Even less seriously, the best answer I ever saw to one of these questions was years ago on misc.fitness.weights: “cut your head off with an axe” 😆

    It’s simple energy balance

so if I eat once per day, 2500 calories of cheesecake at midnight, this will be the same as getting my 2500 calories from a “healthy” diet split across 3 meals and a couple of snacks?

Since what and when you eat affects how much of your intake is used/stored it’s not that simple. If it was, we’d all be ripped and we wouldn’t have to have these discussions.

rode past with a cheery hello

may not have helped. The last thing I need if I’m struggling on a hill is some smug **** cruising past being jovial while I’m blowing through my arse

EDIT: I’m surprised that got picked up by the swear filter, I thought I’d picked something only slightly rude. maybe it’s feeling sensitive today

Mmmm… that Fiio player looks very interesting. Good to see a manufacturer stepping up to provide a portable player for those of us who want to choose what to listen to after we’ve gone out.

BTW, I used ripcaster last year. There is a cost involved but it was worth it not to have to spend forever feeding CDs into a laptop.

retro83 – can you expand on how you do this with EAC? I know it’s a powerful tool but it’s not the most user friendly thing I’ve ever seen.

you can use EAC in secure mode with AccurateRip enabled. Then encode to FLAC and add replaygain with FB2k and transcode to AAC or MP3 for portability

I use FLAC files on the main system but also want an mp3 copy for portable devices.

When I grow spuds, they get put in a hessian (or you could try large paper bag) type sack, which is left in our cool garage.

I keep my spuds in a sack too. Fortunately no-one makes me leave them in the garage.

I had a dog who wasn’t much into swimming until she had mobility problems and couldn’t walk far. Once she’d got used to the hydrotherapy she loved it. In her case it was a small swimming pool with an underwater jet at one end – the dog swims towards the jet which keeps them in one place.

my last package from wiggle was via collect+. The system claimed it was received but it couldn’t be found. When they did find it the next day it was damaged. Nothing to do with the xmas rush, just that yodel can’t be trusted to deliver.

If I could tick a box “none of the above” I would vote. But I’m not going to waste my vote for the current crop of idiots and I’m not willing to take part in a sham democracy.

so spoil your ballot paper. They get recorded so it’s the nearest you can get to “none of the above”

I recall loads of brilliant sounding vinyl. I can’t think of anything that hasn’t sounded better on CD though.

Really? I know you get a few crackles on vinyl but the recordings I’ve got on both formats definitely sound better (more realistic, more detail) on vinyl. I appreciate it’s less convenient etc but there’s something about it that makes me feel the musicians are there in the room with me.

Recently most vinyl comes with a free download of mp3/flac files so there’s no need for buying CD as well.

search the site for people’s comments on the Suffolk, there are 2 or 3 of us who have one.

I’m very happy with it. Not much slower than my summer bike (Domane) though less comfortable. Plenty of clearance for 28mm tyres and mudguards and everything works as it should.

One selling point for me was a review (can’t remember where) noting that the frame uses fancy profiled tubes so it should be at least a little bit more comfortable than the planet x. Web search for reviews should find it for you.

I think I’m going to start drinking alcohol free lager in the office

we were discussing that at my place. we couldn’t think of an objective reason not to do it (apart from it would feel very wrong) but suspected that someone somewhere would find or create a rule to stop us

The 2015 Paris Roubaix is being used a “test” event for disc brakes. The fact that most teams run specific bikes for P-R now means that the cost of setting them up with disc brakes is far less than it otherwise would be and the conditions are perfect for discs. Win all round.

Be approved by 2016 I reckon (unless there’s a major drama where a rider slices his fingers off in a rotor…)

Shall we start a sweepstake on who’s first? Bagsy Froome.

I do my best to allow parents to take time off in school holidays but that’s because I’m nice, not because it would be discrimination if I didn’t. They chose to have the kids, it’s not my fault holidays are more expensive then. A bit of give and take works wonders for keeping everyone happy.

one of the issues with treatment costs in US is pricing models. If you pay for your own care it costs far more than if it was billed to your insurer (they get preferential rates). I suspect that insurance via an employer costs them less than it would cost an individual. All comes back to the point that it’s a great system if you’re in a good job and well paid but many people don’t get the same level of service.

I love the way the trail dog runs ahead then waits for the rider to catch up 😀

Any dog I’ve ever owned would have been either under the wheels, running off in the wrong direction or trying to chase sheep (NB they were always kept on a lead around sheep).

Australianisms are good. A workmate was told on her first day she could wear her thongs on a Friday. It turned out they meant flip flops (dress down day).

And apparently sprog means spunk while spunk doesn’t mean jizz 😕

I’d say tyres first. This summer I changed my usual tractor tyres for something much more racy and found I rode everywhere at least one gear higher. IME tubeless allows me to run lightweight tyres that with tubes would pinchflat twice a ride unless I pumped them up super hard (and then I had no grip). After tyres, light wheels will be noticeable but cost a lot more.

I will need to be washed, fed and put to bed in as short a time as possible.

    You’d be doing the work.

is he really asking you to wash him and tuck him up in bed? I fear if I read more carefully there’d something in the small print about wiping his arse for him as well. He really could have phrased it an awful lot better.

that halo stuff has been very effective for me at getting long-term smells out of base layers that were still stinky after washing. I’m hoping it doesn’t need using very time.

steerer above top cup depends on your stem. You don’t need spacers other than to get the bars at the right height so just slightly less steerer than stem height is sufficient. Measure the headtube on your frame, your stem, and decide if you need spacers for the bar height.

new forks come with a very long steerer – just look at any picture of a bike set up without cutting it. No idea of the actual measurement.

I did it in September this year and it was beautiful on top. slight breeze to take the edge off the heat but very comfortable in shorts and s/s jersey. It does have a reputation for having its own weather (and the region generally gets some big storms) but I’d have thought a local weather forecast would warn you of extremes. I think I carried arm warmers just in case.

    EDIT:

OP, are you going up there this time of year? if yes, plenty back-up clothing is probably a very good idea

It’s illegal, largely because home distilled drinks can contain high quantities of methanol, which will send you blind.

since when has the risk of going blind stopped anyone doing anything?

interesting to hear iyengar yoga being called easy. I did it years ago and didn’t find it easy. there wasn’t the leaping around you get in some yoga classes, more a case of find the position and hold it until your muscles complain from holding your weight. Maybe depends more on the teacher.

Now doing pilates which is definitely helping with core strength and sorting out some other weaknesses.
