English offroad coast to coast is one (2016?).
    Sandstone way for this year.
    200k Audax this year.
    More Highland rides
Tourdivide would be great but that’s on my I’ll never have the time or money or knees to tackle that

Thanks peeps – it definitely sounds worth doing on a day I’m feeling fit.
Will it be snow bound ATM ? Mind I’m probably not going to make it down ’til Easter

Good for off roading but less good for commuting on traffic/leaning on stuff. Kind of cool lokking in a Carlos Fandango extra wide wheels sort of way

You can have as much fun on a 10 year old bike as a new one.
But it sounds like you’ve a spending itch so buy a nice discable frame and have fun upgrading with whizzy toys over the next year

Sh1te bike with tatty components and a geet big lock for parking in town. So far I’ve got lucky

I used to – Trailquest and Polaris events. It made a fun and/or challenging day out on the bikes. Give it a shot if some of the events are near you

Risking the approbium of the STW horde, I must confess that my other new interest is fellrunning which also involves unsteadily travelling slowly in public places but I’m ashamed to say without the assistance of even one wheel.

Thanks some good tips; progressive stages with walls etc/U tube/ and nice to hear that a cheapie will do for learning but by the sound of it I’ll probably need to invest some more cash before I accept any offers to be a paid show off in a circus

I think Critical Mass has had its day. There’s better ways to campaign and the best way of raising the profile of cycling is to ride every day not just once a month in the dark with a few pals

Loop is rubbish as even if you find a light that doesn’t fall off it shifts depending on what you’ve in the bag.
I use a seat stay light and a bodged méchano mounted light on the back of my saddle rails. Depending on the bike I’ve also a Lumicycle rack mounted bright light

Nothing exciting – just a couple of bikes serviced but I wanted to say -what a nice thread topic so well done CapJ

I’m v happy with TRP Hylex brakes on my tourer. They’re under 200 quid for the pair. They’re not integral shifters/brakes but I had a spare set of bar end shifters and most of a MTB group set to fit so it was a cheap upgrade.

Aww dang. I hope the Kinesis isn’t the wrong geometry as the, admittedly lovely looking, Spot is over twice the price

I thought I’d resuscitate this thread to see if anyone has experience of the Kinesis DC37 fork on a Vaya?

I think you can get away with it but will be more comfortable of wider tyres and reduce risk of snapping spokes or twatting your wheels.
I’d probably carry weight in a back pack rather than panniers so if you can protect your wheels more if you do find yourself about to hit a suprise pot hole.

I’m not sold on road shoes. I think there probably is marginal gains to be had with them but unless I get into road racing/time trialing etc then I like the flexibility of being able to walk off the bike and have one cleat type for all bikes.
I have stiff soled mtb race shoes for the road bike and have had no hot spot issues with them

I’m not fussed by the colour but did wonder how robust it would be as it is v light

My concern is the likely response to counter litigation will be to ban cyclists from cycling along certain stretches of road

I found emptying the pack after a wet ride helps but most metal tools will pick up some rust if left damp in its pack

you can get some v long tyre levers for tight tyres.
Maybe worth considering if the rims are that horrible for tyre fitting

Most riding in the Cheviots isn’t particularly technical but there’s plenty of climbing. How tough it is will depend on the weather – some trails can get boggy.
It’s also quite big so be aware that you’ll need to marshal/sign/guide or run the risk of your challengers ending up in Scotland.

I’ve been happy with both makes in the past
Gore maybe a slight edge on function with Castelli having the edge on style.
There’s good deals on both ATM, I went for Gore for my Gillet this time but easily could have gone the other way. I ‘ve given up on Endura as the last two bits of kit have been shoddily put together

I find it takes a while for my body to adjust to a new bike and get aches and pain for a while. If they persisted for a while then I’d probably pay for a bike fit to avoid damaging myself

I’ve done similar in the past – worked ok but possibly shifting wasn’t as crisp as it could have been

Easy winner – any of the numerous eBay /Amazon sold chinese night riding lights with their exploding chargers, nil battery life and dodgy connections

    I commute in a city.

Most issues are around drivers not paying attention and cutting up cyclists, overtaking too close. etc.

Cure – infrastructure investment which prioritizes protection and speedy movement of pedestrians/cyclists. So segregated cycle lanes are the biggy.

Other lesser issues – intentional aggression from drivers and rarely verbal abuse

That sounds just the job Mostly B. I think I’ll invest in one.
The next thing I’ll end up spending cash on is to upgrade the memory card (thingee whatever they’re called)

I like that bar mount but it looks like it has a screw to mount it.
I wonder if there is an equivalent which has a quick release mount like the great Lumicycle light mounts

Gortex jacket on the ridgeway about 10 years ago
I was grumpy for the rest of that day.

I have TRP Hylex on my tourer and am v happy with braking in all conditions. I may upgrade in the future when Shimanos drop in price
It’s got 700 x32s on it so decent contact patch but I don’t know what discs feel like on a race bike

    mlke

I’d keep using it as there’s plenty of tread, no bulges etc. If I could be bothered then I might stick it on the back and keep an eye on it

I like the thermoball vests as they tuck away to a small pocket size ball and are v waterresistant making them ideal to put on to keep cosy when waiting at the start of a ride or for a mechanical etc.
I think ratrace.com had a good deal on them but with limited sizes last time I looked
