WANT WANT WANT

I’ve been eyeing the RASE for a year or more for the big bike. Still not had the guts to splash the cash on one yet. :?

I wish I had known about the Forca 18 months ago (for the sake of argument, if it was available) as it looks perfect for my current needs. About to move though, so no debits for me :-(

at some point an ‘honest’ cyclist has to knowingly buy/sell-on or in other words ‘launder’ the parts

I doubt it is as clear cut as that. I’d have thought that there is continuum of ‘cyclists’ buying 2nd hand, from ‘blatantly knowing’, through ‘ask-no-questions’, ‘gullible’ etc. all the way up to ‘honest’

In my experience I’ve met ‘cyclists’ from all of the above demographics.

The last time (September) I used the East Coast website, you could book bikes online, even with Virgin. It’ll reject the booking if there is no bike space. Occasionally it’ll reject the booking if one leg of the journey does not require bike space to be booked, but then it’s a case of splitting the journey in two.

Their website is actually awesome. I think it’s the only site I’ve ever searched out for a feedback form to tell them that, and guess what, it was even easy to give them feedback. Genuinely impressed with them.

How much time have you got? Could you not find someone to replace you

We could, but it’s subject to their approval. And given the number of empty apartments they have this year, there’s no reason for them to accept a change of lease over potentially leasing out a new one, at a premium for a short term contract, no less.

Just tell them you are being deported.

Well, we would be deported if she left her job and we didn’t leave the country… can’t find anything the code that deals with deportation though. :?

just phone em up and do a deal – say 3 months’ rent

Don’t have any leverage to do a deal, I suspect they’d want the full 6.

Thought it’d be something like that :?

Edit: I wonder if she could get them to alter the employment contract to state a different place of work, given that she might end up finishing some work when we’re back in the UK…

Looks a bit like a photoshop paintbrush filter applied to a photo to me…

allway’s remember that if you came last that you have an entire field of riders that are happy that you filled that spot

They might be nice

Disagree. Much as I like Assos stuff, these are gopping, cost irrelevant – I wouldn’t buy them if they were £5.

I don’t think I’ve ever gone into a shop for one thing and left with something completely different instead of the correct thing. Tend to buy both things…

I know people who have gone into the LBS for a chainring and left with a full bike. Either he was super materialistic or that was one good salesman. Dunno if he bought the chainring…

I raced once. I came last after crashing. I vowed never again.

I raced again. I came last after crashing*. I vowed never again…

Despite making a complete tit of myself both times, it was actually good fun. I just made sure I was aware of the faster bods behind me, and didn’t take it too seriously.

*technically I beat one person. He got a puncture and walked down.

where will you be renting?

Cambridge or Ely

edit: militant biker damn you..
My excuse is I only know about exeter – and a small corner of it, north of the river, east side, lots of rental property available here, not enough tenants, we are constantly having to raise our game to compete. I actually have no idea about the rest of the country.
Actually national stats like that pee me off as they don’t reflect what happens here at all and are no bloody good as a guide for working out what to do next.

Sorry, I didn’t mean it as an attack. :D

Yeah, national stats; London skews so many statistics that it’s far from ideal.

I only know this as I’ve been reading up. I’m about to be a renter in the UK again (and a landlord to my brother) and I’m not sure what to expect. Last rented ~5 years ago. :?

Re: Wart treatment. I had one on my finger frozen by the doc – it grew back quickly and I couldn’t be bothered going back. Tried the over the counter freezing kits, they were rubbish. Spoke to a doc friend from school, who advised testing my pain threshold, as that was the best way to get them out. (Doc gave up too soon, as I went way beyond the time people normally tell them to stop…)

So I used a drill bit, held in pliers, heated on the kitchen gas burner and applied until the drill bit went cold. Repeated again a few days later. End result, no wart & no scar. :D

Wouldn’t need much leverage, those Kryptoflex cables are criminally easy to slice through

Fair enough! Never tried myself…

I bought some Philips SHC 8525 for ~£50, to use at the office, so range wasn’t an issue. (Having said that, they would cover about 1/8 mile) Comfy to use, sound quality was perfectly acceptable, but no idea if an audiophile would think so…

Think I changed the rechargeable batteries once in ~3 years, after they stopped making it right through the day.

Saw some fellow brits gooning around in Morzine on the Saturday night shortly after arriving. One of them ended up ovalising the bolt holes on his swingarm doing some drops – bike hadn’t been put together properly after its journey. He spent most of the week looking glum whilst being sat in cafes.

Was anyone taking photos? When I have been out on photoshoots, wearing ‘normal’ MTB gear does a great job of making you blend into the background…

Wait until the mud dries. Brush off* Chain bath. Lube.

*Onto hardwood floor and then sweep up if the wife is out. Outside if she’s in or imminently returning :-D

Downham Market does have decent prices, but we’d lose a fair chunk of that on extra commuting costs I reckon. Wouldn’t rule it out for somewhere to move to in time though.

Thanks

Again – thanks to all for the valuable info.

reluctantwrinkly – what’s Cherry Hinton like as a place to live? Is it mainly a dormitory for the city, or does it have a life of it’s own?

Stugus – thanks, YGM.

I lived in Ely for a few years I wouldn’t recommend it.

For which reasons Ogg?

Thanks tails, been on a few job sites, but that one looks good. Unis, yep – I’ve already been searching them, and Anglia Ruskin. My BIL works for a uni as an accountant, but gets the long uni holidays. It appeals!

What’s your current job Militant biker?

I used to be an in-house graphic designer. In the US I’ve been volunteering as a graphic designer and trailbuilder due to visa restrictions. Looking for graphic design and artworker type of jobs.

reluctantwrinkly – thanks for that, I’ve had a wee look at them online. Biking and Pub – sounds like my kind of group! Is it a separate entity to the Mutts Nutts?

Currently I live in Delaware, USA, it’s “flat” but there is enough grade to make for some good riding.

lots of good pubs & eateries

In the short term, it’s going to be all about saving pennies, until I can get a job (easier said than done these days…)

check out the prices beforehand as it can add up

£3 return from Waterbeach, 6-10 mins, £6 from Ely, 16-25 mins. I’ve been doing homework :-D

I’ll add Histon and Impington onto the list of places to consider, although the train option is still looking like a good bet.

Whereabouts will your wife be working?

The station isn’t that close to the centre of town

She’s going to be working at the top of Hills Road, about a half mile from the station. I might be able to persuade her to take up cycling again, as she hates hills, so should be fine in Cambridge!

avoid towns on the London lines

Is that both to the north (i.e. Waterbeach, Ely) or just to the south (Shelford)?

Lots of active cycle clubs – both MTB and road

:D

Grizla, Stumpy – that’s the local knowledge I’m after! Thanks!

Had been looking at the park and rides, but will investigate the busway.

Singletrack. Yeah, I figured it’s not going to be great riding wise, but it’s a job offer we couldn’t refuse. Accepted I’m going to have to rely on driving a distance to go ‘mountain’ biking.

It’ll be a bit weird once it’s gone, the cafe’s always been part of it.

Except originally, there was no cafe, no bike shop, just a car park and changing room. And the trails were still awesome back then. The Hub was the icing on the cake, but you can still have great cake without icing.

Yeah, it worked in Chrome for me too last night, but not the first time I tried it :?

It’s a shame that the 25k is just a link out to Streetmap. Would have been nice to have that in there too.
