I’m occasionally finding the same/similar problem with Chrome. Browser ‘back’ seems to end with the ‘loading’ favicon spinning for ever, or until I stop it and click out to say “Forum”. But not every time, and with no “waiting for X” at the bottom.

Bring helpers. In my experience, it’s too easy to stop for too long when truly solo; I get on better with someone to help out, hand me food, bottles etc.

Try not to keep up with the team racers. In any race where the categories all are riding at the same time, it’s very tempting to keep up with people who aren’t needing to save themselves.

No heroics. Ok, I ride SS so this is more important for me. Sure I can make that tough climb normally, but I find I go better by backing off and saving my legs.

Yes, we’ve just started doing this, mainly as a reaction to spammers. The cutoff is currently set at one year from the date of the last post to the thread.

    Thought as much. Thanks!

Not when I look at yours!

you never really experience any twisting forces on a fork in use.

I’m not so sure – but with no real knowledge to back it up. What about hitting edges which aren’t perpendicular to the line of travel? Would they not work to push the wheel sideways, and therefore twist the fork?

    Argh – the hamsters ate my post! Try again;

I have a set of the X-Fusion DH/Bionicon Special Agent hybrid upside down fork, stuck to the front of my Ironwood. They get around the stiffness issue by running a massive hexagonal axle that mates to the bottom of the sliders, with the fork rods extending right through the axle into massive nuts on the lower side. The diameter of this axle means the BCD on the disc rotor is huge, so you have to use Rohloff intended rotors, as well as a custom hub. And to remove the wheel, you need to use something like a 5mm allen key sideways through the holes in the nut to turn them. They then call it a ‘quick axle mounting system’ or something laughable!

Stiff? Not really. Not as stiff in my experience as Boxxers. Plush? Yep. Heavy. Oh yeah.

Love it here. I downloaded content to my 2 iPhones, one a old 2G and a slightly less old 3G running iOS 4. Runs well on both, although it can take a wee while to load up on the 2G. I don’t get 3G here in the US, so I sync stuff in the house wi-fi and then use Spotify offline when walking to the shops.

As an aside, and for Chrome Users http://www.freshspotify.com/%5B/url%5D can alert you when new music from your specified artists is added to Spotify. Damn handy!

you have a lot of people around when you go night riding it seems.

Only one park here that sanctions night riding here, and then only once a month

As for the red rear lights on a night ride, nothing wrong with them, as long as they’re not flashing.

Plenty wrong with them on an off-road night ride! Distracting, even if on steady. As for the morons who have them on at night races after being specifically told not to by organisers

I have to say I’ve become a bit anal at matching socks and shirt to the road bike. Gutted that I couldn’t get another S-Works 2D helmet in red and white after I broke the last one. Black or charcoal… :-(

Mountain bike usual garb is blue and yellow shirt with red Camelback. Keeping it primary at least.

I have pretty much the opposite view to toys19 – apart from the seat clamp which I’ve not used!

I could list all the parts I’ve had for years and how perfect they’ve been. Still doesn’t alter the fact that some people will love them and some will hate. Some will never service them and some will have to fettle them endlessly. Me, I never service and never fettle, and Hope works for me.

Seriously, daft idea. SS is *most* annoying DH!I’ve had the dubious pleasure of riding IA’s DH bike on occasion. He has very odd ideas of bike set-up!

    So ignore him

Another Conti user – I think mine are Ultragator Duraskins. The only problem I had was a piece of fencing wire going in the top and out the sidewall – that was a wasted tyre! The rubber compound on them seems to be a bit more winter friendly than the old Specialized ones I used.

Schwalbe Marathons are the bomb, but can be a really tight fit on certain rims.

What do you mean by 2.35 rims? If you mean, rims came with 2.35″ tyres on, fitting 2.5″ tyres will be fine. Some ‘2.5″‘ tyres are narrower than other ‘2.35″‘ tyres.

    Nice!

It’s happened to me – managed to find a 2nd hand Fox Van Coil in perfect length* in Les Gets, they made a fitting kit on the spot for me too.
Happened to a mate who exploded his Risse (spits) shock. He bought a 5th Element from TF , overnighted it to someone who was joining us for week 2, all good. The things we do to keep us riding!

*ok, it wasn’t perfect length; the stroke was too long, giving my bike about 9″ rather than 8″ travel :-)

The only way you can transfer them to your iPhone is via iTunes I’m afraid

    Or Winamp for a PC

    Or Spotify Premium

Do they only run 2-2.5mm into the crank, or they go through to about 2-2.5mm from the outside edge?

