Have a good look on here[/url], you’ll soon get an idea of common issues with both T4 & T5. They’re pretty helpful over there.

I’ve got an early T4, pre-facelift interior 2.4D AAB engine, camper conversion. Love driving it, when you get to a hill you just plant your foot and wait a week till you get to the top!

The common issue with the T4s is a rattle from the engine, commonly mistaken for tappet noise but its actually the push rod in the vac pump, not a major issue. If you test one that rattles, pump the brake peddle, if the rattle stops its the vac pump, not a knackered engine! :D

Are you looking at a T3, T4 or T5? (guessing it wont be anything older than that?)

Just noticed they also have the 6″ rotors for a tenner ish here. Prob worth it if you’re paying shipping anyway. :D

Piece of pee to bleed, not sure how you could have difficulty to be honest! I use a large syringe instead of the hayes squeezy bottle, then just some hose into an old water bottle on the reservoir end as per the hayes instructions. Push-pull till all bubbles gone. By far easier than Avids and a solid lever every time.

Yes the levers look right both ways, there’s also a bleed port on both sides as they’re designed to be flipped over.

they dont come with mounts so they’ll fit 160mm PM straight, otherwise you’ll need a mount for 180mm PM or IS.

Shipping works out a about a fiver ish. I think they may have some decent prices on the shimano rotors too if you’re paying shipping anyway, didnt look that closely though as i’ve already got rotors.

I have some red metal 5’s that are a good few years old and taken some abuse over plenty of miles. they’d been in the garage for a while till I bought my sanderson frame last week. I dug the red metals out to give them a once over, stripped both hubs expecting to find siezed bearings, the grease in the front hub was so clean it was still white, the NDS of the rear was the same, the freehub was a little mucky. I was amazed at how well sealed they are, all bearings were still running very smooth.
I spent last night with the hair dryer taking the stickers off the rims, now they’re all ready to go on the new build!
If you dont mind the weight, I’d say go for them, I assume the 10’s have the same hubs as the 5’s (I think the 5’s were the lowest spec when I got them). And they’re not that heavy compared to other budget offerings for the same price.

plastic pipe, cut half way up so its splayed into 4 pieces with a bung wedged in it (like a cork or something) to hold them apart.

bash away with no risk of scoring.

Dont know about chopping the scans down, maybe photoshop?

You can still get OS on MOBAC if you use “Ordnance Survey Explorer Maps (UK)” as the source. :D

Think the limit is 1024 x 1024. At least thats the setting I use in MOBAC when creating custom maps for my etrex.

I bleed my hayes and juicies with one syringe, using an adapted version of the hayes technique.

basically, syringe on the caliper, tube from lever reservoir to an old bottle, push fluid up through, pull syringe a few times to get bubbles out of caliper, flick lever a few times, keep pushing fluid through till no more bubbles.

works every time i’ve done it. I use the syringe instead of the hayes squeezy bottle as its much easier to get the fluid flowing and to pull the air back out of the caliper.

I’m sure that the Merlin Malt 2 was made by kinesis, good price at the mo. Also the Malt 3 which Merlin tell me is a bit more XC geometry and slightly lighter.

    Both would suit.

(or select “Ordanace Survey Explorer Maps (UK)” as the source and choose zoom level 15.)

but dont go using it too much and overloading that source too!

Sorry, I realise that wasn’t particularly useful.

Start in Kilnsey, head up mastilles lane, then take the right hand track at the end, seen here (I hope that works).
Thats a nice trail, bit of grassy climbing but some nice riding after that. Follow it all the way to Hawkswick and back on the road to Kilnsey.
May be a bit shorter than 20 miles though.

Other option is Barden Moor, not sure how far from you that is though, park up in Embsay, then head out up this road, to the top of the hill, turn right onto this bridleway down to Bolton Abbey for an ice cream, then along the road to go back up the hill on this green lane to the go over the top of the moor on this bridleway, there’s a nice decent at the end, then back on the road to Embsay.

Hope thats a bit more helpful! (the barden route is the better of the two, but I think its a bit further away from you)

Good to see Ministry getting a mention there, remember seeing them at the kerrang big day out at milton keynes many years ago.

Skinny Puppy are also good for some industrial-ness, the video for pro-test has some good break dancing in it!

Oh, and what about NIN? Dont think they’ve been mentioned yet?

I put a laser duotech exhaust on my DL650 because the standard one looked like it belonged on a skootah, ruining the look of the bike IMO and made it sound like a sewing machine.
With the duotech it actually sounds like a v twin now, but could be mistaken for stock sound at normal speeds and looks like it belongs on the bike. :D
Also seemed to help a lot with economy, I get an extra 20 miles per tank for some reason!

I’ve got a Trek Soho S for commuting on.

The S means its the singlespeed version not the belt drive hub gear thing with a coffee cup.

Bought it a couple of years ago in evans sale on a bit of a whim, its actually very nice to ride, my commute is 17.5 miles and its certainly comfy enough for that. Comes with Bonty bits on it too so spec is decent enough for the price.

90% of the riding I do is with the wife, we’re at pretty much the same level, she might be a bit fitter than me but i’m a bit quicker on the tech bits. We’ve been riding together that long that its wierd when riding with someone else.

One thing i’ll say is to make sure you comment on things she’s doing well, dont get annoyed as it’ll just make you dread riding with her. Focus on the positive and there’s no reason you can’t go for rides by yourself if you need to get out and ride as fast as you possibly can!

    Think i’m pretty lucky though!

Me and a few others were commenting the other day about how much stiffer SRAM shifters are than shimano. I’d look at trying an XT shifter and see if its any better.

I’ve got one, its cracking as far as I can tell.

The bar mount is a little pricey for what it is but it holds it secure.

The maps are available to download if you look hard enough, or there’s a couple of threads on here about using software to “grab” them from websites like multimap.

It replaced my Vista HCx, its much better in my opinion, doesnt feel too big on the bars like the vista could.

The screen is OK for following a pre-planned route, i still tend to take a print of the map in my pocket though and use that if we need to plan a diversion.

    Go ferrit!

Are the poppers that important? I do sometimes do them up when I’m wearing an Endura undershort – but more often than not I wear something without poppers underneath.

Not the clickfast liner poppers, the one on the waistband at the front.

Depending on the headset fitting of the frame (ask the manufacturer) you can get hope pick and mix cups with a 1 1/8 top cup and a reducer bottom cup, thats what I have in my Kona to fit straight forks into its tapered head tube.

Also think there’s a headset finder on the cane creek site that’ll tell you what you need if your frame is listed.

Always found the national trust sites in the Lakes good, more trees etc to break the site up, not just a farmer trying to cram as many people into a field as possible. Used to be first come first served but you can book them online now.

Because the bread is still warm when wrapped so if it was sealed the steam would make your bread soggy, then this thread would be “why is my french bread always soggy”!
