Hello, As a Friends of Baildon Moor member, I am drafting a general use/access policy for Baildon Moor. One specific focus is to get a more formal acknowledgement from Bradford Council that off-road cycling is permitted on Baildon Moor, with some caveats.
This is an Urban Common, as Ilkley Moor, so requires the landowner’s consent for such “reasonable recreational access”. I had only heard tell of the Ilkley Moor statement until now (I had not been able to find it before now). The proposals re MTBs on Baildon Moor would expected to be fairly similar to this, though I’d like to re-phrase it in places.
I’m not looking to open a wide discussion here but would be interested in specific feedback on the previous post and if riders would be willing to abide by it on Baildon Moor- most already do. Thanks in advance.

Interesting, I’ve just got Nerve 9 HS (small). It is a great bike but find the lower BB height gives noticably less rock clearance than my Marin Rock Springs. Cranks are 170mm. I guess fitting smaller/thinner pedals than CB Mallets would help but had not thought of a longer fork to give slight increase in BB height here. Would slacken the fork angle too….

I have 4 or 5 DX lighs and always go for Cree emitters for more lumedn per watt, as the 2nd model. 1st one has a Seoul. Battery pack problems in th reviews are a worrying but 18650 cells are cheap & easy from DX; I’ve had no problems with these.
Housing & reflector look good. Don’t expect to get the claimed 900 lumens.

Yeah, I had 04 Rock Springs as my first full sus which I'm pretty sure was the same frame. I only had 6 weeks or so before it got nicked (from lock up at work) 2 years ago but it was really good. Didn't notice any bob problem but recall rear shock had ProPedal. Sure it was not single pivot though. Liked the idea of the 3 way travel selection but always had it set to full travel in in that short Yorkshire winter experience. Got an 07 Rock Springs with new TARA sus on the basis of that experience. BB was not good; much better after went to Hope HT2. Story from LBS was that Marin had found a load of 04 models in a warehouse in 2007 so there were quite a few at a good price then: ~ £1k. Good luck.

I've had 1 pair of the Endura eVent 3/4 length. These were great; completely waterproof and not too sweaty, but all-weather off-road commutes & rides wore bum out. ATC got them replaced by Endura with new Venturi version. These were even better but the taped seams started going very quickly. I'm on my third pair but in 2 weeks pocket seams are already coming apart. I expect to have to get a refund and buy something more robust, like Gore Alp-X. Shame really.

Anyone try one of those Hummer paratroop folding bikes? There were a few on ebay a while ago. F/S 100mm travel?? V brakes

I've just got that on my Hope stainless steel HTII ones. Started out with excess play. LBS (who installed it a year+ ago) said it is shld be cleaned/lubed every few months….oops. I took cups off and lubed it and it was OK for a few weeks but its slackened off agin and now clicky so reckon new bearings are needed.

Cheers for that. I'm doing this for the first time. Web site says:
•The bicycle must be packaged in a bicycle box or bag
•Only one bicycle per bicycle box or bag will be permitted
•No other items can be carried in the bicycle box (i.e. clothing)
•The handlebars must be flush with the frame
•The pedals must be flush against the frame or removed

check-in 2 hours prior. Bicycles are subject to the sports equipment fee and exempt from any excess baggage charges relating to the weight of the bicycle.

I'd hope to carry stuff in the bike bag too…

Got some from Aldi recently and really notice the cooling effect and like the support (and flatter moobs..yeah ok). May upgrade some time. Recommended.

I was going to replace mine last weec(Hope stainless) after 12 months or so but took LBS advise to do what spock did above, leaving them within the cups and on the frame. Used Teflon grease and Finish Line wet lube. Careful with crank preload and all is well. Very slight play but good for a while yet.
Apparently you're meant to clean & lube them every few months for warranty…

I got some with a good deal on a crankset 1 1/2 yr ago.Cranks good & light still going, rings soft but ok for 8 months. BB didn't last long & so was rubbish IMO. Got Hope which have run for 14 months or so. Save your cash and time and get a decent unit.

Good for you SFB for complaining to the NS. I can see it might have intended to be funny, but as above, this is lost on me. I enjoy observational humour but this is just a stitching together of a few stereotypes. However, I don't suppose the readership will take it too seriously. They won't be choking on their polenta.

Personally, I don't ride on pavements or jump lights partly so as to be seen to be legal & considerate. Most riders I know are the same.

I avoid motor vehicles whenever possible. In April I did 2 hrs+ of technical fast off-road stuff on our local moor, no endos etc. Within 2 minutes of joining the main road through our village I was on the deck with dead bike, concussion, whiplash etc. The lady who pulled out in font of me was very nice & solcitious, & me in return. I had to calm her down a bit, but yes, it was a SMIDSY again.

Got a Xen 2010 in white after trying both. Great lid; light, perfect comfy fit & even my style-fascist teenage sons OK'd the look.
Only thing is its a bit hotter than my old Targa which I can't trust after being knocked off by a car.

So the LBS has responded helpfully, as you'd hope & expect. However does the Lapierre frame warranty apply to the original owner only?
I may want a 2nd hand one but this is a big concern. This will effect any used value a lot for current owners too.

LBS have just told me a whole new bike is advised, for safety reasons, as mdavids above.

Not sure about a claming a replacement. Guess will need to haggle with driver's insurance co.
    Any experiences out there please?