If the former – there’s something wrong and there isn’t enough supporting the crank. If the latter, sounds perfect.

    Militant_biker

a reasonable amount of taper on the bb not used.

Not sure if this is normal or not. I tried a few lengths and got the cranks to almost touch the shell (for chainline issues), so I can’t see if there is ‘spare’ taper. How far do the tapers run through the crank if you take the bolt out and have a look?

    Militant_biker
    Full Member

    Ah!

Depends what you mean by “too easy.” When I have fitted square taper cranks they just push on without much/any resistance, then the crank bolt pulls it all together and pushes the cranks up the axle.

    Militant_biker

Errr. Octalink is different to square taper! If it looks like a square hole, it’s not octalink.

    This is Octalink.

IIRC all square tapers use the same angle, so they should all work. On some designs the crank will move further up the axle as the tapers are slightly narrower. Have your cranks been used?

I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to fit the metal end, and then screw the plastic end in after. The metal end should be flat to the BB cup, the plastic end doesn’t always get there.

Edit – you sure you got the right length of shell?

I’ve got a 320gb and a 1tb Seagate Expansion Portable drives. Not had any problems with them, had the small one for a year and the big one 6 months.

Use the 320gb as a time machine backup on the mac, and the 1tb one for storing my dvds and old iTunes downloads, so neither gets really frequent use.

I read some worrying reviews about the power needed to power the big ones; suggesting you need a double USB cable to power it. I’ve not found that I do, and it actually doesn’t mount with the double cable that I use for the external DVD player.

but i would say font and colour have little bearing.

    Go on…?

Not being sarcastic; but have little bearing…on what? People’s perception of a product/advert/etc.?

You seem to believe that although marketing affects you, you can overpower its effect with rationale?

we all can. Do you buy everything that you have seen advertised or marketed without any discretion? I can sing the bodyform tune but have never bought them for example. Have you bought any? I assume you get the pointYes, I see what you mean. That’s a fairly easy effect to overcome, as a bloke!

My wording does make me sound sceptical. I wasn’t. I was seeking a bit of clarification of TJ’s view.

Oh thank god for that! I know I had a bit to drink last night, but sheesh – didn’t think I’d spouted that nonsense :o

    Militant_biker

So if those bits weren’t scaled back – you still include font style in with the specific areas and instances it makes no difference at all?

    Militant_biker
    Full Member

    could you be more specific?

Umm, not really as my memory is hazy! I think he bought things he didn’t need or plan to buy, or bought products that weren’t the best value, that kinda stuff. They cross referenced it with the eyetracker and showed his attention being drawn by their BOGOFs and shelf placement.

I wish I could find everything I’d ever read, watched and heard for times like this.

Indeed I can. I do not just believe this – I know I can as do many other people. – Not 100% effectively 100% of the time perhaps but the vast majority of the time.

I think I saw some telly a few years ago that took someone who thought they disregarded marketing and chose products on their own merits. Programme hooked him up to an eyetracker etc. and sent him off shopping. He fell for a fair few marketing ploys, much to his embarrassment. No way of finding that clip in the depths of the internet… :(

    In relation to the associating meanings of fonts;

    TandemJeremy – Member
there is no other information there

Suggests to me if there is no other information [than the words], then it can’t have any effect

    TandemJeremy – Member
There is no intrinsic meaning in one font over another. Non at all.

Again, fairly clear that’s you saying there is no meaning other than the words – ie not any effect

    TandemJeremy – Member
[the social construct] has no meaning beyond this in the general public at large

That’s pretty firm too. I’d say you had scaled back from that… :P

can tell the character of someone by the font they use and some of the other waffle

    Has anybody actually said this?

    Militant_biker

Overall it is of much s#less significance that the adherents would have you believe

I’m pretty sure it has the significance level as reported in those findings :P

Taking it seriously? Not fully; at the end of the day, I don’t really care about what you believe the magnitude of the effect of marketing is. But it is an interesting debate nonetheless. For one thing, it’s insightful what people believe they can and cannot control, in terms of how marketing affects them. You seem to believe that although marketing affects you, you can overpower its effect with rationale?

    Militant_biker
    Full Member

TJ – So what do you make of the papers posted previously which shows that it has a significant effect? Rather than saying “makes much less difference” (which I noted you scaled back from “makes no odds… at all” :-)) would you care to comment on that evidence that it does make a significant difference?

What’s with the astrology reference? Are you suggesting that marketing is akin to astrology? If so, I’m disappointed.

I liked these from when I started riding back in the day. Never ridden one so they might be total bobbins but I still would like one.
