ive been coming on here for about 5 years and it has gone a bit vile of late…

much more of a shitty vibe and attitude from people, must be the economic downturn and all the doom and gloom 😉

the Golf R32 thread is a classic example and ‘that’ vulcan thread!

i love it though and ive had some great answers when ive asked the most boring questions..

i was 18 FFS, what was i thinking!!!!

    like this one….

i only bought it because it had electric mirrors and sunroof!!

it was like sitting in an old peoples home!!

YOU get the senior management to sign-off what THEY accept as a suitable backup for the company, based on the risk.

As the IT Manager, it is only my reponsibility to RECOMMEND a backup process, NOT give the final thumbs up. That’s the responsibility of the directors.

thats half my battle, they see a figure and think “HOW MUCH” but dont realise the implications if data was lost.

    cheers again

Right I think i have it straight in my head…

ive apprently got about £1600 to play with…

    What about…

    Dell NX200 NAS with 4 x 1TB space

Copy of Backup assist running on it.

2 x External 1TB hard drives to back up the NAS, take one home each night? (we have to have off-site storage for the company insurance)

Or have i got it all wrong?

cheers all some great advice and suggestions…

xiphon graet idea and setup you have there, so ‘in laymans terms’ you whack one of these into a server

then connect up your external drives? i love the idea of just sticking the external drive into the PC to restore.

i guess it’s a toss up one what solution and the budget!

You do take the current backup tapes offsite, don’t you?

Yes, take tapes home everynight, learnt the hadway years ago.

Have you also checked whether you could actually recover the data from the current tapes, or have you an offsite drive/server?

in a word NO, the irony of this is not even funny. if the office burned down, i’d have the backup tape but then have a nightmare to actually restore it!

Just upgrate your tape drive to LTO4 or suchlike.

good idea but it doesnt solve the storage space problem.

i think i’ll go with a NAS solution and then back it up to the external hard drive, buy 2 of them and take one home each day.

    thanks for the quick replies..

it may be worth just getting a new server with a new tape drive and moving the data over before it inevitably dies and leaves you stuck.

thats what im worried about, she is creaking already, when it restarts after an update it takes ages!!

    Cheers… will take a look

i just thought aswell, that DELL NAS doesnt solve the backup problem side of things, as in.. i’d still have to back it up every night.

maybe ive picked you up wrong but that link to dabs is for a buffalo NAS, i already got one very similar but it was cr*p, although it says it will work with windows server and NTFS it didnt, it conencted to the network, i copied over all our data and there were no NTFS permissions. (it was well documented on forums) could not get it to ‘join/see the domain’

just read this if you havent already.. it will depress the living sh*t out of you!

yes before all the book whores tell me “but it didnt say it was a nuclear fall out”

its gives quite a good idea of what it may be like..

i think i’d run outside in my pants and get a nice suntan then melt.

it would take years and years for the earth to recover, it wouldnt be worth it.

i did itfor 2 years on a 125 honda varadero

im by no means a ‘proper biker’ (so take my tips with a pinch of salt!)infact i only bought the bike as wife lost her job and we needed to make savings asap.

i had half tidy kit, when it rains you will get steamed up and it’s not very nice, as for snow and ice i tried it a few times and nearly lost it big time (lack of experience) thankfully i could get a lift into work on bad days.

heated grips are a must, i buoght a ‘taller screen for the bike aswell which helped with the wind.

being honest i dont miss it one bit but it helped us out at the time, i never got the ‘biking bug’.

one good point is it changed my driving style in a car, you see the world from a totally different persective when you havent got nice chunky metal doors protecting you.

as said above sometimes i felt totally invisible on the bike.

    good luck!

(havent read most of the above)

was sat down feeding the baby last night watching view to a kill, was wetting myself laughing at the bit on the golden gate bridge with the airship, when the bad guy (whats his face) is figting with bond on the bridge.

the stunt doubles they used look nothing like them and the wigs were a crime!

it amazes me the cost of hiring out an airship etc then spending 5 pence on the stunt doubles attire.

my wife got laid off 2 years ago, to cut costs i got rid of the second car (mine) and did my CBT and bougth a bike to commute on.

its was ok, i was never a bike fan, it was a pain in the arse in bad weather though, hassle getting your gear on and off, somewhere to store it in work etc etc.

i ddi save a far whack on fuel and insurance.

dont listen to half of them on here, 90% of them are ‘fair weather riders’ 😉

oh if you do get a 125, may i suggest the Honda Varadero, its a big bike with a small engine, some of the other 125 are scary to ride, with the vara you sit nice and high up.

i posted the exact same questions few weeks back 😉

anyway everyone came back and said the combi washer AND dryers are crap, they take way longer than a stand alone dryer hence you use loads more electric.

with regards, brands, with have cheap as chips beko washer and a dryer and they have last for 6 years.

have you got power in a shed, make room for a dryer in there? (a lot of mates do this)

theres only one way to end this thread, the way the office ended…

"Life is just a series of peaks and troughs. And you don't know whether you're in a trough until you're climbing out, or on a peak until you're coming down. And that's it you know, you never know what's round the corner. But it's all good. 'If you want the rainbow, you've gotta put up with the rain.' Do you know which "philosopher" said that? Dolly Parton. And people say she's just a big pair of tits."

the office would have been funny whoever played brent……………..
    gervais is a coCk

what a load of bollox (but your are entiltled to your opinion:)

for the comedy genuis that was 'the office' you cannot beat that and i salute him. lots of my mates cant stand him and never 'got' the office but i think you have had to actually have worked in an office to understand it fully.

his stand up is not brilliant, but he is not the worst.

i love alan partridge and vic and bob aswell, again mates cannot understand what i see funny in it…. you either get it or you don't.

i think that type of comedy is surreal, compared to more common 'middle of the road' stuff

then again some of my mates find alan car, peter kay and Al Murray funny and i think they are utter tripe!

    each to their own though!

aaaahhhhh, thats what i want to do as i play alot of games aswell…

i just naturally thought putting it thruogh the TV was the default?

does the PS3 'pick up the optical' or do you have to manually set it?

    cheers by the way

they actually have a good rep for build quality these days compared to the old 182's, mate had a company car diesel one and it was bomb proof.

but i wont get into "the French cars are not as crap as 90% of people think" on this post as its been done enough on here 😉

we finally got up to speed with the rest of the world and bought an IPOD, had a few mates over saturday night and they were laughing as 90% of the albums were fomr the 90's…..

most of the bands these days are utter tripe, i was watching the highlights of V and reading and i was almost crying….

i doubt its actually the PS3, as above your router or the game you are playing. does it mess up when you play different games?

i had a problem recently,i put a corner shelf in and put the cordless phone next to the router, my wireless router and internet connection went ape shit.

turns out the router and the phone were on the same signal, changed the router and its been fine…
