Always seem to be older langsters coming up on eBay. What are they like as commuters in terms of mudguards and racks? Proper mounts?

Not really enough room for proper mudguards – hence my SKS raceblades in the picture above.
I have had a rack on it in the past for commuting and a bit of touring. (No idea where the rack is, I think I might have lent it to someone…) I had to do a bit of trimming on the chain tug to get the rack to clear it, the mounts are quite close to the axle.

Had mine for ~7 years now, this is the original geometry version, apparently. Been running it fixed for 6 years. Used to have 48:18 but moved to an in-town commute with lots of stop/starts, so dropped it to a 42:18. It’s had a new pair of wheels, and it’s onto it’s 3rd drivetrain. 4th set of bottom bracket bearings too.

Love it. Total beast of burden; it gets shown little love. And it still works.

I believe the algorithm changed in the last few weeks, so sites have been moving around a lot of late.

RS8s on UN7? on the SS, and no-names on a TA Axix on the commuter.

Only BB I ever bent was an ISIS. And did it twice. Swapped to Saints. XT HTII bearings were lasting me about 3 months before I switched to Hope and got 3 years out of them before selling for £30.

I’ve always found one half link makes a massive difference to chain tension, and one was always enough when I used to have a tensioner.

I run a UN7? on the MTB and a TA Axix on the road bike. Although it’s the standard TA one, not the Ti version , which is the only one that Chicken seem to stock these days. The TA Axix is very nice – just tap off the old bearings and press on new ones when they wear out.

Nothing here too. I’ve signed up to take my mother and the trouble and strife to Chelsea Flower Show, which is that weekend. I had it in mind, then promised them we’d go, then re-checked the date :-(

What bearings do they use?

Nothing fancy, last set were 619032RSR for about £10 each. Got ~4 years out of them in a winter bike.
Currently running some Kaesae specials in there.

RJ Chicken used to import a TA Axix bottom bracket that takes ordinary cartridge bottom bracket. They only appear to have the Ti axled version for £154 now. Dunno if you could trace one of those (I’ve got the bog standard one in my hack bike)

Can of de-icer, lock sized, is small enough to carry around. Not exactly environmentally friendly, but works a treat. A pre-spray of cleats and pedals before setting off works well too.

I went with CraigW’s linked ID 6.5mm bolts from Charlie too.

Don’t get ‘superlight’ bolts. In my experience they look good, but then snap too easily.

Buffs and their clones. Bought one, wore it for about 2 minutes, gave it away. Horrible around my neck, sweaty, itchy and a right faff to take off.

I just do up the collar on my jacket, which covers the same area. And can be undone whilst riding along when I get too hot.

Assos 851 AirJack – bought about 5 years ago in a sale, transformed my winter riding. Looking a bit bobbly around my waist from daily commuting with a rucsac on, but still works perfectly.

Looks weird though. Especially when coupled with 851 bib longs. And 851 gloves. But toasty for minimal bulk.

Edit. And Sealskinz socks.

I got Spotify Premium free for 6 months with my Virgin broadband. Bit of a hassle as I already had Premium, so had to downgrade first and then upgrade.

My Bionicon comes with X-Fusion inverted forks (with extra Bionicon bits). Seem to work pretty well – massively chunky legs and sliders and a 36mm axle keeps them stiff :-)

The mountain biking around Darvel is very good with some locally buildt XC and DH trails on both sides of the valley. The XC trail is about 23kms long with only about 2km on connecting roads.

Really? I would have killed for that when I lived outside Darvel (straight across the valley from Loudoun Hill)
I don’t tend to go back to the Irvine Valley much apart from Christmas or New Year to see the folks. Spent a week in Newmilns last New Years. Either it has got A LOT worse in 10 years, or I just never saw how bad it was.

We used to go riding in Sorn when I was about 17! I think i’ve got a video of us somewhere

Me too! Lorimers I think my friends used to refer to it as?

I’ve used http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/%5B/url%5D in the past, but now email Kaesae of these parts. Been running his bearings in my White Industries hub for a couple of years (OEM set lasted 6 months). All seems good.

I could choose which folders in Settings > Mail, Contacts etc. > [account] > Mail Folders to Push

If there’s no options for ‘Mail Folders to Push’ you might be out of luck. I’m not certain – but it may only be Exchange accounts that can ‘push’. Exchange was the only way I could get my filtered email to arrive (I used to filter on the MBP too, but now do it with Google Apps – much better)

YES! I modified mine to fit the extra width. Took it apart, stuck the roller in a vice and used a hacksaw and file to widen the groove. Worked like a good-un for a number of years until I got a track-ended frame.

Yep – fixed with panniers and bar bag on 23c on some reasonable singletrack in Northumberland, and road bike on 23c through a bit of mud when I made a poor route choice the other weekend. It’s all doable, carefully.

I went for a butt ugly Trident Cyclops II case. Phone sits in a silicone skin, held inside a hard outer case. Silicone also covers the port and headphone socket for completeness. £27 on Amazon. Would recommend despite the chunky appearance.

First case I got was a beautifully minimal bamboo sleeve. Was so slick I kept dropping the phone – and it broke quickly. Erm…

Santander from an old A&L account. No keypad, but a passcode sent to a phone to set up anything new.

Used to have some Assos Roubaix Mille bib 3/4, which were more comfortable than practically any other pair of shorts I’ve ever used – more so than my FI Unos, FI Milles and FI.13. When they eventually wore out, I was no longer working in a bike shop, so ‘slummed it’ and bought Castelli Sorpasso 3/4. I’m regretting it. They’re just not as good; I could wear the Assos all day – 3 hours in the Castellis finish my bum off.

So, in my opinion – Yes. Assos totally worth it.

I run a Home Brewed Components one. Didn’t wait as long as the above – right on a month, but that was when I was living in the USA.

No better nor worse. Sits there. Does its job. Looks pretty.

I go for VNC, but my recommends are all Mac based – Vine Server on the Mac mini upstairs, Chicken of the VNC on the book downstairs and MochaSoft VNC Lite app on the iPhone.

It can be set up to work locally or via the net.

http://sourceforge.net/%5B/url%5D will probably have Windows equivalents.

I have a pathetic peak flow (~350-450, as opposed to ~600), but my asthma doesn’t come into play when I ride.

Aerosols, dust, incense sticks & cats screw me up. Cold doesn’t too much. Tis a weird beast this asthma.

Whilst I like the lack of extra faff around the post, a single tag to replace ‘Member’ could work.

How about providing a user with a selection for them to choose their own from? Tags available and number of choices could be defined by your criteria – more choice for more established members say. Bespoke choices could be added for the ‘spoon wrangler’ etc.

Got an ’09 frame built up with 100mm forks, flat bars and a short stem. It became my main bike when I moved to the flatlands, and it’s been flawless. A few war wounds here and there, but holding up nicely.

Love. It.

Well, I bought a couple of cheapish ‘works with iphone’ chargers. One continually disconnected and reconnected, and the other just didn’t work. Ended up with a Griffin Power Jolt Duo
