I don’t own one but like you I did consider one, although a new one so would have been covered by a warranty. If you are buying second hand just be sure to give the frame a really good checking over. If I remember correctly the press fit BB caused some problems as did the carbon rear end.

For me… the possibility of problems was enough to put me off. I just didn’t want the hassle, being 14 stone and prone to giving my bikes a hard time I went for a 5. Mate of mine has a 2011 Zesty 514, had a good play on it…no doubt they are cracking bikes, light, fast and so capable. It’s worth noting that the % of bikes effected was very small in comparison to those that didn’t.

    winterfold,

Before you saw what light? What does that mean?

I’m not saying they stopped and shook my hand or actually say hello verbally, I can recognize a discrete nod. Doesn’t always happen though. I don’t care what someone is riding, or if they are lycra clad or commuting…no harm in a bit of a nod.

I think the point here is that you said you were about to ask if you could sit with them. Maybe if you had asked the question they would have opened up and said yes.

I don’t think it’s a roadie V MTB thing, it’s more about 3 mates sitting at a table and not really thinking about the people around them. I think it would have been nice if they had seen a fellow biker and offered you a seat.

If I am riding my MTB on the road in between off road riding I always say hi to any roadies I encounter, most say hi back. If they don’t I would put it down to the person over the discipline.

I think they are good, but only been running a week. Bought the 2.25 version for the front, I think it was only about £20. So far so good, I ride in the same areas as you.

When fitting (tubes, soon to go tubeless) I thought the sidewall felt quite thin. In comparison to the snakeskin Ralph I have on the rear. I think only time will tell.

Everything else aside I like them, grippy, pretty fast rolling and quite light. for £20 they are worth a punt.

Maybe a worse predicament, got a cold, trying to kill it with a couple of wife beaters, got a first date at 12.

She has already told me she is on a bender tonight.

Me thinks it will be a messy fail.

Stevey, yeah I can see what you mean….thing is with saddles it’s all a matter of opinion RE: comfort. The only thing about the I-beam range is that you have to use the I-beam saddles and posts together.

If I was after a saddle I would be looking here. Just ordered some stuff, arrived within a week and cheapest I could find. Loads of choice.

Had my eye on this one but ran out of cash.

SDG Bel Air saddle on my 5. Not the most comfortable I have used, it has rails so not part of the I-beam range.

Looks like a good deal tho….

In my experiance for short rides of a few hrs it’s fine but on a long ride I find myself standing up to give my ass a rest. As for durability I can’t fault it though, I’m not careful with it and after 8 months it still looks in top condition.

Disco ones are new to me, I too am not convinced by the Superstar sintered pads. For that price I will give them a go next time I need pads, if they are junk it’s no biggy. If you get them and like them let us know!

    Hi gb1m,

Well I bought the Five S due to lack of funds. Decided I would upgrade the bits I didn’t like as I intend on keeping it for a couple of years.

Got a 3×9 at the mo.To be honest it isn’t a very nice drive train, Deore and Raceface….totally trash BB. Thinking about a SRAM 2×10 groupset with chain guide and bash….if I can find it!

I came across a company called MRP that might just do such a thing but haven’t had time to research propperly.

Found this….not sure how much help it is tho!

I really feel for someone who spends a load of hard earned cash on a bike and has problems from day 1. You would expect a new bike to just work, Especially a bike like that!

My mates 7 month old stumpy elite is currently out of action, the fox forks collapsed and the rear wheel fell apart at Dalby last weekend.

As for the chain, I have the same problem on my 5 mostly OK but hit something really harsh and it’s off. I’m no expert on this stuff but have been thinking that a chain device is the solution.

Really hope you get things sorted, it looks like a great bike, be a shame if you got rid so soon.

Short travel FS will do you proud. I went from HT to FS after a back injury, really does help. Can go out all day without feeling like I got bummed by a rhino.

The Cube shock location does put me off too, even with the guard it must be more prone to crap ultimately wearing the seals? Maybe Cube owners know better.

LBG, what about a Zesty 514 up or a Canyon Nerve XC? Granted the head angle is 69 and they are 120mm but maybe you could live with that?!?

It’s an easy XC ride, nothing too challenging and some really great viwes. Done it twice clockwise, I would say that is the best way.

For what you could spend getting them fixed + postage + decals etc you could spend just a bit more and get some little used Tora’s?

    CG, Nice bike,

I know over rotation is best avoided but those levers do look a bit horizontal, having said that it must work for you!

A light, short travel full sus or stick with a HT. No point in lugging 140mm of travel to work and back. If you want to make the ride more comfortable try a suspension seatpost? Thudbuster?

I would say go for broke…sounds like you are being subtle because you don’t know how he will react. He might not be sure what you mean so tell him, or ask him out for a date, not something that could be confused as mates hanging out.

I have a mix of xt, deore and raceface drive train. To be honest it feels rubbish compared to the 10×3 XT kit on my mates ride. I’m going for the XT groupset from actionsports.de! Had SRAM X7 on my last bike and it wasn’t as smooth but worked very well.

Looking at the 2 Canyon bikes you mentioned, I would go for the XC8. You obviously want something more XC oriented rather than one of their AM models. The XT makes for a lighter bike…

The good thing about Shimano kit is that you can pick it up pretty cheap. The downside I have found is that it takes a little more looking after. I find that I have to tweak my gears before a ride.
