    Yorkshire rhubarb mess.

Like eton mess, but with rhubarb instead (might need to poach in sugar a bit first, depending on how sharp the rhubarb is)

    You should try orienteering.

Never. Around roads and other people, it’s a loss of peripheral awareness which can be downright dangerous. Watching people jump as you run/cycle past them from behind because they have no clue that you are there.

Never understood why you’d want to do it outdoors.
Out on the hills and stuff I want to hear nature.
    It’s thinking time; processing time.
Outside, you’re out there to be out there. Putting on headphones puts you back in a little closed environment – you might as well run on a treadmill.

It’s those big wheels, innit? Make you faster – less rolling resistance.

Will probably do a bit of an MTB loop on t’moor and end up on the Cow n Calf road in time to see them struggle past, then to the pub!

Alternatively, I might just find the Ilkley Brewery beer tent and stay there.:)

Occasionally, just to make sure they don’t seize on.

I’m a big fan of backing things off occasionally, and re-torquing so they don’t seize, especially considering the crap we ride in.

Mind you, some components don’t last long enough to seize.

So icing and strapping has meant that despite a bit purply blue, it was ok to ride this morning.
Beautiful morning, sun, cold, riding well.

    And then…

Puncture. Road bike tyre. Sprained thumb.

I had to laugh. I haven’t had a road bike puncture for about 8 years. Then 2 days after spraining my thumb I then have to try roll the tyre off one and a half handed…

    Ho hum. Sh1t happens.

Thanks all (especially for all your other disaster stories – although none seemed to involve drinking)

Not too bad today – lots of purple and swollen, but I think all the icing last night and compression has kept the swelling down. Can actually grip things now. Still a bit sore, mind.

Going to thoroughly tape and protect for weds, but ain’t nothing going to stop me riding the moors when it’s dry and fast like it is now. 🙂

@RoterStern – I wondered when someone would suggest singlespeed. 🙂

lazybike – it has never been acceptable. For some of us, it never even occurs to us to drop/leave litter.
I am thankful that I seem to have drilled this into my kids’ heads as well.

Thanks guys. Good idea about the notches.

Considering going 1X10 anyway with my old deore triple cranks, so that’ll just mean popping the new bearing in and not worrying about spacers. 🙂

But I’ve often wondered about taking a cheap package holiday to Spain, say, and using the hotel and “all inclusive” as a base from which to go on longer rides into the interior/mountains from the coast.

Tried that once, and couldn’t bear the attitude of the other guests for the short time I was in the hotel :-/

    [/quote]

    Ah yes. I did mention that I’m a bit of a misanthrope…
Don’t want to holiday near other people if I can avoid it. 🙂

I scrape together time to cycle and run all year round, but rarely more than grabbing a few hours here or there.
e.g. 6am in the morning on the moors. Or commuting to work on the bike (which I haven’t been able to do recently)

Evil IT contractor, so a new job every year, nearly…

    srsly.

Taught maths for a year, saw the light.
Couple of perm jobs in development
IT Contracting for a few years.
3 years running a software company (who would ever want to employ anyone?)
    4 years back contracting.

    I get bored quickly.

I’ve found that most OEM bits on bikes aren’t really suited to the conditions we ride in in the UK.
    E.g. DT Swiss hub/freewheel – useless thing.
    Ritchey Pro headset. Rubbish.
truvativ / SRAM PF BB – meh.

I could go on. Needless to say, the hope BB, headset and wheelset have been grand since I replaced them all. 🙂

At what point does it become worth building your own new bike given that separates cost so much more.

    +1 for westbrook.

Got my spark 35 from them, they’ve been really good when I’ve had any issues (RD, Forks, Shifters)

+1 you should be able to use all.

Looks like taking out one set of links will help and not compromise the large/large combo.
As someone else said, one set of links at a time.

    Poor show from builder.

    +1 Montane featherlite smock
+1 On One smorgasbord – does what it says on the label (mind you, does squirm a lot in really slimy mud)
Scarves in general – who’d have thought they could make such a difference
£50 light from bright bike lights.
    Hope customer service (as always)

    I have elixr 5s I think. 2.5 years / 3000km / 250 hrs use in the sh1ttiest of UK conditions

Bled once in that time, because I had a stuck caliper so serviced the brakes at the same time.

They aren’t perfect – a little squeal, sometimes calipers get a little sticky – but I’ve not had a big problem.

Mind you, I have a set of Hayes Sole on my old marin HT that have never been serviced in the 8 years I have been using them.

This is Frankenbike. Built from bits acquired from ebay, friends, the parts bin, plus some new bits from the LBS

Ribble frame base, R500 wheels, 105 shifters and mechs, SRAM chainset.

Not quite right for me, but a good workhorse. Learned a lot building it

    Try this.

Ha. That’s exactly what happened to me a couple of months back.

LBS, just got the hot air gun to it, and then some careful punching out.

I guess the blind bearing puller might be able to expand into the outer race and then you can pull it? Never tried it, personally.

Ah now, I was going to acquire a slide hammer anyway. Is it possible to get a purchase on the outer race with it?

Always scared of pushing/tapping out on an inner race as sometimes the bearing will explode. Did on my swing arm bearings anyway. 🙁

    Had crossed my mind.
Had also considered buying the full kit as will need new bearings in the next two years probably anyway, and spares can always be sold to idiots unfortunate people like me.

    Ho hum.

No, found that one already – that’s the 2009 model. They changed the design in 2011/12 ish.
    🙁

Argh. Scott don’t sell these things separately. They have a kit, which contains all the bits for replacing every pivot. £100

Dammit. Anyone got a knackered Spark 2012 onwards model with some spare its? 😀

Fell running (never on road), Orienteering, Road bike, used to play Hockey, until hips started giving up.
Have lots of canoes/kayaks, never have time to use them.
