When are we starting on the original, unedited question then? Maybe that should be a separate thread…

I fear that the time may have come to give up on this one.

    Why?
You have a dog that is male and a dog that is male or female.
In the 1/3rd scenario there is a female dog which doesn’t exist in the question. There is no female dog. There is a male dog, and a dog that is either male or female.

For the sake of the explanation, let’s say the dogs are called Rover and Spot.

From the information we have, we know that Rover and Spot are not both female. They could both be male or they could be a male and a female.

    Three possibilities therefore exist:

    1) Rover male, Spot female

    2) Rover female, Spot male

    3) Rover male, Spot male.

Assuming a random dog has a 50/50 chance of being male or female, that means the three possibilities are each equally likely to be the true position, ergo the probability of it being option 3 is 1 in 3.

aaaargh! The ‘maths answer’ is the real world logical answer! Never play poker for money.
played last night and won £25 actually!
I say real world and maths answer, but to me, if i am physically presented with these two dogs and am told one is a boy and the other is unknown i only need to physically check one of them to find out what sex both of them are…

So if you check one and it is a boy, what sex is the other one?

The question can be encapsulated thus:

If you have two dogs and you know that they are not both female, what is the probability of them both being male?

    The answer is 1/3.

I use the Bill Grainger method and have passed it on to many over the years.

Scruff above describes a very similar method.

Break the eggs into a non stick frying pan with 1 to 2 inches of just boiling water in. I do add a splash of white wine vinegar.

As the water comes back to the boil the eggs will  naturally come away from the bottom of the pan with the bubbles. You can help them along with a fish slice.

Baste the tops with some water as they cook if necessary.

Cooking time is usually exactly the same as it takes for the toast to cook and have a bit of butter applied to it.

As above, go for Charles Tyrrwhitt. They can accommodate pretty much any sizes. I have the opposite problem – 15.5″ collar, extra slim fit, 36 inch sleeves.

Their shirts can appear a bit expensive but if you get on the mailing list there are always discounts and sales. 4 shirts for £100 is about par for the course.

    It’s a road bike.

I have hired over there before but on this occasion I’ll be doing the Mallorca 312 so about 195 miles in a day. Because of that I’ve decided I’d be better off having my own bike.

Sounds like a Golf type car should do the trick.

I do find a cold pint of Guinness slips down quite nicely at 6am.

For road jerseys Castelli, Sportful and La Passione are all plenty long enough in the body for me at 6’4″, size large. DHB and Rapha come up shorter.

Corvara in the Dolomites. An absolute gem of a place for an active trip. Hotel Panorama is highly recommended.

    1. Fred Whitton in May. Sensational weather for the second year running.

    2. Solo Coast to Coast in a day in June.

    3. A fantastic day in the Dolomites on a lovely hired Cervelo doing some classic cols including the Pordoi and Fedaia.

I’m doing the Mallorca 312 but think it’s sold out now.

Maratona des Dolomites would be fantastic if you can get a place.

If you suffer with cold feet and you’re considering the Northwaves, definitely go for the Arctic ones.

How did you get on with the Galibier gilet Woodster?

Particularly interested to hear about the fit and packability.

Booze seems to make a huge difference to mine, sometimes raising it by 20 or so.

Good evidence (if any was really needed) that it doesn’t do you much good!

Sella Ronda can be done in a day but no reason you can’t do it twice in opposite directions as you’ll then be using all different lifts and riding different trails for the most part.

Thinking further about the Coast and Castles, there is a variation of the route inland from Berwick up the Tweed. So they could do a circuit from Berwick using that route first to Edinburgh and then back along the coastal route.

Have you considered the Dolomites? Stunning mountains. Loads of good quality refuges.

Check out the Sella Ronda, a famous MTB tour where you can use the various lifts and gondolas to get you up and then ride down.

Have a look at the Coast and Castles route. Newcastle to Edinburgh but no need to do the full thing.

You can ride the route and get the train back to the start.

Some sections are off road but nothing too difficult. Should be plenty of campsites along that coast too.

It’s only partly in Scotland though of course.

Not surprised TBH. Pretty shocking conditions here.

Of all the Garmin devices I’ve tried the Vivoactive HR seems the most bombproof and lacking in any obvious problems or flaws.

That said, when I had a problem with another device (Edge 520) Garmin were superb, sending me a replacement even though it was out of warranty.

Yep, signed up for the long route.

Going to try it on my hardtail 29er. I’ve got a cross bike too but the MTB is pretty new so looking forward to getting it out for a proper blast.

Managed 40 miles on it the other day in and around Hamsterley which was about 90% off road so hopefully it won’t feel too much longer. Not expecting to break any records though…

You need to size well up in the Northwaves. I’m normally size 11 but ended up with size 47 which they class as UK 12.5. Last thing you want with winter boots is them being too tight.

I’ve stayed at Torlinnhe House twice before and would recommend it.

It’s about a mile along the loch from Fort William centre so walkable although the owner bloke will also give you a lift into town if you ask him. Clean, well appointed rooms and excellent breakfasts.

If you want somewhere at Spean Bridge then Tirindrish House is also good.

My parents did that with our Jack Russells while touring round Scotland. You do need to the them in though to prevent them jumping out!
