debit card is as good as cash so bad news you have lost it

Not true. You can do a chargeback on a Visa debit card. See the link below.

The webpage the question was asked on is here. It was asked on the 3rd so it must have been in the 7th November paper as it's not in the edition from the 14th as I still have this. The recycling went last Thursday so I no longer have the earlier edition. Try contacting the Guardian and see if you can get a copy from them.

Barry White, yes THAT Barry White – the walrus of love.

He was a session drummer before turning to singing – played on I Fought The Law by The Bobby Fuller Four amongst others.

You have passed the practice citizenship test.

Questions answered correctly: 18 out of 24 (75%)

Time taken: 04 minutes 24 seconds

Does that mean I am now a citizen and no longer a subject?

Is this some sort of Mayo/Kermode 'change one letter in a film title' thread??? Cos if it is that's a good one – but odd has two D's :-)

If we're wandering off the beaten track then it's time for a bit of hair metal. Love this bands first album – still listen to it 20+ years later. Saw them supporting Guns n Roses at Rock City in Nottinghem – best gig I've ever been to.

Mr_C i was refering to the millions of "Tainted love" covers, not the best cover in general, but it's still a goodun

    Fair enough.

There was a great documentary on BBC4 the other night – Synth Brittannia – all about the post punk synth-pop era. Still on Iplayer – well worth a watch.

    WTF is that about.

    Prefer Bill Bailey's version:

Those Morrisons self scan checkouts are a nightmare. As the OP said half the stuff doesn't scan, the weights in the system are wrong as so many items throw up unexpected item in bagging area, and within 3 nanoseconds of scanning an item the damn thing is demanding you put it in the bag – give me a ****' chance.

really? Or are you just trying to convince yourself?

I'd be the first to complain if an OS upgrade caused problems. I'm no Apple fanboy but compared to the OS 'upgrades' I had to endure when using Windows Mobile on an Ipaq, using and upgrading the OS on my Ipod is a dream.

The only time I notice any slow down is if I am using the Ipod when it connects to Wifi and starts downloading email in the background, but this is very brief and the system picks up again very quickly – I have never experienced my Ipod coming to a "near halt" as described earlier.

The current 8Gb Touch is stil a 2G device. Only the 32Gb and 64Gb have the new 3G hardware. See here.

The 2G ipod touch can neither be jailbroke nor run at version 3 without grinding to a near halt.

I have a 1G 32Gb Touch running version 3 and it is no slower than when it was running previous versions of the OS.

What Househusband said. They're quite pricey and can take a bit of setting up, but once done you can stick all the other remotes away and forget about them.

I've tried different models of the One-For-All type, but I always found you needed to keep the original remote to hand as there was always at least one thing they couldn't do.

Spanish Steps by Tim Moore is one of the funniest books I've read, his best IMHO.

Not read any Peter Moore, is it similar sort of stuff? Will have a look on readitswapit.

Been to the BMF show in Spring a couple of times, as you say bargains to be had.

Frank Thomas 'waterproof' kit is alright as long as you don't go out when it's raining, as I have found to my cost.

Sounds like they have changed the display resolution.

Right click on an empty part of the desktop and select Properties

Click on the settings tab and use the Screen resolution slider to select a different resolution until you get to one which looks correct.

look under distance selling, you have a 7 day cooling off period.

Only any use if the retailer actually refunds the payment, which in this case they don't seem willing to do.

If you paid by Visa, whether debit or credit card, you can still get a chargeback for the amount paid and the rule which says the payment has to be over £100 does not apply but the banks do seem to be resistant to this, who'd have thought it – banks trying not to pay money out. See here for more info.

I've had a 2.2 diesel Civic for 18 months now and I am counting the day until I get rid in another 18 months.

Fuel consumption is the main issue – no matter how I drive, it barely gets above 40 mpg. People have told me it will get better with age. I have now done about 40k and have seen no improvement – if I drive like an OAP I can sometimes get up as high as 45 mpg. The Octavia I had prior to this driven in a similar manner would give about 70 mpg.

And the Skoda is probably the biggest issue I have with the Civic – in comparison to the Octavia everything about the Civic is slightly wrong – the turning circle is akin to that of a bus, the 4th 5th and 6th gears are too close in ratio, the sat-nav was 2 years out of date when I got it and they want £195 to update it, the computer gives less useful information, the cheapo plastic petrol filler cover, folding mirrors which don't fold when you lock the car only when you press the button inside. I could go on. Most of the issues are minor niggles but when you have to live with it everyday they build up to a major annoyance.

The only reason I didn't get another Octavia was because of the less than helpful main dealers close to me. I probably won't let this stop me next time.

Get the Jetta if it suits but definitely look at the Skoda and avoid the Civic.

Used to have a number which was one digit off one of the local taxi firms. Same as bassspine's dad – started off telling the (usually drunk) idiots they'd got the wrong number then thought it would be more fun taking the details telling them to wait outside and the taxi would be there in 15 minutes. Eventually got the number changed – there are only so many drunks you can tolerate at 2am.

looking for a cheap commuter that could do a bit of touring. Any ideas?

Suzuki SV650S – I used to commute every day on one and went touring two up to Spain and back and round the UK. Fantastic first bike – always brought a smile to my face whenever I rode it. Replaced my first one with a Honda Hornet, absolutely hated it and sold it after 3 months and went and bought another SV. The people at http://forums.sv650.org/%5B/url%5D are very friendly and will point you in the right direction.

Oh, and congrats on passing your test.

Boardinbob – what with the 'Nam pictures subliminally flicking into the strange looking dog video?

    The dog's having flashbacks.

Not a funny site but I always find the Boston Globes Big Picture[/url] fascinating – take a look through the archives, there's some fantastic photojournalism in there.
