& yet the UK has one of the lowest death rates [on the road] in Europe
certainly lower than the already mentioned Germans & FrenchThe fact that there are more cars per capita and congestion is more noticeable in the UK has a role to play here – slower cars, less deaths. France is a bigger country, fewer people, and relies a lot on "fast" A road equivalents, regions over there have avoided the temptation to dual carriageway everything. So in the same way the notorious roads in the UK for deaths are the fast country roads, in a country where proportionately more journeys are done on such roads, they have a higher death rate.
Germans death rate increased when it was unified, and the eastern germans just were not used to faster cars than Trabbies and faster, well built roads.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberMy dog got depressed when I was in hospital last summer. Off food, lazy, seeking affection/reassurance.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberToo much freaking fashion in our sport. I've gone peakless on my helmet (roadie style) and will be fitting some old Onza CWA bar ends on my riser bars soon. Sod the fashionistas who dictate the style, I'm getting too old for that, I just want practicality.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberAgree, the fireworks are taking the piss at new year now, is it just me or have they only occured since the fabled millenium new year?
One thing I noticed a lot of around here last night was the paper lanterns going up. Really nice. A peaceful start to the year, and they burn for ages, so those needing to send something into the sky could use those, and not expend ££££s on a quick whiz bang.
My dog (stupidly) likes fireworks and sits watching them.

For some reason lane discipline is quite good when there's 2 lanes,Sadly, not in the UK I feel.
We travel to france usually a couple of times a year and many french autoroutes are two lane. Hogging lane 2 just doesn't happen, but north of Paris, when it does, it is usually a GB-plated car (often a cock-mobile like a BMW/Audi) doing over a 100mph. Same cars are often seen at the next toll area with the driver having a shat in the company of a gendarme. LOL!!
Although British drivers seem to be very critical of the rest of the world when it comes to driving, that doesn't seem to apply on multiple lane roads.
My father-in-law is a true middle lane driver, the type who only uses lane 2 on the slip road, then joins a motorway/dual and is immediately out into lane 2, whether it is safe or appropriate to do so. I've told my wife I'm not going to be driven by him again after he took us to Manchester airport last year, and when we got there confided in me that "I'm feeling a little spaced out, I think it's my pain tablet the doctor has got me on for my back…….". Took a taxi home after that little gem!
missingfrontallobeFree MemberIt was a bit long winded, I liked the SFX, but the story was too prolonged with the luvvyy duvvyy kind of stuff. Agree the aircraft design was good, looked like some of the designs from Aliens, did James Cameron have involvement with that as well?
missingfrontallobeFree MemberWhen I was diagnosed with epilepsey (secondary to a brain tumour) last year I discussed this issue with my neurologist. He felt that the issue of photo-sensitivity is somewhat over-rated, and told me what films he&7 his sones had been to see recently, and which he enjoyed. Really wierd as he looks a lot like Monty Burns from the Simpsons, but character wise he is a brilliant guy.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberGutted, saw him years ago when he was supporting Kristen Hersh on tour, very sharp witty guy. Sad
missingfrontallobeFree MemberWould likely be using it off the ward, but the issue with phones & hospitals is very overplayed – the hospital in question doesn't have a problem with mobiles anyway, those hospitals that do are often those with the extortionate "patient line" type contracts anyway. robably more likely to use it on the outpatient visits TBH.
£15 a month isn't bad, is it?
missingfrontallobeFree MemberThanks Goan, she is so numb she can't understand her "well meaning" actions are discriminatory. Still, op, chemo & radio means another period of time away from her!! Every cloud…….
missingfrontallobeFree MemberGot a double CD of Xmas carols a couple of weeks ago – as a birthday present :? Birthdays in december are shite :(
But the clincher has to be a plastic file with a hand written "mobile office" on the front from my **** of a work colleague who has been nothing but **** discriminatory since my diagnosis of a brain tumour and associated symptoms of memory loss. Seeing as my appointment on Xmas eve showed regrowth of the tumour needing surgery, chemo & radio she'll be **** lucky if she has a **** job to go back to
missingfrontallobeFree MemberIf you've not already done so, then yes, consider getting her seen. Remember that an axilla temp can be up to 1 degree lower than an oral temp, so she may be pushing 40 deg in reality.
Ring your GP practice and go through to the out of hours service, all that NHS
directredirect will tell you to do is see a doctor, so cut out the middle man.missingfrontallobeFree MemberRusty outer plates are cosmetic and will happen on a bike ridden in winter conditions on gritted roads.
Rollers & pins need to be lubed, if they are the rusty part of the chain then that is a bad thingI've found that the more expensive chains (usually silver coloured) resist rusting more than the cheaper chains, but on my winter road bike I fit the cheapest Sachs chain i can get in October, run it through the winter with very little TLC except running it through a rag regularly and re-lubing it and then leave it until the following October when I put a new chain on again (doesn't get much use in the summer). Not killed the drivetrain (yet)
missingfrontallobeFree MemberI renewed a mobile phone contract last year, had the offer of a PS3 with it, seemed like too good an offer to miss to acquire the PS3 then "send" it off to Santa for safekeeping! Tight or what!
missingfrontallobeFree MemberSense of humour is individual.
Saw Russel Howard at the Liverpool Arena last week, filled the venue, and he was funny.
As for writing all his own stuff, does any comedian? Besides, he has been touring and doing the BBC3 show at the same time.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberWe had cavity wall insulation done earlier this year (free under local authority scheme) and feeling well chuffed with myself for s=geeting something for nowt told anyone who'd listen. Two people both told me on seperate occasions that a house as young as mine shouldn't have cavity wall insualtion done, nad that the cavity is needed to allow the breexze blocks to breath. We've not had massive problems with condensation, but certainly more noticeable on the windows this winter than last winter.

