Yeah if it’s one of the 2 star bolts, as coatesy says the hanger has stripped.
MoonheadFree MemberThe hanger should be ok, the big bolt that connects the hanger to the mech comes in 2 parts so the mech doesn’t have any threads to mess up. If it spins it is most likely stripped. My mate ran his bike for a week in Morzine like this tho!
As for shifting, I had some right trouble with the lower gears on my 5. I had it in 3 different bike shops! The third place replaced the inner and outer that go through the swing arm and that seemed to fix it. I have noticed that the front mech sticks quite a bit when clogged up with mud.
It’s one of those annoying problems though when you just end up replacing parts just to find the problem……I guess you could try the hanger since you have had new front and rear mechs.
MoonheadFree MemberWhich one tightens and which one doesn’t?? If the big one spins it’s prolly stripped……
MoonheadFree MemberLike three fish says……stripped! 🙂
Also, bent mech hangers…..I don’t know of any other way than just looking at it, maybe you could take it off a lay it on something flat. I have had bent ones in the past that have messed up my shifting but the LBS straightened it.
MoonheadFree MemberI have just had a look at my 5 as it lives in the living room. The bolt tightens up and does not keep screwing or turning, i would say you may have buggered the bolt somehow……
My mate had this thing on his bolt on his FSR CX Pro a while ago, I was popping into the LBS so I said I would ask if they had a bolt I could take back for him. The guy at the shop said hanger bolts are the same as the bolt as you find on chainrings.
It worked just fine and cost a few pence. Looking at my 5 I would say this is right. I should say I am no expert but just recounting my experience!
Hope this helps!
MoonheadFree MemberYeah I had this too. Was quite worried it was something in the fork…… Was in Morzine at the time so tried some lube etc. That didn’t really fix it so at home I changed the inner cable and also the outer, all was well again. Something just got a kink somewhere, hope yours is as easy to fix 🙂
MoonheadFree MemberGot one on my 5, only bought it as it was an E-bay bargain. New but came from a display bike so cut down but I put in a cheeky bid and it turned up.
Easy set up etc and looks nice. I am always putting my seat down for playing or descending, it has a fine ribbed texture down the shaft (insert titter) but it still looks new and isn’t looking as worn as much as other posts I have had, Easton, Race Face.
I did notice when riding on one occasion my buttox (arse) must have hit it and I heard it shift, not up or down but the angle of the saddle.. When I got home I checked how tight the bolts were tightened up. I thought they had worked loose but they were still really tight and I could only tighten them a tiny bit more. I don’t know if it was my 14 stone and complete lack of skill or what but all seems to be well now.
I would never have bought one at the RRP tho….what are they? £70 odd…..on reflection I would put it towards an uppy downy post.
Edit…. apologies for the lack of imagery nothing to hand
MoonheadFree MemberIt’s a fair question if you have never been…. Lee & Cragg can get a bit sticky when it’s been tipping it down. Prolly no different from your average trails tho. Never been there and wanted mud tyre or anything.
I’ve ridden it when it’s been bone dry and covered in snow….. all on the rubber that came on my bike, Maxxis ADvantage. Admittedly they are not the best tyres but I don’t mind them and can’t really afford to change tyres for all the different riding conditions.
Just go and have fun.
MoonheadFree MemberSo sorry to hear about your loss, so soon too, just as you got to know him. I hope christmas brings better luck for you.
MoonheadFree Membercome back from the pub…… nice drink with the boys. Now on Rum and coke….with ice…..from the garden….
MoonheadFree MemberI bought my GF everything she wanted… as she is away now we had our Xmas last night. I hinted at a skills course and bike bits…well more than that really when she asked I told her exactly what I would like.
I got a Jamie oliver cooking book….despite everytime he comes on TV I express my dislike for the man and have nothing but praise for Nigel Slater. Also she booked us a weekend in some fancy hotel in the lakes….can’t even take my bike because we have to ‘do stuff’ together.
The crap thing is I have a really important job interview at 2 pm on the day we get back home….
GRRRRRR….. I did ask if we could go the next weekend but she said she wants to keep it free just incase something comes up.
Rant over
MoonheadFree MemberCan’t believe I started a tread and got so accused of spam and astroturf etc…both of which I had to google to find out what I did ‘wrong’.
Si from progressivebikes, Thank you for confirming I have nothing to do with you guys.
Back on topic….. I do like that frame, coil shock, nice lines…. Would be nice to have a blast one one just to compare.
MoonheadFree MemberJust seen the thread…. from a photographic point of view…. Doesn’t look sharp to me but that could just be the lens….also looks slightly underexposed. Focus should be on the eye, which you may have done… just can’t tell as nothing looks sharp.
MoonheadFree Memberscaredypants- Thats just what I’m wondering…. to me slidey dropouts look like a cool idea but in reality would they really make that much difference?
