It is a case of right tool for the right job for offroad riding…

If I want to ride a trail centre I use my Ragley Bluepig

If I want to ride regular XC trails I use my Trek EX8

If I want to ride from my door I use a fatbike becauseI live right on the coast.
Most of the trails around be are really sandy, even in the forest singletrack. Owning a full fat means that I can ride where I have to push the other bikes. This also applies to really soft & boggy conditions

Out of all my bikes, the fatbike is the one I use most & have the most fun on, even if it takes a little bit more effort to get uphill.

The also make an awesome offroad touring bike!

And you can take them up some really big hills!

Full fatbikes are not the best thing to climb, thats for sure..I know I have one! weights range from 35-40 lbs average I would say & most of the extra mass is in the wheels & tyres.
If you have a good reason to own a fatbike, you soon forget about the wee bit extra weight for all the benefits the extra float & traction provide.

I’m waiting for my Nate(rear) & Big Fat Larry (front) to arrive from alaska for my winter setup.

Yeah, hahaha…but you really need to see where I go riding & it would all make sense!
I use them on my fatbike for winter beachriding, ford / river crossings & general bog fests….

I use five ten canyoneer 2 boots….they have stealth rubber & totally waterproof & just a wee bit special needs…
Also hear that the keen boots are pretty good too

Sounds good. I was planning swinging right out of the car park & heading to the Ben first, not climbing up to Ptarmigan, but I would imagine that path is also fairly similar in condition (hopefully)

I’m anti-social & ride alone 7 days a week  I can somehow find the time to stop, enjoy the view & rehydrate….life is not a race 8O
    Just sayin….

What’s wrong with using bottles, either on bike or in rucksack these days

    I’ve done this…Trek Alu bolts are sh1te

I replaced mine with regular SS capbolts which work just fine. I want strength at my suspension connection points, not chocolate bolts.

I use Purple Extreme dry lube for sand / beach riding…..excellent stuff. Once applied correctly, does not attract dirt & quick hose off at end of ride is all that is required.

Gears are good for sand riding, esp some nice low ratios for dune riding. I use 22/32 front and 12/36 rear. Depends on your terrain & how loose the sand is you are riding.

I found fatbikes.com very good with my 9zero7. I did have a few issues during the build, but they were really good with customer service & sorted everything out.

Real men look like that do they  Im sure they were enjoying every minute of that…..

I just put all my other gear on the bike & put the banshee tent in a small rucksack.

Alex, why don’t you just take your bike to the nearest beach & try it yourself.
    Where you moving too?

I have just got a Vango Banshee 200 today & it is 2kg. Yer fine, once your rolling you will never notice it.
I will take the wee bit extra weight than fannying around with tarps, bags & trying to make on your Ray Mears 8O
BTW, really impressed with Vango tents, nice gear.

Depends on sand. One of the beaches round me is firm enough for regular tyres, but cross the river & your going nowhere. You just going to have experiment :-)

But if it is loose, dry sand…wat cynic-al said :?

You need to buy a fatbike or get another hobby :?

I live next to the beach, nothing comes close to the float of a 4″ tyre, the Panaracer Fire FR 2.4″ I was using before, were useless in soft / dry sand.
If this is not an option for you, whatever tyres you choose, get as wide as possible & with as little pressure as possible…..Have fun! :-)

Wasn’t too bad until I came across this hole, then it turned into a swamp-fest! See what you mean, but no, just a case of wrong gear to get out the other side..
Really heavy rain last week, was going to take EX8, but glad I opted for fat, trails i was on were pretty boggy in parts

Purple extreme …end of. Expensive, but best lube money can buy. Good for 24hr races to beachriding & everything in-between….

Ergon’s may look “special needs” but really comfy for all day rides – I use them on my fatbike which is special needs anyway…
    Are pricey tho

Bontrager make a real nice thick one, i have then on 3 bikes, including my touring bike with bar ends, just need to cut the end cap off. I like them.

    Thick grips

Was out with these tonight, perfect, really comfortable & actually grip pedals better than my impacts.
Given that I ride a fatbike on the beach/bog & not shy to river crossings I think these will do just fine during the winter when paired to sealskinz socks….
I found some keen boots just after I bought mine & I thought they were very good. They are no the “to get” list now…

Ok, purchased these today, could be the ultimate winter/wet condition flat pedal boot, totally waterproof & stealth rubber soles…. :-)

    Five ten canyon boots

First impressions really good, got a big ride tomorrow, so good change to test them as it is really wet up here

Really drifty & good fun tho, not complaining

Are waterproof socks the key here? How do they feel when the boots are soaking, never used then before? My old boots are really comfy & grippy, just the waterproofing letting them down. Have tried proofing them, but still not good enough for long wet rides.
Pedals have extra long pins for working with boots, so good with that one.

Serious question – would there be interest in hiring fatbikes if they were available?
Been thinking of taking a few more over for touring holiday rentals in Scotland, but not sure if there is the market for it?

    Yes I have one

9zero7, import from Alaska, running 80mm rims, 2×9 spec’ed for beach riding, 12/36 on rear

Fast becoming my favourite bike out of the 5 I own. Great fun bike to have, comfortable & goes everywhere from bog to beach.

Interesting mix of replies, some of you have interesting views thats for sure.
Our dog has been continually trained since we got him, he is generally very good, but still being very young he does get excited when meeting other dog when on lead, just wanting to play.
As my wife is pregnant, I made the comment about controlling the pulling a little better to save him pulling her.
Whatever you view, hitting a dog is never going to get the correct results when training.

You just don’t expect your dog to get booted in the ribs by some **** crazy old woman when you go to pick him up.

Another option is to ship the bike in 2 boxes, shipped as “parts”
This is what 9zero7 did with my new fatbike, rather than sending out as complete bike.
$180 for international shipping & £295 for Import tax & VAT when it arrived.
