As many of the above posts – had it for years (don’t know if there’s any link to having grommits as a child) but have learnt to live with it. The problem generally seems to be quiet times i.e. trying to go to sleep at night and just hearing the constant ‘ringing’ high pitched whine in my case.

Having seen the forecast wondering weather ( 😉 ) it’s worth it as there’ll be 8-9 hr driving round trip.

Isn’t this old news…I rode the Minotaur (blue) months ago….

The skills zone isn’t referring to the minortaur.

Have spent the last 2weeks at cyb on hols. There is a new area up by go ape with a bit of a pump track, a couple of rocky drop-offs etc.. Was good to warm up/cool down on following the trails.

edit: last day here today 🙁 back to mountainous thetford.

The 50mm is a great lens, you can’t go wrong for the money. It can be a bit limiting on its own, but the way I see it, you can have loads of mediocre shots, or get one really good one. Just don’t drop it, it’s not the most robust

Yeah I’d read you need to treat it with kid gloves – but bang for buck seems to be one of the best out there for my level.

Alpha – I have to admit there are times that I wish we had a springer, all the ones I’ve met are absolutely bonkers and wonderful with it.

    Thanks for all the advice.

I have decided with my current level of expertise (or lack there-of), not to go for the 10-22mm as it’s a bit spendy to ‘experiment’ with especially with graded filters, so…

As stated above, have the 50mm on order, now also the ef-3 55-250 IS mkII and a hoya polarising filter.

Seems to be the way others have gone reading reviews and certainly more comfortable with the price point whilst practising.

Having looked extensively through the photos of the last year it became apparent that it was actually a lack of zoom that seemed to be lacking not necessarily a wide angle.

You may or may not be interested but just wanted to thank those above and advise the decision/mistake I eventually arrived at.

(My intention though is definitely for the 10-22 or similar in the future though 😉 )

Dig a hole and see how deep they are.

Probably best to speak to building control and ask what they want…..

Most of the time building control have their own engineers for checking calcs etc.

….. I find myself wracking my brains for a funky fore/background combo, instead of just taking nice pics….

This is of course an inevitability that I have been warned about by other photographerists.

    AlexSimon – Member

If you just want to take nice images……..then you might be better getting a couple of fast primes….

Just picked up on this comment. I actually ordered a Canon EF 50mm f1.8 Mark II which seemed relatively cheap but had good reviews on most sites I could find.

Of the two images from molgrips – it is definately the second perspective that I am after.

    AlexSimon – Member

You probably know this already, but just in case, the one think I learnt really quickly with photography is that you can throw as much money at it as you like, but there are no shortcuts to landscape photography

I wished I’d known this principle before starting mtb’ing 😉

Yeah I appreciate what you’re saying, only one lens at the moment though so would do a fair bit of comparing at the same settings and then try to experiment with the differences, if I don’t get on or not what I thought then sell up and try something else. In no rush etc.

I going to go with the (naive) mindset that I’m more likely to accidently get a nice shot than with a ‘better’ lens than a cheaper kit lens.

EDIT: actually reviewing both of molsgrips images………..I quite like both. And jads are a given obviously.

Just take six photos 2 up 3 across and stitch them in PS, instant wide instant medium format.

Actually recently got lightroom 5 so experimenting with that at the moment.

    molgrips – Member

You can use any lens for anything, you’ll just get different results. Teles are good for picking out details from landscapes but you can lose some contrast if you do.

Just want to be able to get the best (finance dependant) landscapes I can really. Just after thoughts.

……………….if you want any kind of telephone then the 10-20 is not ideal………..

This was kind of the point of my OP, should I ditch the idea of a wide angle specific and go with something with greater range like Canon ef-s 18-200 (for instance). I hadn’t even considered telephoto until this weekend’s research.

