just search on here for Cut Gate. Any number of threads see people being warned off after rain.

Is that because we all want to ride responsibly?! I just avoid Cut Gate in boggy conditions because it’s no fun. PS it’s a bridleway so it’s obviously been designed to withstand bikes in all weather, unlike footpaths. [/quote]

You may not care about the erosion but many of the posters on the Cut Gate threads give trail damage as a reason to avoid in bad weather. A lot of bridleways are not “designed” for anything (unless DCC have been at them with a JCB and a truck full of gravel).

do you know anyone that will stay off the moors in wet conditions?

just search on here for Cut Gate. Any number of threads see people being warned off after rain. Plenty of us, even those who sometimes ride FPs, are selective about where we go and when.

**** me! the Grand Tour book appears to be £40 8O

    is it *that* good???

EDIT: why does the swear filter take out the word beginning with “f” that Father Jack used? Surely the whole point of it is that it’s not the one that rhymes with duck?

The feedzone people (or one of them) also worked with/for Lance. I like the portables book but suspect we’re not getting the “pro version” of the recipes

The Grand Tour book looks interesting. I’m in need of cooking inspiration…

    they’re utter bastards, aren’t they?

I’m in south Sheffield and in the last 4/5 years I’ve had:
bike nicked from the garage (the one and only time the bike wasn’t locked to the wall)
garage door hinges broken in a failed attempt to get in again (I’d fitted extra locks)
house broken into (garage remained secure)

The house now has much more security but if it happens again I’ll be posting on here about advice for keeping crocodiles

my only problem with it before was the drops (which are far too narrow for me) and the low long stem.

Ton – you realize that’s pretty much the definition of a road bike?

that bike takes me back to the things we rode in the 80s with cowhorn bars (playing card in the spokes optional)

it’s not the desire to keep out bikes that causes me to question it, just something about the way it’s written.

I have been told by an employee (former) of the NT that they keep records of car number plates that they suspect are owned by cyclists who are using their land. This included the names and addresses of the owners. This was for the Goyt Valley area.

my name and address isn’t on my number plate

did the former employee claim they looked up registered owner details with the DVLA for cars they suspected were owned by cyclists? I’m no data protection expert but i’d assume you need a bit more justification than “I think it’s owned by a cyclist who might be riding on a footpath”

I’d question whether that really comes from the NT or has been put up by the commoners, whoever they are.

I wouldn’t expect you to get great results just on the windowsill. I understand that chilli growers are the reason for all those hydroponics shops you see around.

I didn’t need the sling after the 5th or 6th day. Keeping my hand in my pocket did the same job and I was a bit more presentable at work.

did that not make you look like you were playing pocket billiards? self-abuse has to be a worse look than a sling

on the road bike I do a lot of random riding round Peak district lanes. Not so much on the mtb as it so often ends in bog-wading or miles of tarmac to get back on track. Definitely on my own, if I’m riding with others I try to show them a route that works. But then I most often ride on my own anyway since I’m billy no mates…

I have done the vault over the bars too:
version 1 – vault the bars and stand like a gymnast as bike flies past my ear nearly decapitating me
version 2 – vault the bars, look round to see where the bike is and realize it’s stuck axle-deep in the bog I’m going to have to wade into to retrieve it

remind me why we do this…

last two mtb crashes were both:
    – over the bars and land on back in rock garden
    – Lie there making noises like a wounded moose while I try to decide if I’ve done any real damage
    – Get up slowly, grimacing.

Shimano have different lasts. The more enduro/trainer styles start off a bit roomier than the disco slippers.

Be aware that wide models tend to be *very* wide and high volume. I’ve got wide but low volume feet and I’m best off going for a non-wide fit from a more generous manufacturer, eg Lake.

and if you wear a camera then you’re antagonizing people so you’re the one at fault (that lesson was from a poster on here)

Awaits post explaining that she was wearing a helmet cam and therefore clearly looking for trouble.

some people do find them antagonizing.

can you explain that? I’ll assume you’re not meaning that you personally would feel antagonized by a camera-wearing female

    Telegraph?

I think the shout was probably more like “EEEYAAAARRRRGGGHHH” as in “Evening Mail”

on a similar note, I knew someone who had recordings of BR station announcements which he used as a kids party game to see if anyone could work out where the train was actually going to

The one that used to come round our way suffered from the speech defect which commonly afflicts those who’ve been shouting the same phrase over and over for decades, like the street newspaper sellers of yore and their modern-day conterparts hawking Big Issue

as a kid I was intrigued by the newspaper sellers in Brum (we didn’t have them in the little market town I lived in). I could never work out which paper they were selling when they all just shouted AAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH (imagine a cross between Noddy Holder and a blender full of gravel)

Pik n Mix – which bit of Sheffield? if you’re on the west side you can ride out to a lot of the good trails

that’s patronising, and more than a little sexist.

    classy.

I was using a very obvious sexist stereotype for comedy value. It’s called humour. Obviously you’ll now tell me I’m using the Edinburgh defence but it should have been clear to you I wasn’t serious. Given you had already made reference to always being in the wrong it’s a bit rich to now get so precious. Get over yourself.

boring yes, but too hard? maybe you could take her to ride some disused railway lines instead. With a café stop at the end, and a trip to buy cushions/curtains on the way home, you’re sorted.

ah, the switchbacks. I did find them tough but that’s cos I’m fat, unfit and rubbish at tight turns. To be honest if they’d not been there I’d have had to stop to let my forearms recover from the descents.

I quite like getting most of the climbing out of the way. Crack on, get it done, then enjoy the rest of it.

I do find trail centres are more fun if I’m blasting round as quick as you can rather than the sort of bimbling along I enjoy in the wilds.

one post in and we have a willy waver already…

bearing in mind this is a forum populated by overweight middle-aged cyclists, an awful lot wouldn’t beat 5:40 by very much. I reckon I could manage an 800 in 2:50 but I would need a little sit down afterwards.

It was bucketing it down out in the White Peak and I had not timed it to perfection. Mudguards made no difference at all, I wouldn’t have been wetter if I jumped in a river.

it was hammering it down in Sheffield this evening. I assume it’s the same weather system that stevedoc had in Glossop so it’ll have turned the top of Cut Gate into a mud bath. I love Cut Gate when it’s dry or frozen but it’s far from weather-proof.

1/2 mile to not-very-exciting-but-leads-out-into-the-Peak bridleways or 3 miles to something more interesting. Given how many people have to drive to ride I’m pretty happy with it (albeit still a little envious of some).

I got some nice marmalade in Baslow a few weeks ago (just up the hill from the Spar). No help really since you’ve already got that covered and I’m struggling to think of anywhere doing anything other than eggs and jam.

If it’s the right size for you with flat bars, it won’t be the right size for you with drops. A parts bin special with slicks would work but from experience of building up a commuter the costs mount quickly if you have to buy much.
