I ran my ST highroller only on the front and found a world of difference compared to a maxxpro HR or minion DHF. I back to back changed it out with a maxxpro 3 times and the ST only on the front created a ton of drag over a ride IME. I do not find much difference in cornering grip between a ST and Maxxpro if you have a HR or Minion leaned over, only when steering with the bars instead of the hips.

I found a ST Highroller to be too draggy to live with.

I ride both. Flats for training a neutral body language into my riding and gaining corner speed confidence then SPDs for all out speed. Both are ace for different reasons ime.

Beb – my settings are + or – from the std 15 turns clockwise on all dials. Should have made that clear. I do not have TRC. I still have to spend more time doing proper bracketing on the settings but straight off these are a nice starting point for me.

Too ill to ride or this would have been my mission this weekend.

Also worth noting that BOS have mixed themselves up between the manual and the stickers on the fork. All 3 damping types increase when wound clockwise.

I’m about 80kg with gear on. Currently running about 80psi. Current settings are +1 rebound, +1 to 2 slow speed compression and -1 to 2 high speed. Gives about 30% sag but would need to check to confirm.

Your experience does not sound right.

Equalise method I was given was:
    Let all air out
Pump up to 3.5bar, stroke shock slowly about 15mm 5 times,
Pump up further to 5 bar and stroke again,
Pump up to 7 bar and stroke again,
Pump up to 9 bar and stroke again,

Lower to riding pressure and stroke again. This is where you have to be careful as every time you change the pressure a little to find the sag/pressure you want you should stoke the shock 15mm a few times.

I was under the impression the equalisation was required for damping to work properly, not sure if this should really effect your static sag settings. I would let all the air out and start over, good luck 🙂

    Great words Woody.

Danny obviously hates his parents as he is looking to stay with them at the European races for support etc. I guess that must the the Stockholm Syndrome kicking in…

Ace to see that both his parents and his sister support him so strongly. Shows what a good unit can achieve

I believe he is ready to win a world cup this year given his Fort Bill and Val de Sole runs on top of the champs win. Given the tight competition it is hard for anyone to win a round.

One issue with transition times is that there is a large difference between the fitness of all participants. If you make it tight and people arrive late you cannot flag them through late with the clock already ticking as they will get in the way of faster riders which is not fair. This is where putting faster riders after slow ones falls down in this format. It does work in the one run format of DH to build up excitement to the end.

Not sure what they do in Europe but if you don’t make the transition you should be out. To keep this format working for lazy Brits you need long transition times to get high amounts of riders. This will hurt when it is pissing it down and the midgies are in the trees with you. Been there, done that.

It is a format that still needs a bit of working out and acceptance from the riders. This along with massive course cuts and different transition routes all needs sorting

I was worried a super tacky on the front might be too much work for lots of traversing etc? Dual ply or single?

Ash, favourite STW question – what tyres are best for one of your single track decending type holidays? I read you use minions on the website but what size/compound/ply front and rear?

The 2011 Specialized enduros are super comfy and thin. The 2012s have a bit more meat to them and still super comfy. I try on tons of gloves in the shop and have always ended up with the spec enduros as they fit my hands so well. Binned my first set of spec gloves a week ago which were 2004s and came free with my bike.

These threads have me worried. I have bought clear lenses online from a bike shop. How do I know they are genuine?

TFTuned did me a Push tune on a coil shock after I gave them a detailed background of how I felt the bike rode in different situations and how I wanted it to ride differently. It seems to be absolutely mint but I need more time to ride it in different places to see if it ticks all the boxes and decided where the compromises are.

They talked me through the method they used to dyno it for a baseline, then mod it and then re dyno a few times while making tweeks to get the damping profile to corrospond with my wishlist. They were very helpful and admit to where they put in the guess work and experience as the dyno is not the be all and end all but a very good tool to account for different linkages etc.

A big tommy two thumbs from me  but £139 against £36 pounds makes it a tricky choice for you. I would try spacers first as a very cheap reversable option. 🙂

Same experiences ideas above and don’t know what is best in the long term. I have run chain, cassette and rings for 4 years until the rollers on the chain finally fell off then replaced the lot. One thing that was noticeable was the efficiency of the new parts over the worn stuff. If I had replaced my chain regularly and reduced cassette and rings wear then the efficiency my have been better for longer? Depends what your priority is.

I do still have the lockout, TFTuned told me not to do the mod for some reason or other to do with something not being sealed and thought the seal removal and bushing re-sizing would sort my requirements. They did come back very plush/stiction free. Never use the lock out so could do it before they go back on the bike. They are sitting freshly serviced ready for stand in duties – probably put them on to get scraped up in the uplift truck.

Could possibly mod the high speed shim stack, use lighter oil as well but I think we are talking about std products for the OP. Std lyriks are good and the Uturn part is very good.