But I didn’t want to lose out on a good landscape lens just to get a bit of zoooooooooooooom (couldn’t resist).

    jad – Member
….if there was, I’d imagine image quality would be compromised a fair bit. Best teaming it up with another lens e.g. I also use a 70-200……

Pretty much this is what I was thinking, the 18-55 has been good but I’ve more often than not wanted something either above or below its range, especially when I haven’t physically been able to put myself closer/further away from the subject.

I think ( hope 😕 ) that I’ll probably always stick with a crop so wasn’t too worried about not being able to be used on a full frame.

Agreed, the price point (on the 10-22) looks pretty good and seems to have good reviews. Although if a telephoto would cope with landscape and have the benefit of zoom for stalki…….I mean wildlife does appeal.

Just wouldn’t want to lose the ‘landscape benefit’

Probably the only person to suggest this on the interwebz, but for me it would be a trek from the fuel ex range.

Ideal for xc (live near thetford so predominantly what i ride) but more than capable enough for the monthly jaunts across the border to wales…….only thing that tends to let it down is the rider i’m afraid 😉

Oh and i’m 6’4″ though i’m not sure if that really means anything.

I had additional bolts and pad locks either side on the bottom of my garage door. Inside I had a punch bag frame of 80mm square steel box section concreted into the ground and 3no. types of locks securing the bike to this frame.

Woke up one morning, locks on garage door ripped off and punch bag frame cut to pieces so they could take the bike away with the locks still attached. No-one heard a thing all night.

The only diffence from any other night was that the the first night I hadn’t parked the car tight up to the garage.

In short – if they want your bike they’re going to get it unfortunately. 🙁

EDIT: and forgot to mention that the garage door was so badly damaged it had to be replaced as well.

Sadly for you I sold mine last month!

If by any chance you live near Bristol you can have my top tube extender if you need one.

Timing has never been my strong point unfortunately. And also the opposite end of the country eastwards.

Tow bar optioned would be the peferred, however, use will be so infrequent don’t want the cost of having a tow bar installed and the carrier itself.

In my rugby playing kickboxing days had numerous ‘heat in hot water and bite down’ types.

Ultimately I went to my dentist and had one made – was an NHS dentist and cost about £40 at the time IIRC – a while ago now mind.

Can I just add that the British Standard for Levelling/Wearing screeds for domestic applications where the screed is floating (as in this case on top of the separating layer & insulation) advises a minimum screed depth of 65mm.

It also mentions about crack reinforcement – usually a steel mesh placed in the middle third of the screed, however not practical with UFH so people sometimes go for a fibre reinforced screed. Just bear in mind the reinforcement isn’t to stop cracking but to limit the crack once it has occurred if that makes sense.

You could possibly omit the sand blinding layer if you put the DPM on top of the slab although the NHBC stipulates that in this instance it would need to be a paint applied product, something Like LAC by RIW.

Also if there is an existing DPM in the floor this may well be lapped with in the perimeter walls with the DPC – if possible try to get the builder to leave some of the DPC exposed form the wall so you can link your new DPM with it (this might seem a built belt and braces but that’s what I’m like)

Also with underfloor heating it is best to have a thermally neutral floor covering tiles/carpet etc. If real wood, it may act as an insulator against the UFH meaning the system has to work harder. If you google it there are arguments for and against this principle.

Obviously all the above is hypothetical and in no way to be construed as though I know what I’m talking about in any professional capacity.

    EDIT: of the ninja variety

Being a fan of Trek Bikes (apologies for the foul language 😳 ), I’ve always had to pick up bikes I’ve bought.

Furthest – 550mile round trip to Wheelies in South Wales – for certain reasons had to pick up and turn around and come straight back not chance to test in the local vicinity.

Jeff buckleys version of hallelujah – think as with cash and NIN, leonard cohen has gone record saying buckleys version is better (but i’ll stand corrected on that). First time i ever heard it was radio 1 playing it on the fiirst anniversary of 9/11 – sat in car park to listen to it in its entirety, then went straight to andys records to buy the album.
