The worry is how long that rear mech is going to last while ploughing through the snow..

Yep, the research is questionable in bike choice…

Moonlander with studded BFL tyres will ride a lot easier than freakbike 8O, rememering of course, she is towing her gear on a sled is she not? I just cant see how those dumpy tyres will work?

She should have bought my fat bike that is for sale atm..

They’re not that good in actual slick mud

    *disagrees*

Should add, the new surly tyres were not available in this country when the ST review was written. I shipped mine in from the states at about the same time….they are a mud revelation

Or if you feel the need to be ultra niche, I give you…

    I’m getting one when i’m fat(er) & old(er)

The bike in the ST review did not really have the correct tyres for the conditions they were testing the bike in.
If it had a set of these on, then i’m sure the review would have been written very differently..

Doubt they would criticise the way they ride in mud with a set of those

If your referring to the belt drive pic, I’m not sure, but I think it is a DMR singlespeed 135mm hub, laced to an offset 80mm flattop rim.

I have the same hub on the front of my bike & it looks pretty similar.

That bike is one of the 907 proto’s. One was being run S/S, the other with Alfine over the winter from their shop in Alaska. Some changes are being made & forst production run is early summer.

I also believe that Fatback is working with belt drive also.

Mud, grit & sh1te, all reasons why I would like to try out a belt drive.

But, given all the potential problems, limited frames & not being able to run 100mm rims with any of the current options, I have to ask my self are belts worth the hassle?

Moonlander with Alfine & chain ticks all my boxes at the moment, after reading about the On One earlier  :P

    Now, that’s more like it!!

Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Already have complete fatty with 80’s…so nothing for me here…

So, lets get this thread back OT…bikes that will work with belt drives & Alfine

Never mind snow, it it maintenance free, up to the axles in sh1te crawler i’m looking for.

If the belt line would work & be able to get low enough ratios with the alfine, it would be a good combo for this winter slop

Or conditions like these.. (Pics from MTBR)

Those dropouts are on-one swap outs, but the horizontal swap outs don’t fit.

So…. Is this another FB that needs an eccentric BB or tensioner to work an Alfine?

WTF is the rear hub spacing, I thought it was 135mm?

Finally, will a 100mm rim & BFL fit in the rear & still run 2×9 gearing.

I’m sensing while there is a lot of hype around this bike, it is falling short on the things we would like to see on a freshly designed bike?

Going back to that picture of the fat cargo bike…. Just want you all to know that I will be liasing with surly over single malt in January and will continue my campaign for a 29er fat bike, and 29er fat cargo bike

That is what I need right there.

I am trying to sort out a fat cargo bike build right now, but best I can get so far is a V4 Mundo frameset, where fatties might work on trials rims, but I’m not sure about the potential chainline issues.

If Surly could come up with a fat option for the dummy, or a custom build solution, they could have my money right now

I have cable clips like that on my Ragley Blupig. Bags of clips can be sourced from hotlines IIRC.

Every fatbike needs the three eyed monster water bottle :D

The 907 is really stable with the wee man on the back

Big tyres, low pressure making for a comfortable ride for my passenger ;)

That is really good info, thanks very much.

    To summarise my needs –

Does not need to carry massive weight or adults.
Short distance trips to the shops. Bulky, but light most of the time.
Carrying kids around town & family friendly trails & paths
    Light bivi touring

This is my thinking behind the Ute at the moment :-)

The Ute is top of my shopping list – everything I need at a sensible price & light enough to double a short tourer, but I was looking as a Rock Lobster as a donor bike for xtracycle kit just a few weeks ago.

I need bus mode, so what seats are you using on the Ute’s? How does it ride with a wee one on the back, better that normal bike?

one reason they still fetch good money is because they are one of the few forks that can run a fat tyre.