I’m not sold on the Devilles long term so would not recommend them, only saying that they can be set up less “harsh” than my coil Lyriks. The Lyriks were serviced tons and are still going strong after 4 years. This includes having the TFTuned seal removal mod and bushings opened up to make them as plush as possible. In the car park test the Lyriks are very plush but on the trail they bottle neck in the fast damping a lot compared to the range of damping on the devilles. This is not the spring as I have run a spring too soft for my normal riding and the damping still spiked. I know of other lyrik owners that had the same experience. The DH damper probably fixes this but a lot of people say the DH damped lyriks push through their travel a little easy.

I only got the devilles as I have the lyriks as back up. I would still recommend lyriks to people as mine are good and the travel adjust on the coil u turn is very good if you like to use it for different types of riding. I got annoyed being over sensitive(read as crap riding skill and over fettling) and stuck between spring weights for the best set and forget feel so thought I would try an air fork.

Rode the riverside trail today and it was pretty good

Someone has taken a horse down the remains of Flux and done a good job of messing up cliff run and some other steep trails. Bit selfish but mixed feelings as the land is open for everyone to use. Very deep hoof holes show how soft the ground still is.

Been riding my new BOS forks all weekend and they sacrifice no plushness what so ever ime. Open up the high speed damping and they are way way less harsh than my coil lyriks which I ran fully open a lot of the time depending on use.

Hard to buy a “bad” fork and zooki look best value and service intervals from the reports.

How draggy is it? I find a highroller more draggy than a minion dhf on the back. Where does a HR2 sit at your usual pressures?

I splashed out on a set of BOS Devilles this year. I can tell you after one ride that they definitely, absolutely, completely and utterly feel like a suspension fork.

I’ll tell you what they are actually like after a good solid 6 months riding on them. 😆

moolove – the tree ramping is a great addition. I was going to hop the tree on the way down as there was a little bump before it to propel off. As I reached it and saw the new ramp I :mrgreen:ed.

If you are the man with the lovely labrador then you are a man of many talents.

I shall have to be honest, I have been very respectful of the river run but rocky rooty gets a hit everytime as it is fun in all conditions!

Couldnt commit due to a heavy workload and ended up working all Saturday. Was up today and amazed at how much you achieved!

Hopefully the spring annual dry out shall actually happen this year. If so it will be minty up there.

What is the river run like now that you have worked it? I almost ventured on for the first time in a year but gave it a miss in the end and boosted down the WHW.

Noticed someone has made a good job of ramping over the fallen tree on cliff run (or what ever it is called). 🙂

All sounds about right. You can’t tell someone to wear a helmet because you might crash into them with your actions and don’t want the fall out. But, if helmets save the tax payer cash through less minor injuries in A&E etc then I am all for making people wear them… 😆

My car has not been washed or properly serviced in the 4.5 years I have owned it. It has had only one oil change to celebrate it passing it’s MOT 2 years ago…nothing else service wise.

    The bike gets licked clean.

Take your pads out, give them a good wipe and then give the pad surface a light sand until the dry material comes through. This takes very little sanding with a bit of sand paper. Put them back in and see how you get on.

I went from 721s on pro 2s to flows on pro 2s with no issues. Friends have had issues with big pinch flat hits which have damaged the flows. My 721 were 36 spoke and felt much stiffer than my 32 spoke hope hoop flows. Did save weight and still feel good enough for trail riding. Uplift days the 721s go back on.

Loco – I have a pushed VanR on with a custom tune to give it more pedal/pump support on my 06 Enduro and it is currently bliss. I don’t think a rework with DHX would achieve anything and waste your time. When I took it off it was at the stage where you stroke it a number of times and the squelch dies down. I know if I ride it more it will probably deteriorate at the same rate as it previously did until the damping gos sour. Thank you for your help.

Loco – the shock was serviced a year ago and it is living the easy life in a box. Thank you for the reply. 🙂

It is not the Loco service that I don’t trust as it came back lovely. It is the shelf life of the shock in general as the dreaded squelch is evident.

The Fox DHX air is pants in my experience. Increased in slurpiness from the day I got it until damping went odd. Had a full Loco service, worked well for a couple of months and then started cavitating again 🙁 I think it is just a bad shock ime.

It now sits in the tool box unloved as I don’t want to pay to service it every 3 months.

Strangely I also have a Fox 2004 triad that has never cavitated and has only required one air canister seal change and a few minor DIY services with float fluid.

Old oros had an issue with the plastic piston in the master cylinder swelling when not used for long periods. This happened to my brake and it was fixed under warranty. The later ones used a different material.

Votchy – The car thing is probably for normal road pads on a car. A car easily generates a lot of heat unlike a mountain bike. It is easy to set new road pads on fire on a car, I know as I have done it when I was a teenager and was stood looking at them and wondering how to put them out! 😆
