2 things really helped me – 1) turbo trainer improved my fitness no end – and not just my fitness, it also gave my legs some power so that I could stay in the same gear up shorter climbs. 2) going to spain last year and doing loooong descents helped my skills no end. I hated them at the time, found them really scary (as dgoab says above) but when I came home, the hills here seemed a lot less frightening than they had been before I went.

quite a few good suggestions there. just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy, enjoyed (if you can put it like that) it a lot. Also Half a Yellow Sun – can’t remember who it’s by but it’s about the Biafran War in Nigeria in the 60s, very interesting as I knew nothing about that period.

Currently reading The 19th Wife about polygamous marriage in Mormons and sects of the Mormon church. Enjoying that too. Next one lined up after that is The Kite Runner.

yes, baby oil works a treat on the hob. can’t comment on its affect on the 21 year old cleaners though!

lol, I am the same, I have stainless steel oven, hob etc and I didn’t mind at all that the cleaner left them alone :)

We hired ours privately (sadly we don’t have one any more though, hence house now unclean), although we looked at some agencies as well. Average for Yorks seems to be about £8 an hour and most wanted 2 – 3 hours to clean our small 3 bed semi.

Things to consider – do they bring their own cleaning equipment or use yours; if agency, is it the same cleaner each week (often they are not); what will they clean in the kitchen – a lot will not do the oven, hob etc.

Having a cleaner is lovely. sigh.