How do you free up a frozen freehub/wheel?
Take it indoors
Or when outdoors just piss on it.

i had some GU10 led bulbs, found them to be rubbish (dimmer, much colder light) than the equivilent halogens so I swapped them back.+1. Got them in the bathroom. Horrible blue-ish light, really dim. Intend to swap back to halogens in the new year.

http://www.bikehike.co.uk/mapview.php?id=28018Not mine and only ridden parts of it but looks good. Try a search on there for malham too there's a few routes. Nice riding round there – not much that's too technical ime but enough to be interesting and very scenic.
Agree with the route to & from Settle, ridden similar route several times.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberMy LBS isn't on that list, but that doesn't bother me. What does is the presence of Evans, surely next year they'll just have half the list full of Evans stores if all it depends on is number of staff and Cytech training.
My LBS is a family run affair, that employs another 4 guys, all of whom have worked there for some time. Service is excellent, range stocked is good, prices good. That make it number 1 on my list.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberShimano cable cutters. The only ones you'll need for a lifetime of biking. Bought mine about 15 years ago and they cost about £40 then. Not looked to see what they cost now, no need to.
They're the only bike tool I've got which I've never lent out to anyone. I've even warned my 9 year old if he ever uses them for anything other than cables, I'll castrate him with them…..
missingfrontallobeFree MemberThe person filming that is a fanny, why they didnt warn people or call the police is beyond belief, or perhaps they were the police?
+1. If they've got enjoyment from watching people skid out and risk injury to themselves & others, the next thing is they'll be placing metal girders across railway lines…..
missingfrontallobeFree MemberDo Hope still advise lots of mud & water to bed pads in? Always worked for me anyway.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberThatto Cycles is my LBS and I've used the online BikesYouLike as well – sometimes there just isn't time to get there sadly.
Postal service is pretty good, within 48 hours usually. Not had any problems with the half a dozen or so bits of kit I've ordered since September. I fully accept I'm biased, but I have no problems recomending the place either for a shop visit or online.
Family run, nice people, good workshop as well.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberOlympus SW camera. Shock and waterproof. Perfect for riding, boarding, basically any outdoorsy stuff. Small enought to fit into a small case and clip the case onto a Camelbak harness.
Current version is the mju Tough 800 or 1030, mines an older SW790 version.

..I have a long term neurological condition..
Lol. I think I know what it might be
Really? I wonder what gives it away?????? 8)
missingfrontallobeFree MemberI've has the swine flu jab (I work in healthcare & have a long term neurological condition) and other than a sore arm was fine. Had it on the thursday, was riding Gisburn that saturday. No illness, nothing. Didn't even feel "viral", which I've had happen with other imms & vaccs over the years.
As for testing it, it has had pretty much the same testing that occurs with every seasonal flu vaccine each year.
Age & immunity is interesting, there is a school of thought that says those over 50 (I think it is) may have a degree of immunity through exposure to similar strains that were around in the 1960's, whereas the younger population will have had no exposure.
Even if you passed the online test to be given tamiflu, unless you had H1N1 confirmed through testing, if you are in a high risk group you should still consider the immunisation.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberCommon decency & manners from a seller would suggest a refund.
I sold a singulator on here a few years ago under an old log-in, and I had bought it from someone on e-bay as a surly singulator, which is what I then advertised it as on here. When the buyer got it he instantly identified it as not being a Surly device (what a geek) and said he wouldn't have paid what I'd asked. Solution: offered him a half refund, which he agreed to, as when I looked on the Surly website it clearly wasn't a branded chain tensioner, but a generic, cheaper device.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberFirefly is superb, slightly different twist on sci-fi.
Agree that BSG was brilliant, middle series got a bit odd, but still a great storyline. I'm probably the only one who thinks that President Roslin is hot though…..
missingfrontallobeFree MemberSAw them on Jonathan Woss a couple of weeks ago, class act. Would really like to see them live.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberIf not trade, where does he get all his kit? **** it, someones just nicked my bike…………..
missingfrontallobeFree MemberAgree with SUperstar about "The Escape Artist", superb book, very moving in its content. Read it once, it is one I've never picked up again for all the right reasons, if that makes sense.
Other book is Chris Hoys, I read that last Xmas. Good read about everything up to Beijing.
missingfrontallobeFree MemberWere not the older Judy DH forks (about 1998) red & 100mm travel? Could it be some of those?
