Will do it this weekend with a cuppa. Watching and feeding the garden birds helped me in lockdown. Amazing how calming it is just watching them flit around.

Not had our usual winter visitors in the garden this year of yellow hammers, brambling and redwing.

Eufy stuff is really good. Battery life on the cameras are good, setup is super easy with the homehub. App is easy to use and navigate etc.

They have a new solar powered cam, but also offer a solar charger for the battery operated cameras.

Alarms on them though aren’t particularly loud. Tempted with the motion sensors to pop in the garage. They seem reasonably priced.

I used Bear Back biking when I went and hit the trails in Whistler. Great fun. I didn’t really want to ride the bike park.
I also had an amazing days riding on Vancouver Island in Cumberland. I enjoyed Cumberland more than Whistler as all the trails naturally join up. Whereas Whistler there was a bit of road as you cross between mountains.

Also, the free walking tours on Granville Island were good.

Yep, always cure my own now. I get either loin or middle from my butcher. Cure it then take it back and he slices it for me.
Have also cold smoked the bacon too.

It is super easy and you can experiment with flavours in your cures. Having a vacuum packer helps. It’s curing for a good few days, then drying out on a rack in the fridge for a couple more. Recently did a marmalade cured bacon. Delish.

No need to use Prague powder or a cure. Just use salt, sugar and whatever flavouring you have.

I left just over four years ago. Felt a little lost after leaving as it is a profession that just consumes you, and I saw myself as a teacher, that was my identity. It hasn’t been easy since then in terms of finding a new career etc. However, I am happier, healthier albeit poorer. As said above, teachers are paid very well compared to many other roles and professions.

I luckily found a great job with a local heritage charity, leading on their learning programme at the museum and castle. Take a look at charity job, and searching learning roles. There will be wildlife charities etc. all who do outreach programmes and visits.

If she wants to move completely out of teaching, then it may be a bit more difficult. I’d start by going through the roles and responsibilities that she performed, but then think about the key skills used to perform those jobs and reword them without using ‘teacher’ speak. I found it tough to reword my letters trying not to sound too ‘teachery’, and ensuring those who were reading it, could understand what I actually did.

I have done a little retraining, not massively successful though. I completed my Prince2, but hated it (totally put me off project management). However, it helped me get my current role. Perhaps a job to get some money, but use it to take some time to carefully think about where to go and do some retraining?

Hope she is all OK OP. It can be daunting leaving, but once you leave you’ll be surprised how many other ex teachers you meet who have not regretted leaving one bit.
Feel free to PM if you want :)

I love mine. Only the smaller version, but great when at the beach or fishing for q cup of tea or two.

I did get all the cooking attachments but not used those yet.

Thanks guys. That is interesting to know airvent. The gable end already suffers from a bit of damp etc due to the exposed nature and orientation. It gets the worst weather, so I’d hate to make it even worse in terms of cold and damp.

I do not think we will be moving for a number of years, so in the long run it’d be worth it. Fitted solar panels last year, which has already had a huge impact on our oil bills.

Local adult education provider may have a short course to help. We run one based around coaching and getting people to think about skills and values they hold along with experience etc.
Those online jobbies are pretty bad mostly.
If not, there are plenty of career coaches to help? It really works discussing thoughts with someone.

Just watched all 3 with the OH.
Glad to hear everyone else thought the future Vespas were bad. Very out of place with the whole star wars feel. far too colourful compared to everything else.
I do quite like the flashbacks though.
Much preferred the Mandalorian to this series.

Plenty of decent veg pies you could do op. We do a squash, lentil and feta which is ace. We’ve been using Gill Meller’s root stem leaf flower cook book. Lots of good seasonal vegetarian recipes.

So many good recipes out there that avoid the faux processed meat replacements.

Thank you. She is an odd shape! Fairy short but very stocky at the moment.
It looks like gooutdoors has a few, so will head down and try some on when she is able to fit a bit better in them.

We already have an ergo for the front but just need something we can use on longer walks.

    South Devon chilli for me.

The hotter ones do take longer to germinate and mature.

Check out Facebook for a few groups with useful advice.

I am just about to get my chillies on the go in the next week. I use a heated propagator to get them started.

Sending big virtual hugs. I still miss my best mate, a boxer rotty called Wallis. We lost him a year ago to a tumour. Worst experience ever. However we know we 100% did the right thing in having him put to sleep when we did. It’s tough as they are a part of your family.
Head out for a walk at your dog’s favourite place, get that fresh air.

Oooh, I am going to listen to that while prepping lunch.

