save as movie_file_v_1, do some quick editing, save as movie_file_v_2, add some titles, save as movie_file_v_3 etc. then when it inevitably does crash you can revert to a previously saved version rather than starting from scratch.

it can still be incredibly frustrating though.

I stick with it cos i like the results and especially the various colour washes that can really enhance most footage e.g. the protune or candy colour option.

examples are available if you want to see edited footage.

Reminds me of the American banker in Mexico apocryphal story…

An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, “only a little while. The American then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish? The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs. The American then asked, “but what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siestas with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine, and play guitar with my amigos. I have a full and busy life.”

The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat. With the proceeds from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing, and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually New York City, where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, how long will this all take?”

To which the American replied, “15 – 20 years.”

“But what then?” Asked the Mexican.

The American laughed and said, “That’s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions!”

    “Millions – then what?”

The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siestas with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

I was a big Numan fan too and Down in the Park was my favourite track, really creepy.

As any Numan fan will know he pretty much ripped off John Foxx’s sound. Poor old John Foxx had the misfortune to not only have his only hit after Numan got to number one with ‘Are Friends Electric’ and everyone assume he had copied Numan but also for ‘Underpass’ to be called ‘Underpants’ by us schoolkids

My sister used to have the Travelogue album by the Human League when I lived at home in the late 70’s/early 80’s and I always loved ‘Being Boiled’. Just listened to it again, turns out I still do!

    The last one, possibly…

I’ve done it a number of times and I’m not too far behind you age wise.

IMHO it’s easier L2B rather than B2L as it really is gently downhill for most of the ride especially the Downs Link section.

Here’s my most recent route Epsom to Brighton offroad.

I ‘cheat’ slightly as I live in Epsom so I just ride from there, I don’t bother riding into London to ride out again particularly as I do that on my cycle commute most days anyway.

got any old letters he sent home? They would all have his serial number on them particularly the type of pre-printed postcards they used to use

This kind of thing, serial number likely to be on the reverse with the address details

    Poor mans Woody Guthrie

Oh dear, that kinda shows how much you don’t know about him.

    Bringing It All Back Home
    Highway 61 Revisited
    Blonde on Blonde

For me those three albums between 1965 & 1966 are the height of creativity and I flip between which of them is my favourite depending on how I’m feeling.

Harking back to the best opening lines thread here a while ago:

Oh God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”

Abe says, “Man, you must be puttin’ me on”

God say, “No.” Abe say, “What?”

God say, “You can do what you want Abe, but

The next time you see me comin’ you better run”

Well Abe says, “Where do you want this killin’ done?”

God says, “Out on Highway 61”

hi mate, first of all congratulations, us regular cycle commuters are a special hardy breed especially those who ride through the whole year; welcome to the club!

I too class myself as primarily an MTB’er but i also found out that i was exhausting myself on the ‘training’/cycle commute and feeling rubbish on the weekend fun rides.

That’s a big clue that you are doing too much too soon. Slow down a bit or don’t smash yourself on every commute, it’s not a race.

This is a massive change to your previous habits and your body needs to get used to it.

Also make sure you are hydrating properly. Even though you may feel cold at this time of the year you are still sweating plenty and need to replace that lost water and salts too. Some Nuun tablets or similar on a regular basis should help to replace those vital salts.

And finally, if you are feeling tired don’t be taken in by the MTFU rubbish, that’s just what it is, guff spouted on the internet. Take a day off, recover and then go out the next time feeling much better.

I’m 53 and cover about 10,000km a year and most of that is via cycle commuting. It’s all about taking your time and building up to it.

Coz I get taxed on the measly interest i get from my piss poor savings account !

    No you don’t[/url]

Every basic rate taxpayer in the UK now has a Personal Savings Allowance of £1,000. This means that the first £1,000 of savings interest earned in a year is tax-free.

Or are you telling us that you have circa £330k at say 0.3% in your measly savings account and are earning more than £1,000 p.a. interest?

The obvious solution appears to be to ditch that white monstrosity and go out across the back of the house on both ground and first floor.

no point in doing ground only as I assume you will need more bedrooms. Also more efficient to do two floors at the same time although you obviously need to cough up a big load of cash in one go rather than doing the round floor now and first floor in say ten years time.

Stop thinking about it as an investment and more as a house where you want to enjoy living with your family.

I was at the bridge yesterday arvo, Matthew Harding Lower. what a great game.

Thought the chels played really well compared to how we have been playing ever since Kante got injured. No surprise we looked so much better with him back.

We were unlucky not to score more but also glad that ManU didn’t equalise at the end.

Disappointed at the fans around me who were coating off Matic.

It will soon be Christmas. When the Deputy Head is piling all those bottles of wine, whiskey & boxes of chocolates that the kids/parents have given him into his car take the opportunity to remind him that he should be declaring that…

I’m not sure i agree with your premise that there aren’t serious alternatives.

Pre-smart phone then Garmin was the only option and they knew it. That’s why every model was £300+ and very few people had them.

Then along came smartphones and Strava and Garmin realised they were being left behind, no-one even needed a Garmin anymore nevermind paying through the nose for a clunky model. It’s called competition.

So they upped their game and prices came down. Of course you can still get the top of the range stuff at similar price points to old but now you get much more of a range of models from cheap to expensive.

Steel Panther I see have already been done but isn’t there a vid with Sarah Silverman in where she deliberately misunderstands ‘death to all but metal ‘as ‘death to all butt-metal’?

Also Rubberbandits mentioned earlier but my fave is Dad’s best Friend
