Only a few days ago I was hearing about more cracking issues with the main gearbox on S92, which we use in Norway.

Looking at CHC flight schedule, it may have been a flight to Brae. Not confirmed though.

Actually very happy where I am in NE Scotland.

I have the beach on my doorstep & the Cairngorms are less than 1hr away, with lots of nice riding inbetween

Good point by pinetree – it does really depend on what you want to use the bike for & where it will be ridden. & how much room you have to store it.

I have just built a fat mundo for cruising about locally with the kids, going shopping & adventures to the woods & beach with the wee ones. They are fantastic!!
The mundo is a really stable bike & it handle lots of weight really well.

I have just fitted a front rack, but I don’t have any pics yet.

    Excellent post Andy.

I like the photos & effects myself – what camera is that?
Wouldn’t mind doing some winter bikepacking this year, but I will need a warmer sleeping bag first!

While we are at it, has anyone used a set of bar pogies / bar mits? My hands get **** freezing in winter, currently pondering options for snow riding :?:

Sounds like you need kayak gear, not bike gear :D

How have they been holding up? I have an opinion it is going to be another cold winter & seemed a good boot to use on the fatty, esp when night riding & things dip in to double – temps…

I ride with a set of five ten canyoneer 2 boots & waterproof socks for most of the year in typical wet conditions.

However, when things turn really cold, I have just bought a set of these Karrimor snow boots. Look really good quality & only £35.

Edit – those 5/10 exum guides look 8)

It is above Scourie on the North side of the village if you are ever up that way. 2013 Summer moray fatbike trip anyone? 8)

Locally, Dallas has some interesting loch riding 8O

Any bike with a Nate tyre & wide rim combo would work for you in mixed bog / gritstone. As big & grippy as they are, even they have limits 8O

Fresh out the box next to a HR.

    Last winter…

They will ride bog within reason, again depends on how soft the going is…

I see your point 8) , but I can have just the same fun & ride 95% the conditions on my “small” 42mm rims as I can on my 80mm.

The both work fine, but I would still be running the narrower rims if I were riding hills & rocks most of the time, rather than sand & pebbles.

Why do you think 47mm rims are a mistake for trail riding….just curious, that’s all?

I would say they are the perfect balance between weight & float if you are not going to be riding conditions require ultimate float as a major consideration.

I personally find my 80’s to be OTT when riding around Swavis’s neck of the woods. The riding is still fun, but I would rather be lugging a lighter wheel uphill on a regular basis, esp when wearing a set of nates…

Sandman seem to do areet on their 47mm set up

YoKaiser – If the beach is now & again, 80mm will be perfect all rounder. If you local conditions are really soft, or you think you might be riding the coast on a more regular basis, the 100mm may suit better. It depends on what your riding is mainly going to involve condition wise.

But they do make a fork -just use a pugsley 100mm spaced, non offset fork & you can run any front hub you want.

That is good news about the 9zero7 frames & parts being available this side of the pond Tim.
Please order up some hangers for the 2011 frames, I only have 1 spare left now – they are fairly weak

Swavis – Is your work just an extension of the bike shed? :-)

Fattys are easy to transport on the roof, I use an old rear wheel for mounting onto any rack. Simples.

When fitting Mrs Motorman’s Winter wheels today, I found one of them had a nail sticking out, so with the garage just down the road & nice afternoon, it would be rude not to 8O

Mostly fun, but also practical

Swavis – Aye, that pic was taken from the singletrack path above the Gully Monster. Nice rooty climb to test the nates on.

They are good in mud, but only since the Nate tyre was introduced last year. Prior to that they were pretty pants.

Best aspect for me about a fatbike, is the ability to ride anywhere, any time of the year & as the conditions get worse, the more fun it becomes.

But also rather good for chilling out at the end of the day 8)

There are Pugsleys and Black Ops. What’s best for a fat knacker who will mainly use it on snow but with the occasional beach ride?

As CK says, can’t really go wrong with Black Ops IMO. Also remember that the on one bikes should be out pretty soon

Anyone know of demo medium fat bikes up for sale?

I keep toying with selling mine, to fund another build (19″). I’m in Lossie if you ever want to try one.

Swavis – I have had 2x gigapipe & 2x FSA Platinum BBs on my bike. I have found that the gigapipe is the better of the two, as it can be serviced for around £24.
The FSA platinum cannot be repaired, as the bearing races are integral with the shell. It also only has 2 bearings, where the Gigapipe uses 4.

Replace the 4x 7mm bearings with 2 of these –

    ISIS Bearings

Top tip – strip down the BB before fitting & pack out the bearings with quality grease – this is usually why they fail early.

    Swavis,

Didn’t take long to convince you eh?

If you can build up with 36H, here is a much cheaper option than the surly rims for the front, or with some mods for the rear

    Fat rims

If it is a do-it-all wheel you can’t go wrong with 80’s. Mine have been through everything from tidal mud at Findhorn to the top of Speyside’s finest. 100mm rims are too wide for general riding, very specific to ultra soft condition riding, where float is paramount.
One thing to remember – 80mm rims might be a bit fragile for bombing down the side of conval & the likes – double wall marges might serve you better?

If you find any fatty gear in the States you need, let me know, as I can get it hand carried over

    Stevious,

I have taken the kids out on a fatbike before & it work because –

    1. Much nicer ride for the wee ones, basically sitting on a big cushion of air smoothing out the ride.
    2. Make riding across grass etc so much easier
    3. I live on the coast, so it allows us to travel along the beach

Oh, most important, it is fun! Thats what bikes are supposed to be about, right 8) I also have some camping trips lined up with this bike.

    @ Lardman

I am waiting for yuba spacer for alfine & nuvinci to arrive from the states before I start the Mk2 rear wheel.

I am running the standard wheel at the moment, but I was thinking I would need a long tension to clear the stand. Thanks for info.

Lots of the fuds on here don’t like fatbikes any ways.

    Motorman like this.

More fuds in here than the orchard towers, Singapore…

Anyway, I ride a clownbike with some numbers on the side, 907 I think? It is rather good when it is not broken.
