seeing as i can’t see a summing-up of the video (not even by the OP, who saw fit to quote a critic of the video, who also hadn’t seen it), i’m going to listen/watch myself 😮 wish me luck! 😆

my bro got knocked down by a police warden, and so the police told him they weren’t going to investigate, despite the many witnesses. as thick as thieves…

handicaps is funny, reminds me of my mate – he’s been racing some races and normally comes nearish the top of the sport class. then some people from the next class up started dropped to his category and he started to place far lower. the irony was lost on him 😆

maybe they think some regular joe telling them how to design a bike is just a bit innapropraite and really don’t want to give customers the impression that as a company they know nothing about designing a bike and rely on customers to tell them what’s wrong?

what exactly is the problem you’ve identified?

Spectrum was generally for poor people

maybe in your posho area! spectrum was for the rich kids here – they got the spectrums, then us pooros got a c64, then the richos got a c64 and ended up with two computers… 😉

i too am a big josie dew fan. i’ve read wind in my wheels more than any other book.

i really like betina selby as well, though it’s difficult to get her books nowadays. her style is quite dry but it has some quite depthy historical background to the places she’s been through. an issue with some of her books is that the reissues seem to be self-published and have not benefitted from decent proofreading, making it pretty hard going at times. but i think it’s worth the effort (and if you get the original issues then they’re fine anyway)

at the minute i’m really enjoying the Bicycle Diaries by david byrne of talking heads. his cycling is focused around city riding as he travels about the globe. he’s got some really interesting insights into architecture and culture and politics and that…

well, i managed to get to berwick-upon-tweed, but not without some difficulty! druidh – i’ll give you the potted highlights.

    – tried for the 6.57am train for dunbar from haymarket – they wouldn’t let me on without a pass for my bike! so i missed it and had to wait two hours…

    – the john muir way is all ridable from dunbar to cockburnspath, except for the very last bit between The Linn and Dunglass Bridge, where the trail is on the beach and is a push through the loose pebbles.

    – from dunglass bridge, i followed the (decent) signs for SUW/cockburnspath which takes you up a nice trail past dunglass and then breaks left to CBP. i followed the SUW along the coast south from here.

    – at the end of the SUW at the caravan park, lots of signs for the new section of coast path abound, so i took a chance. all i can say is, DON’T! a lot of the paths were new so not easy to follow. many were fairly deep grass and/or muddy. it was exhausting!

    – i spoke to a guy who was surprised i got through this section of coast path as there is a farmer (i think at dowlaw) who doesn’t let people across his land. i would have been devastated had i have had to turn back then!

    – i missed the original berwickshire coastal path (st abbs – berwick-u-t) because time was getting on. next time i might ride the roads between cockburnspath and st abbs and get back onto the the coast path there, as from memory it’s a lot easier to ride….

that is all! it was a great day really, 40 miles all in 🙂 plus a bit more in the morning when i took a spin on some of the tracks on arthur’s seat while i waited for my train 😉

thanks again. i’ve heard of the website but never found it before. it really didn’t seem to highlight much in the way of potential coastal paths though i could be missing something. one of the routes i was considering instead is shown as a double track on the OS map, but looks kinda vague on the satelite view. which is worrying. without better guidance (and with light being limited) i think i’ll stick to easy-to-navigate roads for the cockburnspath – st abbs section…

thanks for that druidh, i’ll bear the restrictions in mind! i’ve cycled a bit of the section you mentioned and it was both ridable and fun. i’ve rode from edinburgh to dunbar before on the john muir way so i expect the john muir way from dunbar to cockburnspath to be similarly ridable. which i guess just leaves the cockburnspath – st abbs section of the berwickshire coast path. i can’t even see many paths that could constitute this route. i think for that section i’ll stick to the minor roads.

there’s never a coastkid around when you need one! 🙂

other than geometry, what are the main differences between the inbred and 456? i thought the 2nd gen were close to the 456 in strength terms, what with the increase in toptube size.

i’m not so sure on huey, after interview with one of the eagles of death metal and with a justification for gun ownership being that you can protect your country from presidents you don’t like.

i really like tom ravenscroft. the mix of music on that show is so great, it’s a shame his ancestry means he may not get judged fairly…

white spirit. the end. at least, in this flat…

What? the end of the carpet or the black oily mark?

no! the carpet is still “beige with a pink hue” according to my better half. 😉

would that be the same as this basic merlin build but with a slightly worse hub and only a couple of quid cheaper?

also, up to what tyre size can be used on a 317? i can’t find a mavic chart…

haha, thanks poly, the argument i was poorly trying to make was that the benzine etc fumes would affect something or other in younger people. and therefore perhaps it may be safer for a kid to be in the car than walking through the forecourt.

EDIT i just read the responses to my earlier comment and had a proper LOL 😆

i worked in a petrol station many years ago and i remember the boss not allowing anyone under the age of 16 to operate the pumps, because of health reasons. would the same reasoning apply to keeping a kid in the car?

i had an ‘incident’ with a clio driver in the fountainbridge area about a year ago. if it’s the same guy i’d be able to get his reg as he lives in one of these streets… is it worth it though?

yeah, that kielder was awful – isn’t the first section of downhill on tarmac 😯

i actually quite like carron valley, and so does my girlfriend! so there! 😛

i like kirroughtree but it’s probably a bit overrated. i remember mbuk once saying it was really easy to get round but i always find it a bit of a slog. i wish there were bigger descents!

EDIT: are calderdale and the peak district classed as trail centres now? if we can choose anywhere where people cycle then i can think of far worse!

for me i was driving from banbury to brackley in oxon/northants. i had been driving for less than a year at that point so pretty inexperienced. i was following a chicken wagon, and the driver behind me was getting pretty pissed that i wasn’t overtaking it. so, we got to a straight and i decided to give it a go – at the time i just felt so much pressure! so i overtook, but realised i had no chance to get past before the oncoming car hit me. i hit the brakes hard and fishtailed and somehow managed to get in back behind the lorry (from being halfway past it). funnily enough, the driver behind who had been ragging my arse just gave me a solid full-beam blast for 30 seconds.

but that story is nothing compared to my girlfriend’s: when she was a kid, she went on holiday with her folks to spain. one evening, after having spent many many hours in a bar, my girlfriend begged her dad (her mum was elsewhere) to go for a pizza. the dad wasn’t for turning, but eventually gave in and they trotted across the road to a pizza joint. moments later a drunk-driver careered into the bar they had been in, right through the seats they’d been sat in. thankfully nobody was hurt…

oooh, who wants to hear my anecdotal evidence?! it seems to my on my commute that more people riding on the off-road cycle paths seem to have helmets than those on the road. which suggests that helmet wearers are more risk-averse. it seems counter-intuitive. but no matter, i’m tough-skinned, and await your onslaught 🙂
