I suppose the other way round is to source a LED lamp – how to work out what lamp is compatible with my battery/charger?

Re 20s I wish they’d sign these better as a few times I’ve pootled down a road at28 only to find Iwas 8mph over the limit.

Re speed limiting cars to 70 – I can’t see this saving any cycling lives, I’d prefer black boxes in all cars that provide evidence on driving so drivers don’t squirm out of dangerous driving charges

Wear longs and squish nettles etc down whilst riding. Secateurs and gardening gloves for the brambles. If serious blocked trail then I’ll take loppers or a hand saw out with me.

Hmm sounds like its not the tyre for this winter.
Any recommendations for a Winter XC tubeless tyre? I’d rather spend a few quid for something light and fast for the drier days as long as it copes with the glop days.

Most noticeable thing for me is when I come off I’m going way faster than usual.
Bonus is that my lazy bike non-maintanance regime is no longer causing me to grind through expensive drive trains.

I’m definitely irritated with the search price being valid only for one size in an ugly colour. When doing a search, particularly for clothes, I’ll often now ignore Chainreaction and check out other retailers.

    excellent thanks for that link.

btw none of them wearing helmets and without exception they’re all now dead. Coincidence? I think not

yup as above compatability really only comes in with shifters and mechs. Plus Campag is a bit messy with road bikes

Try the glasses option first, if it’s still a problem then it may be worth being referred to a specialist by your GP. You could have a problem with your tear ducts (the eye’s drain pipe)

I’ve 2×10 Ultegra on my posh bike and Tiagra on my commuter. Both change crisply. I find the improvement marginal. It’s nice having great toys but don’t break the bank.

The CTC magazine used to put in articles from it’s early editions. One of these was a retired army major just after WWI who toured France on a tricycle. Being aware of how aggressive French farms dogs could be he had his service revolver stored in a handle bar mounted holster and shot three on his holiday. I imagine a tricycle would make a stable firing platform.
Not owning any firearms, my technique with aggressive dogs is to out run them if they come from behind or side. Weaving distracts the aim of biting fast dogs. If they’re in front then I drift towards the right, they track me, then when v close, I decleat my right leg turn as I turn sharply to the left, inevitably they’re trying to adjust and are off balance, so that when the heel of my straight right leg catches them in the shoulder and they go down. Shoulder is a better target than the head as with the head they may shrug off the blow and potentially bite back

Has anyone a view on the Alfine 11 – it seems to be a lot of cash for an extra 3 gears ?

Definitely a job for a well stocked bikeshop maybe one that isn’t local.
Go for a brand with a big range of gloves so that when you find the right fitting one then you can go for the same size in the different gloves you’ll inevitably need – armoured, warm weather, cold weather, bleeding cold and effin’ artic.

I’ve done a few courses and they’re reasonably helpful.
I carry a first aid kit which is good for cuts n’ grazes, maybe dislocations and has a few helpful meds in it for pain/allergies etc. Tick knife is the most used toy in the kit.
The courses are most useful for reinforcing the “common sense” stuff e.g. avoid moving potential back injuries, have a minor head injury checked out when you get off the hill, pressure on big bleeds etc.
CPR is worth trying I suppose but if the casulty is miles away on a moor the chances are they’ve had it.

4 miles to work for me which seems about perfect for a nice ride in work clothes. Much more and I’d probably get lycraed up for a bit of speeed

I’m broadly positive about critical mass and hope they don’t go away. I think London is a big enough city to fit CM once a month.

£££ per hour is more relevant so you can compare road bikes with BMXs etc etc

He’d be best to try out the sizing as the majority of bikes come with compact frames now.
It’s a good time to pop out to a local bike shop and see what’s in the sales.
I would guess 5-7 hundred quid for an unfashionable named bike with an aluminium frame, carbon fork and Tiagra or Sora groupset.

there was a good article and series of letters in the ctc magazine a while back – they called the effect “shimmy” from memory it seemed to be related to resonance. The way to prevent crashing, again from memory was to close knees on the top tube to damp the vibration or maybe that just reduced the risk of sh*tting yourself 🙂

On occasions when I’ve been there in the past one of the farmers has opened up a field for car parking (charged) It may be worth driving into Kentmere to check it out and heading back if you’re not in luck.