    Cheers

Strange, I just put a X-9 on (long cage, cheap fom Wiggle)and it was brilliant to set up. I did do the chain clearance first though as suggested, and chin length.

    Good luck.

Mine didn't last too long but were cheap. Also, check bolts cos granny came loose on 1st ride and bent it. No interest from Supertstar on that. I use M/burn rings now.

Hi, sorry to hear about it. I've had 3 bikes nicked, 2 really nice just sorted out like I wanted them, so I know what a knacker it is. I'm in Baildon and will share with my work riders. One of these guys actually got his bike back when they raided some tow-rag's house, so there is some hope.

    All the best.

Good know you've had a good experience, Del.
I wasn't pre-judging the DX returns support just because they are abroad but was going my the 2 problems I've had with faulty gear over a few years; but overall very positive. I always recomend DX.

Amazing! Last order I placed took 6wks plus; just in time for clocks to go back with light til 8. That & nil returns are only down side though with DX. I run a C-2 with latest Cree (from cutter) with a Hope 4.

Lots of variety off the L-L canal: Woods in Calverly, Esholt, Buck & Hirst. Skills park in Buck Woods too. Great runs down across Harden Moor into St Ives. Also through Cullingworth woods west down to Harden then up. South from Cullingworth to Haworth too.

Its not as soft as WTB but it seems a better shape for me, and lighter (though slighty more than spec). Stitching fuzzes up to look at but it still solid. Deffo recommended.

Yup, I took my mudguards off too. Though one crappy THE rear bracket snapped off anyway. I've got my Panaracer TrailBlasters on still which are great in the mud and last week too on the mainly dry moorland, rocks & roots. I am thinking going back to last autumn's Toro's soon..do all weather-tyres tempt fate?
Watch the jinx though, yeah, I had my Nokian Hakka studded ice tyres for a week before the first thaw; brilliant in snow but missed the real ice sheets that they are superb for.
Anyway, it will now rain hard because I put slug pellets around my garden.

Sudocrem works well for a lot things. Have you tried Udderly Chamois Cream(also known as minty arse cream, I'm told). Its lighter than S/crem and does a good job elsewhere. You'd think it might come under the Lubricants & Cleaning section in online web sites, but no: Body Maintenance; haha.

I has a really weird one which took ages to track down; a loud creak every crank rotation under load; tightened end bars, pedal, pivots; the lot. Started some months after I got rear wheel rebuilt at LBS with Hope ProII hub (on Marin Rock Spring frame). Turns out bearings are known to loosen just a bit; LBS stripped down, tightened and all OK.

    Fox 32 Vanilla R 140mm
OE on 2007 Marin Rock Springs bought March 2008
Used on daily West Yorks off-road commute and soem w/e/s. Wiped down every few days; rinsed off most days
Sept 08: oil appeared with wear on anodising and grooves on left stanchion.
Bought seal kit & replaced carefully, polished worn area very smoothly but oil leak problem reoccured within a month or 2 and is getting worse. Right side fine. Mojo & LBS not interested.
I wouldn’t spend more money on the fork without new stanchions. Might put these on older HT that kids use and get more reliable RS etc for FS

Re-checked link;sorry. This seems to work:

Alos, this is the excellent summary I mentioned too which includes the scientific evidence which shows that MTBing has roughly same effect on trails as walking. Recommended reading for us all!

I've got alot of Endura stuff and am pretty happy with it. My LBS All Terrain have a good range.
Got Humvee 3/4s off ebay a few years ago and still going strong. Got Thermolite bib tights in Nov and they're brill. Had to go up size: L for a 34" waist. not sure how mant washes the thigh logo will stay on for….
I wear my Convert as a gilet most days on the off-road commute and at w/e and is is wearing reasonably well. Really w/proof but still sweaty. Seam in left pocket went a while ago but didnt go back to the LBS with it as it was probaly my keys that knackered it. Front plastic zip is starting to go..
eVent 3/4 trousers work very well but the seams wore through on each buttock after only 7 months. Got a full credit from factory though and will I replace with the new PTFE Ventura 2 version. I do hope the sewing or design is better to withstand the UK grit grinding paste they should expect.
BTW, not many people & shops are aware of the EU 2 year limited warranty from the time of delivery. So from what I understand, if something breaks within 2 years and the retailer or manufacturer claim that there is only a 1 year warranty, you refer them to Article 5 of the EU Product Warranty Directive (1999). HOWEVER, it may not always be that simple. See:

There are a number of personal preducices and opinions here about the use of our shared outdoor spaces but MTBers have more in common with walkers than differences. We can point calmly to the body of scientific evidence which shows that MTBing has roughly same effect on trails as walking, and much less than horses in most cases. Personally, I avoid going out when or where I'll have too much impact and sympathised with the comment about wet, peaty trails being sensitive. I looked carefully at the factual accounts before feeling confident in riding the moors rather than just walking them as I have for decades. The CTC have a really good summary.

Also good on other aspects: The future of cycling in the countryside

Some good routes there. I'm up on Baildon Moor several times a week; part of my commute from Baildon to Salt's Mill.
Do keep an eye out for the Friends of Baildon Moor group we are setting up to represent all users of the Moor in promotion & protection.
I'll post more (sorry for the pun) in due course.

This year I've bought a lot from CRC recently with only one 1 days delay on one order. Well pleased over all.
