Plus, by buying Assos you get 1 millionth of a percent closer to getting somewhere with that girl in the catalogue…

    LOL!

My tuppence is that they fit me perfectly. Older Equipes are quite snug, but the F1 Mille_S5 is noticeably thinner, lighter and more comfy. Am tempted by the new Castellis though. Also, the new Endura Equipe stuff looks pretty good, and judging by the build quality and materials I've seen so far, their shorts could be a winner.

    I'm interested – assuming self-catering? Flying out?

Hmmm, I know the VED 'classic' status cutoff date stopped advancing when it got to ~1978 or thereabouts, so 80's cars don't qualify for zero tax. Is insurance different?

I'd be interested to know cos I got an '87 AX (which is shortly to become a track car)

Bought from them 3 1/2 years ago – offered me one price for a modified kit on their instant chat, and a higher price when I phoned to purchase.
Also, the camera was a Euro model, which I assumed would be the case at the price, but came with no manual – so I had to use cunning to extract a manual from the manufacturers website.

Would I use them again? Only if the price saving was the be-all and end-all of a purchase.

Bionicon Ironwood – great for dealing with the potholes on my ride to work.

(it does fall outside of the £1000 budget however… ;) )

Anybody try Glentress today? Last updates on the Hub's site and 7 Stanes site are a few days old, wondered if there was any improvement?

Thanks for all the advice. Going to wait until the weekend and some daylight to go checking above stuff. Luckily I have another car to get to work in (injured hand stops me from riding to work :( )

    finishthat – thanks – that's one I'll check later!

Sunday wobbler – great info, much appreciated. My main headache is why the alternator appears to kick out lots of volts initially, but then drops away – would a knackered voltage regulator be a cause of that?

My (limited) understanding is that the regulator keeps the output voltage above that of the battery, but decreases amperage as the battery recharges. If it was faulty, could it somehow drop the voltage as well, which would drain the battery, and cause the light to come one as well?

    Thanks for the help folks!

The battery is 2 1/2 years old, but seems to hold charge well enough. The car isn't used much, but always starts well enough considering. I was running it on bare minimum load for the drive, just lights.

user-removed – where would I prod with a multimeter to check an earth wire – my guess is resistance between the body and the battery should be zero if the wire is fine?

I gave up on the Mighty Mouse and the scroll ball, would clean it out and it would jam up within a week.

I now use a Logitech MX400 Great if you don't mind wires, and it has more buttons than the Mighty Mouse.

Commuted on the bike every day so far, but switched from fixed road bike on 23c's to big mountain bike with 2.5"s. Slow, but fun. Oh, and neither of my cars will move until a thaw comes.

Got pulled over and interviewed by Sky News this morning "Why are you cycling?" Should be on tonight's news :)

I could be tempted by this. I'm busy at work all of Feb, so could only do a 'regular' weekend. I also get free accomodation in Windermere…

I'll second that – selection of sockets and a vice. Vice very useful/near essential!

One technique that used to work on my Manitou was to start the old bush moving with a socket and then use the new bush to press it right through. With care.

Assos Early Winter gloves worked in Edinburgh, longer at the wrist to plug the gap to the jacket.

My old Sealskinz died the other week and became worse than normal socks – accumulating water. However, a new pair sorted the problem. Riding through frozen puddles and snow at GT last night, splashes freezing on the downtube, wearing 3/4's and Sealskinz with normal shoes – feet toasty warm. Superb.

Interestingly, I managed to massively improve my neoprene Endura road overshoes by spraying them with Juice Lubes fork juice…

Ummm. Don't think there was one in the EBC catalogue, at least, not recently. If it was there – I would have done the images for it!

The Mavic stuff does look good – thanks!

15 mile round trip for me, normally 4 days a week. 1 day a week I take the car in to work so we can go night riding straight after.

Normally 1 bottle of £4 wine in each shop (for cooking you understand), and perhaps a couple of glasses of malt at home per week (£3) + one night out a month (average night £10 – wife doesn't really drink and we don't stay out late).

I reckon £10 per week should cover it.

Cause my old bike died and the new one ticked just about every box I required. Oh, and it timed nicely for our bike-to-work scheme. Staff discount AND tax-back makes it half price :)

    8" travel F&R
    front mech compatible.
    lighter than 38lbs
    ridable up and down hill.

    It's a Bionicon Ironwood.

I grew up in the Irvine Valley, east of Killie. Further from the commute corridor, but less depressing than Kilmarnock. That said, I rarely go back, even though my folks still live there.

Oh, and I never found any decent riding in the area.

And I'm packed up and ready to leave the carpark 15 mins earlier

Ah yes, but you are the king of faff! For normal people I reckon the difference would be about 5 :D

These guys had good reviews, and I've used them a couple of times. Excellent service – they hand colour correct photos IIRC, and cheap if you're having ordering a number of items (reasonably large P&P cost)(A3 = £4.20)

You could use Nitro Mors :) I've cleaned the decals off an old frame with that. It's potent stuff though.

There are cheap multi-tools everywhere, so whenever you need to work on something there's one within reach.

Player always loaded with a bike DVD for breakfast time.

Cupboards full of value malt loaf.

Light charger gets it's own socket.

You can't walk around in bare feet for risk of standing on bearings, cable ends, rotor bolts etc.

Bank statements read like the yellow pages' Cycle Shops section.

You could draw the route into http://www.mapmyride.com and it can give you a profile, max height and height gain. It runs off Google maps so is better suited to roads rather than tracks…

It's a bit late but the shape of the letters is Junegull, a Larabie font which is free. Not sure if the shading is part of the font.

Not sure if it works for verukas – this works on warts

Get a drill bit. Heat it up on the gas ring of the cooker. Apply to skin and hold it on for a few seconds/until you can't stand the pain. Repeat.

This got rid of a pesky wart on my finger that had resisted all freezing treatments by the doc and over-the-counter treatments. But saying that – I have a stupid high pain threshold, so it may not work if you are easily 'pained'.

    And there's no scar.

I found a phone today too. Tried phoning 'husband' and 'home' and left a message saying I'd take it to the local station. Couldn't get to the station fast enough – for the reasons alluded to above. Handed it in and got to leave without giving details.

And I was on the other end earlier this year, dropped the phone in the street, rang it when I discovered it missing and spoke to the finder who handed it in to the police. It took quite a bit of work to prove the phone was mine before I could get it back.

excludes those with a saddle below a certain height.

What about bikes with no saddles? Like some trials bikes for instance…
