Still time to cancel the order.

shhhh… it’s clearly been stressful getting this far, he needs to stop worrying and get out there and enjoy the new toy (whichever one it actually is)

I don’t even know how manufacturers can sell a car/bike that’s not limited to 70!

Come on, I’m sure you can do better than that! 1/10

is this saga still going on? some people on here could have bought a bike, changed half the components, and then replaced it with something else entirely in this time

I can’t speak for the cannondale but the whyte will do you fine and may be a bit more commuting oriented (shallow drop bars, lots of clearance etc). Just get it bought!

me too. On chrome, which appears not to give an option of “**** it, what’s the worst that can happen”

EDIT: “me too” as in I’m still getting the message

EDIT #2: I have found the button to ignore safety warnings 🙂

who’s doing the voiceover? I know I know the voice but can’t get a face or name.

EDIT: I have now seen the credits. Iain Glen meant nothing but Ser Jorah Mormont I do know.

the-muffin-man – agreed you don’t need a DAC, just something to get the analogue signal out. Taking the signal from the lightning port should be better quality than the headphone socket and there seem to be plenty of cable options available.

moshimonster – thanks for backing me up, I was expecting one of those “you’re an idiot” responses 🙂

DAC varied in different versions of the iPod but most (referring to full-size iPod here) are reckoned to be quite good – at least good enough that it’s not the weak link unless you’re putting the output through high level kit.

The amp in the iPod can be a weak link – I use an external amp for headphones and it’s noticeably better than the internal amp. This means taking the output from the big connector not from the headphone output.

I read that devices which use a digital output from an iPod are rare because Apple demand large licence fees to give up critical information about how to decode the data. I know this is a vague statement, it was ages ago that I read it and I’m not an expert.

The fact the ‘victim’ knows he has a different bike, doesn’t help him to not look like a local busybody.

or the victim of repeated attacks by an unhinged lunatic who needs to be locked up before he kills someone (sounds silly but that’s how it could be presented if you have an inexplicable hatred of bikes)

I recently got a castelli gabba softshell jersey in a sale. Even in the sale it wasn’t cheap but it’s fantastic. A small amount of water beads on the surface – after that you get wet but stay warm. I really want a long sleeve one but it’s even more expensive…

Also a fan of the endura jersey mentioned by thisisnotaspoon for dry conditions.

I rode into work the morning after a mate’s stag (this was the night I made it home safely then woke up at 3 in the morning lying on the landing with the light on). All the way in I was looking at the pavement and thinking if I fell off in the right direction I could have a nice lie down. The man himself made it in at lunchtime and his boss sent him straight back home.

so far as I can tell some of these firms are given/sold the numbers by BT. I got a new number and the day after it was activated and before I had given the number to anyone I started getting calls about compensation, accidents, kitchens, solar panels etc etc.

Now signed up for TPS and the number of calls is going down but still got a call from the computer maintenance centre this week. The chap on the end was quite persistent in sticking to his script even after I greeted him with “this is the scam where you tell me that I have errors on my computer and offer to fix them, isn’t it?”

is the Conti Grand Prix GT a race tyre? I’ve the GP 4 season tyres (in 25c) and they’re excellent. A bitch to fit but lots of grip and no punctures in >2000 miles

EDIT: I’ve probably cursed myself now

that’s very reasonable for a Ti seatpost – I stand corrected. Still puzzled by the idea of changing seatpost instead of saddle and insistence on 23c tyres, mind.

Ti seatposts are not going to meet the “cheap” criterion. Maybe try asking for one of these instead?

get yourself the ordnance survey map for the area then you can find the bridleways etc that aren’t used for the routes in the book. That will help you to get from where you are to the routes with a minimum of road. You might have to accept a bit of tarmac but so long as you stick to minor roads it’s rarely that bad (I ride out from Sheffield to pick up the eastern routes from that book).

Never saw the point myself. Even as a card-carrying girlie swot of a pubescent, the idea that I’d spend my free time protecting my school books seemed bizarre behaviour to me.

in my case the penis drawing had extended to my so-called mate drawing (in black marker) a near lifesize spurting cock and hairy balls across the cover of my exercise book 5 minutes before I was due to hand in homework. I had to pretend I’d left the book at home and cover it that night. Nothing to do with protecting the book.

    I’m going for a £2000 2015 robaix.

It’s got discs, 25mm tires and it can have mud guards.

Can’t see anything wrong with it.

check the mudguard clearance before you buy. Just because it says it has clearance, or it has mudguard eyes, that doesn’t mean it actually has room for 25c tyres and guards (assuming you want the wheels to go round). That’s where many of the other bikes you were looking at (charge, whyte, planetx etc) come in.

I’m sorry 6079smithw, but that is hilariously bad. It’s even funnier knowing it’s serious. There is loads of good original new music out there (even if some of it does make reference to booty) but that’s not it.

I tried 25s for the first time last winter. Hated them and was very glad to switch back to 23s,

Just a guess, but you might be a fair bit lighter than most STWers?

I’m sure I read (no, I don’t have a link) that wider tyres feel slower but are faster on less than perfect surfaces, with the fastest for crappy british tarmac being 27c and narrower tyres being fastest on smoother roads.

I’ve an ortlieb one that is very similar to that dhb one but *a lot* simpler design. I think it came from wiggle. Basic, waterproof, comfortable. Only downside is the top corners are visible when I look over my shoulder – I guess that’s what some of the additional bits are for on the dhb.

but shurely turning the thermostat up to max makes the room warm up quicker just like setting the aircon to arctic makes it cool down quicker???? the world will be turned upside down if my method of just setting it to the temperature I actually want turns out to be right

I found even the hire chipper got jammed up all the time. I spent more time fishing chewed up bits of hedge out of it than anything else. I think I’d buy a trailer ahead of a chipper.

Reporting back from test ride of a Suffolk. I’ve bought a 54. I’m sure a 56 could have been made to fit with a shorter stem but I suspect top tube clearance would have been minimal and this one feels/looks right. Given the contrasting experiences on this thread the advice has to be to get a test ride and be prepared to consider a component swap.

“wide” fittings are often high volume as well, i.e. high instep. Good for some people but not for all. In shimano’s range the more casual looking shoes use a wider/deeper last than the disco slippers (it’s all on the website). Lake tend to have a slightly wider fit even in the normal fitting.

Only downside I have heard of is girls in short skirts/shorts find their legs stick in a hot summer

this brings back terrible memories of 70’s plastic seats hotter than the surface of the sun and the smell of burnt flesh if you forgot to put something down to sit on
