You wake up next to someone, & even though you’ve forgotten their name they still look OK.

    An underwater porta-potty?

DAB’s a UK-only standard and heavy on power consumption (so short battery life) so there isn’t a global demand. That’s why the big names aren’t interested and prices are relatively high.

There’s little you can do, except not do whatever you were fired for from the previous job. Which might have been, being too cocky by half.
If it’s repeating business then they will want to keep you for the next years’ sales. However, don’t slag off your previous employer to customers, or they will wonder why you worked for them in the first place.

+1 for trying many pairs on.
The Meindl fit me, as do Lowa; but Asolos and others are just painfully narrow. So try, try try.

I’ve not heard of Anotom before, I’ll have a look. Ta.

I believe that Ford Connect Transits have a flat floor & the passenger seat folds down so that 4’x 8′ boards can fit inside. Worth checking, I reckon.

I’ve spent a fair few weekends in DC, (the Garden Hilton is quite cheap at weekends) and there ain’t much to do apart from look at museums. The art is good, admittedly. There’s some magnificent imperial architecture, too. I found it hard to find somewhere decent to eat at the weekend downtown, too.

Boston – on the strength of a single weekend there – it’s cooler and more human and more enjoyable.

Early. If there’s competition then many employers will think – right, we’ve got a dozen applicants, let’s start interviewing right away. Later applications won’t make the cut.

Yes! It’s a much better way if you don’t mind calling someone from out of the blue. It shows intiative, and it saves them fees.

I sometimes start by saying “I understand that you have a vacancy for a xxx. ” You may have to tell the HR people that you’re a candidate, not another agent

Thanks but no need- I’ll be in the van.
I owe you a tour of that anyway.

Stoner, that’s looking fabulous. I wish I had the energy (sic) to do something as ambitious. So when we’re riding in the Malverns do we come round to your place for a long hot shower?

At least try a Mezzo, too. They fold almost as small as a Brompton and ride better.

Dunno about Blackberry (have you googled?) but there’s an Android application called Grid Reference which does exactly that.

I dunno about airlines, but I heard that if you buy a cheap return ferry ticket on some operators but fail to use the return leg, your credit card gets stiffed for the differnce between your discounted fare and the full single fare.
    Check the airline T&Cs.

I usually cycle by myself cos I didn’t like holding up the chaps i rode with. So that makes me crap, but I enjoy myself. I have too many bikes, mainly unrideable, but I like tinkering with them. I’m bad at that, too.

As a plump peasant in my late 50s’ I’m happy that I go out at all.

    Sit tight, ride it out.
If you’re concerned about staying in a job then your prospects of keeping employed are better in a company you’ve been with for 3 years, than if you’re the new man in a place you don’t know.

Often vacancies arise because a company is going down and the rats start to leave the sinking ship – you won”t know that’s the case until you join.

No idea but there are some dry hills just behind the city that are very rideable. I walked up from centre of town in a couple of hours. There’s a sad fortress on top overlooking the city, you’ll see what’s so bad about it when you get there.

The border with BiH is close to the NE, but I don’t know if there are controls.

I haven’t got a layout pic for our 6m lonf Ducato, but it’s got a double bed across the back, small firdge / sink/ cooker unit, bathroom, dancefloor and seating area. The front seats spin.

MSP, I’ve been on both sides.
    Here’s a thought experiment.

Let A invest in & build a fantastic product and put it on a shelf.
Don’t tell anyone about it (that’s sales & marketing)

Let B build something that’s only half as good, but invest in literature, salespeople, publicity.

After 3 months, who has the revenue?

I agree that all other things being equal you need a great product & service – but the sales process HAS to be there.
I’m pointing out that even in the space idustry which you think is pure and bullshit-free, there is a need for the suit & tie to bring in your wages.

Yes, working for a small software company in Bath. It had some nice people and a controlling boss who had arranged the desks so that the staff couldn’t talk to each other. I didn’t like aspects of the company, so I wrote a report on what was wrong with it, and on Friday afternoon handed him the report, talked it through, then left.
    🙂 I’m pleased I got out.

There are many roles in business which are equally important.
I’m pointing out that in your industry the people who make the deals to build the products which keep you employed, will be suited & booted.

However, a company with excellent sales & marketing and a poor product will do well; whereas an excellent product with bad sales & marketing will get completely nowhere.

MSP: You may be right about Japanese companies & the banking sector, but if you actually want some business from them, you need them to respect you and that means agreeing to common business terms and appearances.

Yes, even creative software companies know that selling to the Man requires thinking outside the standard-sized box of non-conformism. You will even find that your employer’s representatives will wear suit & tie when bidding for the business that pays your wages. Why not call them up on the internal and ask? Tell us tomorrow.

My 25+ year old Prestige Lancashire peeler is still doing well. I’ve had to re-bind the string handle a couple of times after it rotted away.
It’s not great for carrots, though.

I have always felt that people who dress smarter than I have to for work must be cleverer.

As above, that’s why they do it.
I apologise for the “growing up” remark.
I used to have a similar role, in which I had to change regularly from boiler-suit to business suit. As above, get some clothes to leave at work in a suit-hanger and if yuo don’t wear boiler-suits for the grubby work, get some. You can keep whatever’s underneath or changed out of clean.

You’re right, ties are useless & anachronistic.
That’s precisely why they are worn, as indicators of being part of the team, or as wanting to be preceived as partaking in the company culture. Yes you can be a rebel or nonconformist but until you have established yourself you will be regarded as not “one of us”.
I’m not saying that this is right, but it’s how the world works.

You’re not being daft but you’re not being observant, either.
If this is happening you need to either leave some smart clothes at work to change into or start dressing smarter at work. And shaving every day so as not to look scruffy.
It’s part of the process of growing up.

If it’s an HTC then the there is a downloadable program that can be used to sync the phone to Outlook. I use it, & it’s fine.
