Thanks mrblobby, I’ll pretty much just be doing gentle spinning for the time being, and probably only short sessions until the pain improves. I have just spotted the Planet X one, spotted one on ebay which looks similar but has 5 “speed” settings and is £60. Is this likely to be hopelessly bad?

Just having a look at ebay options – there seem to be some for about £60! I notice there seems to be different systems for mounting the rear wheel. Is there anything I should look out for?

For £265 with those Zipps I’m all over this!

I love my 29er, but possibly just because it fits me and rides the way I like.

Thanks guys. Love the way the pedals work but this is totally a pain in the ass. May as well ride them without greasing them at the weekend and invest in a rebuild kit (or 12).

[/quote]mokl, do you look like this?

andyl, how did you get hold of that picture?

I encountered something like this in one of the woods near me and was also filled with rage. I did some rummaging and found some letters with an address. However, after cycling home and having time to think about it I realised this was probably someone who had been paid to clear a house – maybe a landlord paying for someone to clear up after some tenants had left the house in a bit of a mess. As annoyed and angry as I was I did not pursue it as I couldn’t imagine the police being able to follow a trail for something like this which would probably be very low on their priority list. I was glad to see the council or landowner had cleared it by the next week but sometimes wonder if I did the right thing. Incidentally some horse riders saw me rummaging through the piles of stuff and gave me the oddest look. I explained how angry I was and was looking for anything incriminating to report. They appeared unconvinced!

If you use the term “not fit for purpose” to describe what you believe to be premature wear on a bearing, in my opinion you are misguided at best.

    That is astoundingly beautiful.

I’ve done it on the same ratios and although I’d like to I can’t really blame the ratios for holding me back! If it’s what you normally ride you’ll be fine.

I’ve been stuck in behind a tandem ridden by 2 physically fit and capable cyclists. The power and speed that they could put out on the flats was awesome! I was expecting them to sit at the back… I was wrong!

If somebody insulted my wife in front of me I’d probably buy them a pint ;-)

These look fantastic and would love one but would never make use of it! Just sorting out my original 853 PA which I run as my singlespeed winter/filth bike and had forgotten how great it is.

Thanks riklegge and swanny – both of those are great suggestions. I have ordered the Beerbabe one as it would have been rude not to after she created it in a day!

Thanks all for the wealth of suggestions – there are several “goers” amongst them. I actually spotted the thread about “Beerbabe” last night and sent her a message. The tool wallet thing looks really good although a trifle large for a jersey pocket. I sent her a message and it seems as though she is working on something! I’ll keep you all updated as am interested to see what she comes up with.

Fair play. I have yet to knowingly see one.

I wasn’t being sarcastic, although I think I might find that somewhat heavy and sweaty on the bike!

Thanks Northwind, will take a look at the Ortlieb. As running tubeless a spare innertube is an essential item (which wouldn’t fit in the Topeak)!!
Actually as I’ve just gone 29er I don’t even have any spare tubes in the correct size – I’ll just use those anchovy things as padding.

    That’s brilliant. Unfortunately I can’t afford £70.

Stuff used to get really rattled about in the saddle bag too – I tried padding between my multi tool and co2 and that would wear through in a ride.

frogstomp – that thing looks closer to the mark – reminds me that my mobile tends to get a pasting in the back pocket, even though I try to put it in the Wiggle glasses case I got ‘free’ at Mountain Mayhem.

jonba – good point, I just like the idea of having everything altogether in my pocket as I am typically disorganised and tend to forget things when I head out on the bike. Will look at waterproof saddle bags and hadn’t heard of some of those brands. I was using the Topeak until it got lost/stolen, and before I replace it am considering “alternative solutions”. I think an ammo belt would probably be best though, I could get stacks of CO2 cart’s in one of those and look like the boss of the trails at the same time.

Thanks for the suggestion. In my mind I had a vision of some small, wraparound wallet-y thing. Maybe I’ll just get some good quality zip lock bags!

Oh yes, thanks. I have used those but found they get soaking wet on the mtb (inside and out) – unless there is something better available (I used to have a mini topeak one)?

I don’t think that attempting the above is likely to end well… You may well get it to fit, but to work properly? From what I remember of my 575 rear end it was significantly different in shape and profile to the ASR5 one. I may well be wrong of course.

I’m not an expert, but the bike looks too small to me and your riding position appears cramped. I am 5’11” and ride a large Superlight – I know it’s not the same bike but I believe the sizing is similar/nearly the same, and I definitely wouldn’t want it any smaller.

EDIT – don’t know if this would be relevant to your problem, simply an observation (which may well be wrong!).

    Hope you sort it out.

A safe bet in my experience (and based just down the road from me). Buy with confidence.