MoonheadFree MemberI’m a freelance photographer! I don’t have any affiliation to any bike company. My website is
That is what I do!
This is a post to gain info and your opinions….I don’t get what I have done wrong?
MoonheadFree MemberNo No No! I own a 5 and love it…. all I want is your thoughts on a frame!!
MoonheadFree MemberIf you don’t have anything to do later that day…. **** it and have a blast with your mates… it’s ****ing Christmas after all…..
MoonheadFree MemberWhat a random but cool thread idea!!
Took this series of the Tinsley Towers demolition a while back…..
MoonheadFree MemberI have never had bar ends but then never felt like I need to change the position of my hands to be more comfortable.
I always wear gloves, they have padding which helps but mostly stop my hands slipping off the bars when I get sweaty hands.
My mate bought a pair of grips that are ergonomic… something like this
They work for him and when I had a quick go felt quite nice, not for me tho.
I know it probably isn’t cool to have bar ends on risers but if it works for you do it….who cares what other people say?
MoonheadFree MemberHe might be a nice bloke but he comes across as such a tool.
I think he should be punched, shot, pan fried and served with a stilton foam.
MoonheadFree MemberI’m a freelance photographer and it has only happened a couple of times, surprisingly.
Been told to move on before by security guards, one on public land while photographing a building in Leeds. I told him what I was doing was perfectly legal…public pavement bla bla and he left me to it but just stood there watching me.
Once in a car park. I was on the top taking a few cityscapes. Nothing to do with work etc. I was stopped on the way out. The bloke told me in a perfectly civilized manor that if I wanted to take pictures from the car park I needed permission in the future.
As long as you are on public land no one has the right to stop you taking pictures. Legally you are allowed to take a picture of anyone or anything. However the police can stop you and request that you delete your images. They may use the anti terrorism act.

I always try to be discrete, avoid confrontation by explaining what I am doing and why.
MoonheadFree MemberFlash coming from the same direction as the lens (unless subtle) can look pretty awful so something that can be bounced and that will take diffusers, home made or otherwise, will make a great addition to your kit.
Also you don’t have to stop at just one! Couple of off camera flashes on stands and you are into a whole different world of experimentation!
Enjoy!
MoonheadFree MemberWe have all been there! Can’t live with em, can’t kill em… right???!
Hit the trails t’mo with a stinking hangover, do something mental and forget about her!
Just promise me you won’t call Psychic Interactive tonight!!!!
MoonheadFree MemberThat sounds pretty good advice cheers palmer77, from what I have read recently being over familiar or even funny can be a big downfall. Thanks.
MoonheadFree MemberI hope your ins pays out. It is horrible when they don’t. Had 2 experiences when other drivers have wrecked my cars. One was so high on E she hit me then bounced of 4 other cars! She drove off then ditched her car. I drove round and luckily found it abandoned behind a pub. It took me months to get the claim through and much longer back my excess back. Turns out it wasn’t even her car.
I also got whacked by a bloke in a car park…I was stationary at the time and he came round a corner so fast he bounced off the front of my car. He maintained that his music was so loud he didn’t hear the crashing sound and drove off.
I had to pay out lots for that one, car park accidents are a total non starter. The CCTV was the best bit. I went to find out if I could get a copy of the tape to be told that all the cameras in our works car park were fake!
MoonheadFree MemberI’m not religious, really don’t like the commercial side but do love spending time with my family. We are few in numbers and all have the same view that it is more important to do things together and not stress over presents, shopping etc.
We don’t spend 8 hrs panic buying everything in the supermarkets because they close for one day. We have a lovely meal together, maybe a walk and also do our own thing if we want to. It’s simple, really enjoyable and totally stress free.
I buy presents for friends who love Christmas, also love buying gifts for their kids. I love giving them presents of the educational variety and seeing their faces light up.
MoonheadFree MemberUsed both, have XT now and not noticed much diff. Both work well. Will replace with SLX when time comes.
XT Weight 256g for 11 – 32T
SLX Weight 282g for 11-32T
Care of the Shimano website!
MoonheadFree MemberMy mate took a HT(with a sus seat post) and I took a Trance X. He enjoyed it and even did Plenney but he spent most of the time on his front wheel.
I’d go back but with much more travel, as mentioned in previous posts it is full of ruts and brake bumps. I was using every last mm of travel but it was still so much fun.
The XC stuff there is amazing but I can’t help but think the red and black runs into Manzine (cos is a total man fest) and Les Gets would be so much more fun on something with at least 140mm back and front.
Just my view
MoonheadFree MemberI’m in Yorkshire… bit of a drive but could be tempted to make a couple of days out of it. Possibly a couple of mates would be interested too… we have been kicking ideas about for what to do next, maybe a weekend away or whatever and I think this would be a cool idea.
Jedi, email is in my profile. Could you send me your prices? I might be able to make it an Xmas present from the GF!