Got a great Karahi for cooking curries on the BBQ, plus some nice chocs and Josh Widdecombe’s book. Oh and some vomit in the arm pit and urine down the front of me…from my 4 month old.

Hope everyone has a great day :)

We have a boxing Day hunt in our village. A big spectacle and every one knows it’s an absolute sham. We are just outside the village and can see and hear the dogs moving across land where it would be impossible to lay a scent trail. They come up through our garden and all our neighbours have to lock in our cats and dogs on boxing Day due to this. We’ve complained to the hunt and been told they have no control of the dogs and what scent they pickup. So move if you don’t like what goes on in the countryside.
For those that take part they see it as a cultural act and have the view of, well we’ve always done it. They despise newcomers or townies moving in and telling them what they are doing is wrong.
I can understand the need to control foxes in some areas but turning it in to a game and circus for fun is disgusting.

We have a brilliant friendly postie. She got us a gift when we had a newborn and when our dog passed away. So we always get her something. Also make mince pies and non alcoholic mulled wine for delivery drivers. They really appreciate it. I always think if I can make them happy and show appreciation with a minimum amount of effort, then I should do something for them.
Our Hermes and DPD drivers are great too.

I got the wife a Fuji instax 90 I think. we use it a fair bit and can get some decent results, you just need to ensure lighting is ok and the correct setting. You think about what you take far more. Mostly family pics of us.

I also made a photo frame with a black perspex middle. Use the bluetac dots to fox pics on the board. It’s a great way of displaying them. Once board is full, pop in an album.

Are we allowed to say ready rolled pastry and then the Waitrose mince pie filling? I’m always annoyed at the lack of filling in most.
I’ll be doing the same this year and leaving out for postie and delivery drivers.

Heston ones were awful! Who wants caraway pastry?! Need to try the Aldi ones.

Hive is great. You get to choose which local book shop to support with their profits.
Often just a few quid more than Amazon, but free delivery and often a voucher for 5-10% off. Best feeling though is that you’re not supporting Bezos.

Up anyway as doing the night feed and nappy change. But looked out to see our whole garden fence down plus a rather large ash tree down on our track. Balls. I’ve been putting off filling the Jerry can so will have to beg some fuel off our neighbours for the chainsaw.
Now I’m awake, I may as well grab a cuppa and play Xbox.

Hey, I know of a local charity called Brocheck set up here in East Devon. Similar thing to what you’ve said and similar circumstances. She set it up after her brother took his own life.
If you want I can give her an email and put you in touch?

Watched the first couple last night. His stuff is great, he is very down to earth and presents a balanced view.
His one on Cornwall was similar really, presenting a balanced view on the benefits tourism can bring but how it can really impact locals in a negative way.

I think I’ve got some coprolite somewhere from when a museum colleague was clearing out his desk and collection before retiring. I’ll dig that out and send on over. Who won’t love a bit of Dino poop?!

In my previous school I ran a number of mock elections with the students. They researched and ran campaigns inline with the elections. Many students were engaged with the process, listened to the arguments, asked pertinent questions when we had representatives from the political parties come in to the school. They seemed to have a greater sense of social injustice than most of the adults. This was a school in a very deprived area, non selective. Parents generally not engaged politically let alone with their children’s education.
I think as a few have said, we underestimate them. I’d think about reducing the voting age to 16. As a demographic they are probably far more engaged in the world than we think especially with issues such a climate change.
Edit- Cougar it is meant to be taught but has been marginalised and squeezed much like other subjects.

    Quantock Breakfast stout
    Wiper and True milk stout
Siren- Carribbean chocolate stout (they do a few) also their broken dream.

Cairngorm brewery had some really great autumn/winter beers on last time I was up in Aviemore. Well worth a look.

Have a look at Honest Brew, they have a decent selection and as far as I am aware they aren’t part owner by inbev. Someone may correct me though.

I am brewing a cherry chocolate porter, but shouldn’t be too sweet will have a nice balance of maltiness and bitterness. Some of the ‘pudding’ style stouts are just plain wrong Far far too sweet and sickly.

There’s a great cauliflower pasta recipe in thug kitchen. It goes along the lines of…boil florets. Blitz then with some garlic, herbs and some of the water until smooth. Serve as a creamy pasta sauce. It’s actually really very good.

+1 for chipotle chillies. Ancho too. With a good chilli you need that smokiness and you get that with the chipotle.
There are some crimes against chilli being spouted here….tinned veg soup?!
    Dried oregano too.
Venison season now, so slow cooked venison chilli is a real winner, add some bacon lardons for the fat though.
You want that chilli looking dark like a mole sauce.

That is great to know robola. I was looking at the heat pump ones due to the lower running costs. I may have to rethink.
