Tempo, who mentioned tempo, I was balls out up titans Grove, thought P Bayles was catching me at one point.

Yes, picking matching kit would be a good idea for next one. Start was very confusing as we seemed to be caught up in a big group.

Context is important, as are realistic paces.
I use “race pace” in the context of the distance you’re aiming at. So if you want to do a 4 hour marathon then I would be doing all my running at a minimum of 9 minute mile as that’s roughly the pace I need to run to hut the goal.
What I don’t see the point of, using the above example, is doing my long runs at 10 minute miles.

So you would run your long runs at target marathon pace? Everyone is different but if I tried to do this I would end up injured.

+1 for Stone Roses, did they tour when Fools Gold came out at the end of 1989? Would have liked to see them in a decent venue then rather than Spike Island.

No idea if this was after Fools Gold but went to see a local band International Resque at the Majestic in Reading sometime in 89, they were supporting some band I had never heard of called the Stone Roses. Loved them ever since.

Trip sounds fantastic. At pretty much this precise moment last year we were setting off heading south on PCH from Los Altos heading down to LA. My 7 and year old loved the whole road trip, highlights for her were all in LA rather than SF, she particularly enjoyed cycling in Santa Monica/Venice and Hollywood, seeing the sign and boulevard. My 3 year old just remembers Disneyland.

If possible I would try and take 2 days to drive PCH as there are lots of great beaches etc to stop off on route and Monterey to Santa Cruz could depending on traffic be a long day in the car for younger children.

I would try and avoid driving in LA during rush hour, as someone who has live din London for nearly 30 years I presumed LA traffic couldn’t be any worse, oh how wrong I was. Took 4 hours from Santa Monica to Anaheim, same trip outside of rush hour took an hour.

Definitely worth exploring north of SF if you have the time.

    Enjoy.

Raced the 4 Horsemen today, 55 miles with 7000ft climbing. Not a course I am suited to, got into a decent group from start that pretty much held until Radio tower climb, lost a few places up the Alp, clawed a few back coming out of jungle. Ended up 4th in C on ZP, took 3:30 with an NP of 229, good workout, feeling it now, time for rugby and beer.

For sections marked as free ride within a structured workout the workout should automatically disable erg mode and then re-engage erg mode for the next section that has a specified Watts.

Is this on one specific workout?

Maybe you could create your own custom workout in Zwift with a free ride section and see if you still experience same behaviour.

@snotrag try changing to a harder gear you will see you will be putting out more watts at 65rpm.

When not in erg mode you need to use gears to vary your power:cadence.

If it was like real life, it’d just be done on results no?

Outside of the pro ranks isn’t real-life racing category based albeit on previous results rather than W/Kg

I am also a fan of the split cat set off times as lets face it despite it being ‘only a game’ it is much more fun to at least be in with a chance of ‘winning’ than coming 3/4 of the way down the field.

@scaredypants yes that lead in was hectic today, that is normally a 2 lap race, tonight was first time with single lap.

Due to faster than normal start I failed to keep with lead Cs off the line, managed to hide in 2nd group along embankment and eventually bridged to lead group. Had about 12 of us in front group, up the mall one chap attacked and got 4 seconds on the bunch, he was regularly putting in >6w/kg effort. A combined effort by the group reeled him in but as soon as we did he kicked again and disappeared into the distance, at that point we let him go. So 6 of us together under the 1k to go banner, decided no matter what I wouldn’t attempt sprint until green line, was back of group by said line but managed to get 3rd in our group, 4th overall, silver on ZP. The ‘winner’ on the road averaged >5w/kg, good going for a C🤗

Another round of WKG winter league tonight, 2 laps of Yorkshire UCI, too hilly for me, will be happy with a top 15.

Wkg round 5 today, 111km race, 12 laps of Watopia hilly reverse. Never want to see that hill again, took me 3:20, from lap 5 onwards I struggled on KOM dropping back through the field. Settled in with a group of 6 for last 4 laps. On last lap I hit the KOM with all I had left, ended up being my quickest ascent of the day, averaged nearly 300W for 5 minutes and took a minute out of rest of group, in hindsight seems slightly pointless that much effort for 13th place.

Mini Crit – 2 laps London Classique. Individual cat starts for this one, normal hectic start then it settled right down, In lead group 30+ Cs, along the embankment we were cruising at a very modest 220W. lost a few off the back on climb up to Trafalgar sq, pace then picked up a bit and after the Whitehall rise on lap 1 we were down to under 20, on last lap we got overtaken by leading Bs only 3 of us managed to latch onto the B group. Got distanced along with another C on last climb, managed to grab a wheel and got towed back, going under 1km banner 8 of us together including my 2 rival C riders. Managed to stay with group on final straight along with one other C , had no sprint so finished 2nd C on road, 1st on ZP. 3.3W/Kg which may make by best 3 average over 3.2,

Yesterday did 110km in gale force winds and driving rain, nearly 5 miserable hours that felt like 10. Housebound with my 4 year old this morning, did an hours group ride on Zwift, 3 laps volcano flat, time flew by.

    Every day is different.

Woodster they are marked red because in that table your height and weight are the lowest, highest is also marked, see the chap at 109kg and 196cm. It doesn’t mean Zwift doesn’t believe you 😀

I calibrate my Kickr in Zwift about once a week having first warmed it up for 10 minutes, no need to also do in the Wahoo app.

My Assioma pedals I calibrate from my garmin edge before each use.

