My boss used to work on the same base as Lightnings, apparently one had a runaway engine situation that the pilot could not shut down and as the speed was picking up quickly he was ordered to eject. After ejecting it carried on in level flight reaching some very large mach numbers (which were quickly classified “and no don’t ask again sonny”) before crashing in the sea.

He also tells a story of the Vulcan that the apprentice nearly backflipped off the maintenace jacks whilst trying to be clever with the undercarriage…….eek.

Had a maverick (forerunner to the Joplin) and seriously unimpressed with its reliabilty. Currently got two i900rs, one approx 6 months old and the other about 2 years old. Both have been very reliable.

As a side note make sure you have some sort of mudguard protecting its stanchion, they need much less servicing if you fit one.

Have to say unless the Mrs or pets were in danger I’d walk away from anything that I could’nt put out with a wet towel. Leave it to the “Grown Ups” to deal with.

Had the stove on a couple of times to check all OK after I swept the flue, no problems and toasty warm. Currently have a small rain forest to chop up.

Almax 4 + ground anchor and a couple of cable locks through the wheels to cause more time and effort. Also thinking of fitting the blank shotgun cartridge alarm.

Where I used to work constructed power transformers and most of the structural stuff was bolted together with 8.8 grade nuts and bolts. This included the nuclear blast (sorry very short term earthquake) resistant models we built for Faslane.

Used mine mumerous times, usually to extract blackthorns out of tyres, sort out a bent mech hanger and also to remove stuck pads. The knife also proves useful for cake divvying duties.

Know how he feels, two hours in "phone a friend mode" trying to sort out various issues from midnight last night and woken up at 0900 for another hour of armchair faulting. Just waiting for it to ring again now……….

Try a set of Irwin Records, they crop most motorcycle chains. Failing that scissor or bottle jack it open. Last resort, wedge the lock part against a solid thing and belt shit out of it with a hammer (eye protection a good idea at this stage), obvioulsy being careful not to ding the carbon.

Friston is riddled with good singletrack on the south downs but only if its dry.

From experinece the roads will be full of lost holiday makers not looking where they are going and frustrated locals doing warp 9 down narrow country lanes in cars with no ABS and probably a wiff of an MOT so venture onto the roads at your own risk! However these chaps maybe able to help out with off road stuff.

They have a few video's on you tube. I think most of the trails are a little bit north of Bude but last time I was there I did notice a promising bit of forest a bit inland on the A3079.

There is loads of good walking in the area, get a good OS map and take a walk from Millook to Crackinton along the cliff path, there are a couple of steep paths down to rocky beaches "The Strangles" south of Crackington Haven is a good challenge. Other good beaches are Sandymouth (Nat trust parking so expensive if its only a short stay) and Duckpool which is free.

Electric underfloor is OK so long as you only use it to take the edge off the coldness of the floor. My problem is that the stat control is tucked away behind the sofa next to a mains socket and one of our ferrets took a liking to the rubber of the stat adjuster and had a go at it, so for a few months over winter our floor was running at 23C which led to a rather hefty bill.

We have a staff who loves coming out, 15 miles is about his safe max. As others have said the dog will keep running till he drops so be careful.

As for training, lots of short rides around a local field drumming in recall and heel/close training. If it gets excited then put it back on the lead till it calms down. If it walks in front of you just ride into it(slowly), same if it stands across your path, its a dominance thing so make it get out of your way, even if that means a collision. It will soon learn not to get in the way and be bike aware. Consistency and being pack leader is key.

I usually do a 9 mile flog-myself-to-death-session on the onespeed that kills me and the dog just shrugs it off.

Had a Maverick till it broke the second time (seat clamp broke- twice), now on a KSi900 which went back under warranty just after I got it due to a manufacturing defect. Other than that its great, survived two large offs and winter muck no problem(just run a mudguard).

Mate's got one thats about 2 maybe 2.5 years old, heavily used and when he sent it for a service they replaced most of the internals for just the standard service fee and it was a quick turnaround as well.

I love my uppy downy posts, probably gonna get another i900 for my freeride rig(as I cannot wait for the rockshox jobbie)

Yep, great bike, feels like a mini quake DH, tackles singletrack fine, the only niggle is it does not climb as well as a TREK EX

Even Firefly Shermans had to get well within the very lethal radius of the Tigers main gun to have a chance of a kill and usually then it would only be to knock a track off.

Shermans were known as "Ronsons" as just like the lighter they "light first time (they were hit) every time".
