extract of an email I've just received:

I've just thrashed it round the garden. It feels great. very nippy and contrary to what I was worried it was going to be like, it still seems very easy to honk the front wheel up (narrow, lower, further forward bars = less leverage?) and as a result pulled the most impressive wheelie yet.

I think I can see my mtb mojo on the horizon!!!!

I couuldn't stop thrashing t round the garden. Neighbours prob think : 'le stupid anglais il est fou. Il roule dans le jardin a midi comme un petit garcon'

i’ll be interested to know what all of you are doing.

another thing I’ve always wondered about is what do people who do things like IT consultant or help to redress a bank actually really do.
To me all these jobs are ways of making money while blowing hot air and being good with excel. quite attractive really but very obscur to me. enlighten me.

anytime mate! we’re going to have to block a weekend. Probably september as we seem to have a fully booked summer. For people with no mates, with seem to be rather busy.
September see more chances of my downhill buddies being back from the Alps.

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘my sis needs comforting’

but yes if you wanted to visit, it’s no problem! My husband is english so maybe that would satisfy your need for Englishness!

I can see what you mean about the type of people on the Cote d’azur

We’re in Crémieu, between Lyon and Chambéry. It’s such a wonderful area. fantastic mountain biking on our doorstep. same for road biking as we’re in the Buget. We have a much better stardard of living here than we could dream of in the Uk even if my salary is not what it used to be. but who cares when you’ve got acres of land with your farmhouse and trails worthy of a trail centre literally on my doorstep.

I was missing the UK and remembering all the good stuff, until I went back for a weekend, the first time since we moved back here 8months ago.

and now, not a day goes by when I’m now thankful that I don’t live there anymore. even if my job was much better there, and I miss my friends and being able to go to Scotland for the weekend and the beautiful Peak District where I used to live.

Juan, sounds like you’re very negative about your return to France. Where about are you?

To OP, what about around Grenoble? you’ve got the Ecrin, the Vercors, the Chartreuse, etc….

    Jane powertrack 360 from ebay

very light, a real all terrain buggy. can only compare to the queeny and this is much lighter to lift in the car and goes over anything.
the only thing is, it will take your entire boot and it’s not for going into shops, it’s way too wide.

we live in the country and it’s fantastic. manoeuvres very lightly and it’s got disc brakes FFS!!!!

Thanks for all the tips. I’m actually scared of the whole thing. looks like i’ve developed a third nipple in the wrong place. my ever encouraging husband has suggested that maybe I’m growing udders.. (shudder).
I’m p*ssed off with myself for going riding on satuday wearing jeans when it was really hot and being me i couldn’t just ‘cycle’, I had to peg it, timetrial style and got very sweaty. silly girl.
after sundays’ 60k on the road, it turned black and now it’s white. LURVELY!! ok, maybe i’ll stop with the details.
I’ll see how it goes and be responsible and see a GP.

I think I have to own up and admit that I went riding on saturday… It was just a short ride (as in really short, like 10k on the road, to and from the village). But because I put my son in his bike seat for the first time and basically went for a pootle, I didn’t treat it as a ‘ride’ and was… (say this in a really small voice) was wearing jeans… sorry sorry don’t hit me . I think the lycra gods are punishing me for treason.

err yeah except I’m not just starting. I’ve been riding a lot, to say the least, for years and never had anything like this. even after some 12hours in the saddle on several occasion.

When the uphill is hard I grunt like I was enjoying myself v. much sometimes….

Going downhill it’s more like YEEHA in really good swooping or rocky sections. (or sometimes a very french WOOHOOO 🙂

did a race in France at the weekend and was getting strange looks. more so since i seemed to be the only girl who could ride a bike and was making most of the blokes eat my dust… YEEHAAAA!!

I have a Specialized bg ladies saddle. the high end one (about £70 I think). It comes in 3 widths so you have to go to a spech dealer to get your ass measured. It’s not much padded but once used to it you can stay on it for hours.
I find that padded saddles are comfortable at the beginning but for long rides it gets very sore as the padding squashes all the squishy bits! It’s much better if you’re actually sitting on your seat bones

I have that on a Thompson Elite on my MTB and on a carbon post on my road bike.

I find that I never fidgit (spl?) all the time as I used to on other saddles.

Thanks Juan, I just called the guy from velo 26 and he said he could probably help. Especially since he’s based in Cham and I’m in north Isere.