Strangely the behaviour Badlywireddog mentions I have only seen from the Wahoo app not from Zwift. Gen 2 Kickr

WKG round 2 today on the Watopia big loop including the Epic KOM so really not ideal for me. Usual frantic start and I settled in with the 2nd group of C riders, onto the climb and the group split, i just did my own thing and was pleased to arrive at the top in 23rd. Solo on the descent, going towards climb to jungle I had a group of 4 about 15 seconds ahead so I tried to reel them in, finally caught them on the jungle descent, we kept picking up stragglers around jungle loop and by the time we finished the jungle we were a group of 12. One rider kicked going from Italian village towards Volcano he quickly pulled out 4 seconds, I made the move to join him and pulled the group with me. In the volcano someone got a 2 second gap, I put in a 400W effort, caught and past him, minimal reaction from the group so I kept going by the end of the tunnel I had 15 seconds on the group with 1/2 a mile to go, cruised to the line for 8th C. Happy with that result on this course, ap of 251W for 1:25.

Weighed myself this morning and I am 2kg under my Zwift/Strava weight. My best ever ZP watts was 91 days ago so this has now dropped from my profile so even if I adjusted settings I would be Under 3.1W/Kg so well within C limits.

Cannot be bothered to adjust weight on all the platforms though as I am in Croatia next week for a mate’s birthday so five days of excess beer and food will no doubt bring IRL weight pretty close to Zwift settings.

Had a couple of hours outside on bike yesterday, will probably jump on one of the busier races between 5-7 tonight.

Yep, I tried a couple of B races to see how I would get on. First sign of any hill and I am down to a solo TT, managed ok for 1st 20 minutes on flat but after that started to drop off the pace, no fun. From memory only bothered to finish 1 of the 4 B races I tried.

I’m currently at 3.17 W/Kg on ZP, think I am now a couple of Kg lighter than my Zwift weight. Not going to update weight until/if I get bumped to B, is that cheating?

I did Liverpool in 2017, they run a 10k, half and full on same day. Fairly standard city course, a couple of longish drags but nothing too steep, the final 4 miles along the river are not the most pleasant end to a Marathon, pretty straight, no support and it seems to go on forever, the headwind didn’t help. Bit of a mixed bag support wise, the actual town centre and some of the parks had good support, other parts not so much.

From memory there were less than 3000 runners doing the full. Overall I enjoyed it and would run it again.

WKG series round 1 today, TT on the Bologna course, 270W only good enough for 23rd in C

If it rains as forecast tomorrow will be looking for a 2-3 hour ride on Zwift.

KISS race this morning, a lap of Watopia Waistband, pretty big field. As usual a rapid start, couldn’t hang onto the fast gang so settled in with some faster C and slower B riders. As the kicks came we slowly lost more from the group, on the kick into the volcano I nearly lost contact but managed to power back to the group on the flat, by this time we are down to 9. The sprint wound up with .3m to go, don’t have much of a sprint at the best of times, dropped 2 seconds to top 3 in the sprint but came home 4/9 of the group. Turned out 1 C was up the road with the fast B riders, after ZP did it’s stuff ended up in Bronze for a relatively low 241W.

Legs were tired today, think I am on 33 consecutive days of cycling or running, couple of easy days/rest coming up.

Also would have thought that on flat TT course Watts would be king. Was TT bike enforced or could some of the lower Watts riders have been non TT bike and drafting?

First IRL ride for 2 months yesterday, 70 miles on the road, ploughed through lots of floods and incorporated 3 climbs up the Ridgeway; Tom’s, Bison and Ivinghoe beacon.

Legs a bit heavy today but may do a short race if I can find one that suits.

So 4 silvers today all in C

First outdoor ride since broken collarbone planned for Sunday but would potentially be up for some Zwift on Saturday, another vote for a flat one.

Nice write up Weeksy, I enjoyed that, was clinging on until the end, thanks for the lead out :). I may be getting a dq as I seem to have gone over cat limit.

I am still recovering from a broken collarbone so have also lowered my ftp setting a bit. Prior to break I was bordering on a bump up to B, hoping to hold off being chucked into B as I only get decent results in C over the flatter short stages. Have previously tried a few B races and just end up getting shelled out the back on the slightest incline and then riding solo. Guess losing some wait would help with that?

My OH did similar a couple of months ago, like you she had paid but too late, phoned them up and they cancelled the charge but they said she still had 2 pay for the 2 crossings in order to clear the PCN, the money she had already paid got marked down as credit against her next two crossings.

After a couple of weeks off the bike due to having my collarbone pinned back together Doc has said I can do some gentle indoor cycling.

Rather than just ride along slowly I lowered my ftp numbers by 30% and did one of the ZA workouts using the new Yorkshire course.

Nice to be back on the bike, prior to break was getting very close to an enforced upgrade to B, looking forward to building the fitness up again once fully mended.

My 3 year old is on his 3rd pair this year, seem to last my 8 year old about 6-8 months, do get worn a lot though. As for 50 year old me I currently have 4 pairs, oldest of which must be 3 years old.

Tbh not noticed any drop in quality since I got my 1st pair in 84

Did the Giro TT this morning 90kg up the hill was never going to be easy. Did the flat section in 9 minutes at 105% FTP , similar power for final 1.2 miles which took me 11 minutes. Think I lost >100 places on the climb. Good workout though. 21:47 total, anyone else had a bash?

Cycle around in London (the obvious centre of the world) and the most common bike is the Brompton by a long way. You’ll always see one somewhere

My money would be on Boris Bikes
