ml – hi… not sure if we’ve met…?

We did, last time you were at my house, persuading me to buy a steel hardtail (which I did). ;-) Martin Little, friend of Tash. :-D

Hello Mr LeeLovesBikesToo! I wondered when we’d bump into each other on here. I’m counting lengths at a swimming pool on Saturday morning, but if you fire me your mobile number (email in profile) I’ll try to catch you at Lochrin Basin. Enjoy the ride, should be fun.

Depending on location, I could certainly be interested. I did the two 2-day ACE Races last year (mountain biking, trail/fell running, kayaking … all tied together with navigation) and am feeling a big hole in my schedule for this year. You might want to post over on the SleepMonsters forum too.

Nice work. It certainly puts my 2 mile commute along a canal path in Edinburgh into perspective. Not sure if I’ll be brave enough to watch the final section to Canary Wharf.

Please can you give more detail on the mount?

Argos and Homebase had some box packs that I used, which were decent.

@Garry_Lager: When I was down on Friday nights during December, January and February, there were normally just one or two others there — great time for riding, especially on clear nights. I’d say it is best to go with someone else for safety though, especially after one of our party slid on ice at a corner.

@bumbly1: Thanks for the MTBscotland link, will keep an eye on that for future rides.

Edit – isn’t South Gyle officially called Edinburgh Park?

South Gyle and Edinburgh Park are separate stations: Wikipedia link.

@stuartie_c – I just saw this thread. I’m running around London on the 25th/26th April, and then having a long-organised birthday barbecue on the 2nd of May. Have a great time, and I’ll be looking forward to seeing the photos.

Not sure if this link has been posted elsewhere, quite relevant to this thread…

I am crying after reading that.

FWIW, I reckon Myspace is already dying and Facebook will start losing market share to smaller more concentrated apps like twitter. Just a hunch though.

Have you seen what Facebook has just changed the first page you see after logging in, into? Twitter with flickr photos on the right hand side.

There’s plenty of interesting things to do on Twitter. Try a search for a topic that interests you, and get discussing things with people … just like on here, expect with a much wider audience.

We went round the seven hills of Edinburgh, plus a few ‘special points’ yesterday as an informal race. Four pairs on bikes, one guy running. Everyone was pretty fit, and the runner just edged the win. Certainly didn’t expect that, but getting bikes up some of those hills was a pain.

@HoratioHufnagel – classic video, although it’s not fully loading for me. Will try from home.

Can you sync the BB with Outlook, for example, first, and then sync the Nokia with it afterwards? That’s how I’ve dealt with this kind of thing before.

Many (Lothian) buses in Edinburgh now have CCTV installed, with one of the cameras facing forwards and another looking out the door. Not sure what First have, but I agree it’s worth reporting.

Where is all this happening? I don’t get to race anyone on my way to Bruntsfield from Leith in Edinburgh [:(] I saw someone on a Willier and thought i’d get a bit cocky and zip past him, but he turned off at the next lights, boo.

Although i do suspect i’m a bit of a ‘target’ for others, fully lycra’d up with a racer… I would try to overtake me.

Noted. Do you go up Bruntsfield Place? If so, I’ll be waiting at the Morrison Street lights for you.

2nd Applecross, but isn’t it likeley to become OTT given the new TV coverage?

Applecross is quite a hike for a weekend, even flying into Inverness. What is the new TV coverage you speak of, out of interest?

molgrips, you could always take a look at Special Places to Stay for some inspiration, although I can’t recommend any, sorry.

@miketually — I can’t get to Twiiter at work either, but for some reason I can post using TwiiterBar in Firefox. Not sure if that is an anomaly in our filter, or the way TwitterBar publishes.

I read Twitter using the RSS feed, in Bloglines. Finding the address of that feed to read was a royal pain in the neck, and it has to be in this form: http://username:password@twitter.com/statuses/friends_timeline.atom . Give me a shout if you need any more detail.

MikeT-23, allyharp — out of interest, are these the routes in the other magazine here? Linky The intermediate route looks the same as one a certain small Trails book … which I rode at the weekend.

Seconded on the Milton washing — much cheaper than the Camelbak stuff, although be sure to rinse it well, otherwise it can taste a bit funny.

If the hose is black, take it off the bladder, and stick something through it. I’ve got a long, thin brush that gets rid of all the gunk. That seems a better idea to me than replacing the tube, ‘cos once you have a brush you can clean the tube after each use instead of letting gunk build up again.

Sports Tracker definitely gets my vote. I’ve been using a Forerunner 201 for the last four years, and whilst it’s great, I really wanted to be able to do live tracking for both safety and so that my girlfriend/support cyclist can come and meet me on longer runs.

I use ST for tracking my daily ride to work too, which is quite interesting (for me). If you’re looking for a GPS tool, then it’s definitely worth checking out the latest Nokia/Symbian software. Accuracy seems good, although on my last longer run, my phone showed a distance of 14.3 miles compared to my watch, showing 16 miles.

As has been said above, you need to be running the latest and greatest version of firmware to get maximum battery life and fastest A-GPS.

@kennio You needed to search for ‘sportstracker’ [all one word]. Here’s the link to the other thread.

Damn, the normal weather forecast(s) were looking OK for that area… Perhaps better to head south/east, but the train options are a bit limited in that direction. :-S

We go without a car, using the City Car Club or else hiring when we need one. If there’s a car club near you, it would definitely be worth checking. Works well in Edinburgh. Link.

If travelling up to Aviemore is such a hassle, why not jump on the train. Early evening train from the south west to London, then get the sleeper at 21.15 arriving at Aviemore 7.40am the next day. If you need to, hire a car at Aviemore. Reverse for going home. Maximum time riding, minimal hassle. Train info here.

I’ve not done this, but it looks a decent way of going. If you book well ahead of travelling, it shouldn’t be too expensive.

I use a CamelBak Cloud Walker (link) which does me well, and I’m carrying a similar amount to you. Laptop goes in a sleeve at the back, clothes go into one of these Eagle Creek ‘cubes’ and then lunch goes at the top. My D-lock goes inside at the back, and cable right at the top.

It would be a push to get shoes in too, but I’ve done it before. I leave mine under my desk, or else have squashable shoes if I must carry them.

The bag doesn’t say it’s waterproof, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised that it has dealt with the worst Scottish weather has thrown at it.

If you’re going on dark roads, you might want to put a reflective cover over it, which would also deal with the waterproofing aspect.

I’ve got the forks that came with the bike, Fox 32 Vanilla R 140mm. They do sometimes feel a little floaty, but I’m getting used to them. Sorry, I can’t really compare against anything else.
