My Piglet at Antur last September. Absolutely fine on blue and Red, and I managed some of the black. Great place run by great people, you’ll have a blast!

My only advice is to run tubeless if you can, pinch flats are pain in the arse!

Anyone feel their wheels are too small

It is a nice looking frame though and perfect for a round the town hack bike

Then I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Filiform corrosion is a surface corrosion and shouldn’t effect the structural integrity unless it gets really bad.

Thanks for all the info chaps. Next question may be tough but hey ho, dig deep!

What’s not so good about the Rocket. What don’t you like, and is there anything that makes you look at another bike and think maybe I should of got that?

theendisnigh – Perfect position for maintenance, love how the chain is stroking the carpet. Mrs. mmel just loves it when I’m working on the bike this way…

Black is looking good to me, don’t think I mind it going a little dull. Which areas would benefit most from a Heli wrapping?

I’m guessing Filiform Corrosion from your description, and the fact that it is under a painted surface. Shouldn’t cause too much concern in the short term but I would be looking at a frame strip, dip and re-spray if I wanted it to last.

    Here’s some info.

Whilst on the subject of forks, does anyone run their Rocket with 140mm up front, and if so how does it fair?

I’m pricing up a Rocket build at the moment and even with using the bits and bobs I’ve got already it’s still going to be the best part of £2K so I’d say the complete bike will be in the region of £2500. That’s with a pretty thrifty build.

I’m on a bit of a budget so fancy forks are a no no. Looking at 2012 Revelation RCT3’s at the moment. I’ve read on here that Mr. Loco himself rides with them so they’ve got to do something right. Think I can get them for under £400.

Those MT8’s look good, but I’ve read that they’re a bit of a plug and play fork with less room for tweaking?

As for Hubs, it’s looking like Hope now. Those DT’s are markedly more expensive. Has anyone attempted to re-lace a rim to a new hub 8O

Looking at plugging in an x-fusion fork for a bit more stiffness

Are you finding the Revs have too much flex then?

For around the same money I’d be getting roof bars and popping it up there.

Alex – that is swinging it for me, though I think my Rev’s will be white

Are we all still on Hope hubs?

Edging towards black at the moment!

How about rear hubs, have we all got Hope?

I’m at 12 but could only book a large. Looking at the dimensions and talking to Cy I’m probably more suited to a medium but we shall see.

    Hmmm, orange or black….?

mrlebowski – is that a vote for black and white then?

I have similar dilemma for a Rocket build that I’m planning. I’ve had a good time with Rockshox forks in the past and especially like their serviceability with the wealth of info on the net. Just wonder what else is out there…

At the moment these are taking my fancy and the price seems good. I prefer the 2012 revelations as they still had dual air for extra fettling! From reading on here Mr. Loco himself uses them on his bike so that to me is praise indeed!

as above, the manual is all about balancing on the back wheel without pedaling

Mind you, while I can easily get the bike vertical on the trainer I’m still pretty crap out on the trails

So the whole turbo trainer thing doesn’t work too well then after all…

I watch with interest, I need a new rear hub too, though for different reasons. Don’t really fancy Hope because of the racket they make…

    I’d be needing 142×12 though

    I can’t do it either.

I can jump, drop, bunny hop and wheely pretty well but the closest I’ve ever come to holding a manual for any time I went off the back and skidded along the road outside the in-laws house with my 7 year old nephew watching.

As a 35 year old man I felt ashamed

tomaso – If they were white and had a tapered steerer I’d take you up on those but for the sake of an extra £100 I think I’d prefer the French ones. Thanks all the same.

Just a thought, but maybe it’s not air in there at all, but a coil spring?

    Not

Never had a problem with cable stretch and if you set the remote up carefully you shouldn’t ever have a problem.

Even if you do it’s an easy job to take the cable out and move the end clasp a little.

Bottom mounted cable (so it doesn’t coil when dropped)

    Minimal slop/movement

    Neat remote

You just described the KS LEV, I’ve got one and it really is good!

Don’t bother with the crap Al hed doctor bolts. A nice steel one from any other headset/top cap will work just fine and not snap on you. Just be careful with you don’t overload the bearings!

Ragley have a whole load of new frames round the corner, their FB page has plenty of pics. New Blue Pig, Piglet and a 29er Big Wig.

The piglet frame gets my vote. Link

Had mine for 18 months, love the bike though its the old style and I think the new ones have changed a fair bit.

It’s not the lightest bike in the world, but then I did’t expect it to be with my build. It has quite a slack geometry with a long top tube and feels most at home flying down single track. It climbs pretty well but is no whippet.

I use mine on some pretty tough terrain in north Wales and the Peaks and it’s more than enough bike for me, even with the limited travel of my 120mm forks.

I run Deore/SLX/XT 3×9 with XT brakes, 120mm Reba, EN521 rims, Hope hubs, and a LEV seatpost with Spoon saddle. If you want more info let me know.

That looks like it’s taken quite a whack. My worry there would be that there is de-lamination on the inside. Does the area feel soft at all?

As discussed in another thread about carbon, you could do a basic tap test on the area and listen for any change. The problem is there is that that area has quite a few changes in section and shape which may affect what you hear. Worth a try though, before you start stripping paint and and looking for your local NDT firm

oooh, by my maths that makes a set of Revelation RLT’s under 200 quid.

    Must… resist… unnecessary… purchase

Just to join in and further the comments by chief9000. I’m an aerospace NDT engineer and spend my professional life looking for cracks in aircraft structures both conventional and composite.

It is true to say that we use tap testing on composites, though we have a device called a woodpecker that taps at an automated frequency and triggers and alarm if a problem is found. We tend to use this technique to look for disbond in the lay up, or when we suspect a composite skin to of come away from a honeycomb core. Unfortunately it’s not so good with cracks, but then composites really don’t crack how you would expect them to. They tend to shatter down through the composite layers and the better way for us to pick that up is with shear-wave or through transmission ultrasonics.

As for the OP’s pic, it’s pretty hard to tell what’s going on without seeing it in person but the first thing I would be doing is getting the paint off. Carbon fibre is able to flex a lot more than the paint and lacquer on top, and removing the paint in the area will tell you a lot more about what is going on below. If the indication is still there then you may have a problem but again it’s hard to tell without looking at it.
