Garry_Lager – the long route might have gone that way (joat at least was taking the long way round) but the short one didn’t. Some of the finishing times/speeds on the long route were *very* impressive

where’s your photo taken? feel like I should recognize it

Tour of the Peak – man they like a hill up that way! Winnats Pass and Cat Fiddle, touch day for a porker like me but weather was lovely, really enjoyed it.

theonlywayisup and I did this too. Thought I was going to die on Winnats – everything after that felt (relatively) easy.

Feed Zone Portables gave me lots of good ideas (mini cheese and potato pies, yum). Though given Allen Lim’s history of working with people like Lance and Floyd I do wonder if there were some “special” ingredients that didn’t make it into the book.

Isn’t prince2 terminology different to everyone else’s? (this is just hearsay, i’ve not done it myself)

Project management for dummies seems to exist. Not read it but that series is usually quite intelligible.

a good book that’s not a dry text book

    you’ll be lucky

when I did APMP a few years ago the expectation was that you already had some PM experience so you were getting the skills and theoretical background to explain and improve what you do already. Not sure how it’ll work if you have little experience. Good luck though, a week full time is hard work, especially if you end up trying to do half your real job at the same time.

Wow, the horafactor sure came good on this one.

It’s not just him, you know. What do you think is going through someone’s mind when they hang a bag of dogshit from a tree? “we pay council tax. The council, by default are the respectful third party that are there to handle such things”

(I’ve deleted the what’s this country coming to old man’s rant I was about to post)

Most horse riders I meet are pretty friendly so long as you’re not acting like a cock. Slowing down, saying hello and smiling seem to be very effective (surprise, surprise). Talking to the horse can work too – some of them get freaked by bikes but calm down once they realize the spinny whirry thing is just another human. Mind you, they’re not exactly rational. When I overtook a horse last weekend I said hello to the rider before I caught up and she said it was OK to pass, the reason the horse was acting jumpy was because it was scared of the two shetland ponies in the field

I’ve read most of it. As far as i got, it seemed quite influenced by Freud, albeit updated to 21st century metaphors and without all the oedipal crap (the chimp is definitely the id). I can see how the model could be useful but I have my doubts about how much effect comes from reading a book. I’d guess real benefits come from working with someone as a therapist who pushes you through the exercises.

As a sidebar, I see Steve Peters is described above as “an actual psychologist”. He’s not, he’s a psychiatrist. might not seem important but there are huge differences in the training and (often) the approach they take.

He then went on to demonstrate how to kill said dogs with your pump! Not sure his proposed technique would work with mini pumps or c02 cartridges though.

I read somewhere (probably here) that the answer was to hold the pump between your hands, allow the dog to clamp its jaws between your hands, then lift upwards bringing the dog to near vertical (best do this bit quickly) and kick it hard between the back legs. I suspect this is one of those things that is all well and good in theory but maybe not advisable in practice.

i’ve got an ortlieb one that looks like a dry bag with straps. comfy, high viz yellow and waterproof. I think they do two different sizes. the only bad thing i’ve found is the roll-top can be in my sight line when looking over my shoulder

EDIT: ortlieb velocity – wiggle do them

have they actually made one yet? there only seem to be dodgy rendered images.

maybe they haven’t yet found anyone with the right combination of excessive money and stupidity to buy one. it can only look like a good idea if it’s never going to happen in reality

I’ve looked for this sort of thing in the past. L/s roadie tops always seem to be aimed at cooler weather and l/s mtb tops are usually DH pyjamas if they’re not cold weather gear. Arm warmers seem to be what most go for though I’ve not tried them.

Last time I looked I was doing a lot of climbing so anything I could fit my forearms in was baggy around my biceps (and 6 inches too long). Now I’ve laid off the crimping and have arms like sticks they may fit better :(

Grandpa Nice only gave up riding his bike (very slowly) when he was past 80. He said that while he didn’t mind falling off it was unfair on other people if he did it in front of their car. I plan on riding until I’m no longer capable of staying on the thing.

i’ve got the FR210. It’s only slightly thicker than an average watch and doesn’t look bulky even on my scrawny wrist. From the pics in that review the 220 looks noticeably thinner. Definitely a long way from things like the 910 (though obviously it doesn’t have so many functions)

i’d guess it’s not the same people dropping gel wrappers that are abandoning bags of dog poo (assuming it’s dog poo) but I agree it’s all grim. why they can’t just let their dog poo in the bushes then leave it there along with all the fox, deer, squirrel, badger etc crap is beyond me

why would you want to? it sounds like my strika circa 1980 which had rigid forks done up to look like triple clamps

EDIT: yes, I know now that the “fork boot” bit is in the wrong place but I didn’t when I was 7

Thought it would make sense to keep an existing thread going for this…

Is this trail on the DCC plans?
    closed BW Holmesfield

They’ve been busy flattening other trails round here that really didn’t need it (e.g. Car Rd) but the one that is a real mess has been “closed” since 2012 with no sign of any progress and the sign has been recently replaced with one saying it’ll be closed until 31st May 2015.

why do you want a trail centre? there’s all sorts of beginner friendly routes in the Peak, you just need to change your mindset. Instead of “how do I link up all the really good bits” try “how do I avoid all the really good bits wihtout just going up and down the Tissington trail”. white peak may work better than dark.

Reality is that you’re going to find beginner-friendly routes a bit boring so you need to make them somewhere you’d like to be (i.e. not a trail centre) and accept that it’s a day out and not a proper ride.

it does dry out and it’s possible to find it empty of walkers though you need to pick your time carefully. I started one summer’s day in Hope, leaving the car about 6:30. Descending cave dale at 7, the Beast a bit later and all without a red sock in sight :-)

Pro-ject have a very good reputation. Rega are also very good but maybe more expensive. At that price Pro-ject will do fine.

If the amp covers the CD player to speakers bit then it’s an integrated amp (i.e. both pre-amp and power amp in the same box).

Does the amp have a line in called “phono”? If yes, job’s a goodun, plug it in and you’re away. If not, you need a phono stage because turntables are quieter than other sources. There are plenty of phono stages about but don’t pay too much given the rest of the system. Google is your friend here.

Same advice probably applies to the turntable. Don’t bother spending too much unless you’re going to upgrade the whole lot. Better to spend the money on new music.

last time I had a near one at that point it was a bloke in a hyoooge bentley who couldn’t wait 20 seconds for the road to widen. He gave me plenty of room but the chap in a car coming the other way had very little clearance between a bentley one side and a stone wall the other.

EDIT: independent of any specific incident, it’s a bloody awful bit of road that I’m always happy to leave behind

    I would DEFINITELY recommend insurance.

This little “vacation” cost about four grand in total…

I love the way the look on the cat’s face says “you utter ****, when I find the **** **** who did this to me I’m going to rip their **** guts out through their shitty arsehole and strangle them with their own entrails”. [/joe pesci in goodfellas]

A sick dog would be doing the big soppy sad eyes to get some TLC. Cats can be cute but they all have a bit of Begbie about them

i use a forerunner watch on the bike (it was bought for running). It’s fine for tracking routes but for anything else a bike computer would be far better. it would also save strava from complaining every time I upload a ride because they default to runs

bit late for you now, but you can avoid much of that bit of chesterfield road (on the way in) by turning off onto shoreham street which will bring you out at the leadmill. The bad bit on the way home seems to be woodseats which I don’t have an answer for apart from leave early or late.
