I’ll call them in the morning and a couple of other local garages for comparison.

Definitely 0.5h as this is on their invoice. The cost of part is £108.53.

    Its annoying but hey ho

I wonder why no one has revisited what Honda did on their DH bike and stick a derailleur in a box, theoretically all the benefits of both options?

I guess limited range looking at the pictures

Using magnesium for the housing will lower the overall weight but ultimately the steel gears used need to be a certain size to withstand the loads. Using a lighter material for the gears would be higher cost whilst reducing the longevity of the teeth.

I don’t think there is the drive (pun intended) to develop gearboxes for bicycles; they will always be heavier and less efficient* than a chain a derailleur.

And I can’t believe a company like Shimano hasn’t looked hard at gearboxes and concluded that for a majority of cycling requirements derailleurs are better.

*assumes a well maintained drive train

Any talk of gearbox evolution is nonsense; gears and gearboxes have been refined over many years to a point where the gear geometry is as efficient as possible and the mechanical requirements for transferring torque are well known I.e. gearboxes are not going to get significantly lighter as they require a certain amount of meat to live.

Thanks all, a reluctance of that course is my employer contains lots of managers by title. I think I need to look at other avenues for any development such as IMechE etc

Thanks all, quite a popular topic!

I would also be interested in hear the 50 more pressing issues but an appeal of this little part is that its a turned metal thing so requires now mould tooling etc. I.E. I can have a dabble.

I’ll design a Schrader and go from there…

Thanks all, the Milkit kit does look good but a lot going on and probably more than the project I had in mind.

Spooky’s quote “Design me a Schrader style valve that fits in a presta hole” sounds interesting; I’ll fire up my CAD tomorrow and paste something up on here for review

I own a 4 year old and 2 year old. Much of the time I’m bored beyond belief.

    Does it get better?

What is the attraction of belt drive over a chain?

Yes checked behind kitchen units and filled a hole there after they’d eaten the first lot of poison- need to check it again though.

I’ll have to proper look under the floors at weekend and try and find their entry- would they always stem from the sewer? Drains/cracked drains come up a lot when googling.

And from the first round of deaths the smell never really came however flies were in abundance!

I’m hoping since the kitchen is blocked from both rats and UB40 the easy food source has gone so they will bugger off.

Poison is ordered but blocking holes is hard to do since I can’t see any obvious ones

Sony MDR-EX650 are what I currently use, good sound I think and about £40. Get good reviews:

Cheers slackalice, I’ll look at the Sikaflex. I think a seam filler is my only option on reflection as the gaps are irregular.

If it were me I’d leave them but for the sake of a quieter life I’ll do as she requests!

Paper isn’t necessarily the answer as its manufacture does require nasty chemicals. If the packaging was designed to be reused like proper milk bottles that would be better all round

Just bought this large armchair from IKEA:

Seems good value compared to DFS etc. And ready to go on the day. Comfortable too

For my fun bike (BMX) I work out its ROI based on time and what I earn every hour of the year: £4.66 gross. Therefore to pay back my £500 investment I need to ride it for 107 hours which will be about 1 year based on 2 hours riding per week.

With my commuter the only time I’ve worked out mileage cost is when trying to justify a posher bike…

I don’t mind a bashing, but my moral is irrelevant to any politician or political movement.

Killing myself would save some resources but why is it that I even care. Do any other animals manage their worlds beyond the requirements of their selfish needs at the time?

I too have now had the firing pin removed…

Yes, but I have but no GPX…

Route I generally took would be out through Endcliffe Park, Stanage, down Bamford Clough, on road to Hope, up roman road to Hope Cross, down to Edale, up Jacobs Ladder, into Hayfield, on to New Mills along a flat wide bridleway, through New Mills on the A6 and then drop onto the Middlewood Way all the way to Macc. Used to take me about 4-6 hours

Another option that I’m considering is a lighter wheelset but as the stock wheels are nutted types I’m not sure what would fit.

What wheels did you upgrade the Plug to 13thfloormonk?

I’ve camped at North Mort Farm several times and its nice, it is hilly but there are flat pitches. Now we’ve got kids we go to Woolacombe Sands in a static caravan. It is very nice and has camping facilities. Good for kids as there are swimming pools, arcades etc. And you can walk to Woolacombe beach from the site.

There wasn’t so much a change in speed, just trajectory.

I can now fully empathise with other people who’ve seen things as the default reaction for most is to take the piss!

I’d love for it to have been something mundane but I have no explanation for it

A phone/camera would have been useless at filming something so faint. And it definitely wasn’t a helicopter or fighter jet.

I thought maybe Chinese lantern but it didn’t move like something going with the wind.

Prior to this evening I would have read something like my op and thought nothing of it but now I can’t stop thinking about it.

    Thanks Bear,

He estimated the boiler is 9years old. Burner pressures are OK. There’s no room to fit an external vessel so yes it would have to come off the wall.

I will call him today to ask about the logic of changing the flume- since pumping the expansion vessel its not dropping to 0bar but is increasing from 1 to 2bar when running.

I don’t want to pour money at fixing it but also am weary of replacing the complete unit for no reason

    mlbaker

The engineer has stated a reading (both ‘initial combustion and final combustion) of 0.0091; its a Vokera Compact 35HE.

The suggested remedy for both issues was take boiler off wall and replace the expansion vessel and replace the flue. Total cost £440 (parts & labour) but no guarantee of success.

I fear it may be new boiler time…

If I didn’t have 2 kids I’d probably have new stuff regularly and some more exotic holidays so wouldn’t be much better off financially.

Stuff doesn’t love you though, nor shit on your carpet…
