Taxii25, I know the use of the word “rubbish” is a bit judgemental, but I’m genuinely increduluos that people still believe in religions. In my youth I imagined, given the state of our current knowledge, that belief in religion would wither and die. I know there’s lots of personal and cultural reasons why religion survives but would like to hear a religious person explain how they can maintain their faith

Think what most of us get from STW is community. Before the days of t’internet we were a disparate, isolated bunch connected by MBUK. Now we’re a disparate, isolated bunch connected directly to each other

Riding from Hucknall will be ok, look towards Annesley plantation then out through Newstead Abbey towards Theives Wood which will link you into patches of Sherwood Forest (what’s left of it). Also look to Bestwood Park. Moorgreen Woods has some decent woodland tracks but is mainly clay, unlike the sand that the other woods are based on. Nothing gnar or techie, go to the Peak for that

I’ve just replaced a zee rear mech because the shifting went v stiff in one direction. If it’s a new bike from a decent shop, they will sort. If not, as others have said, replace inner and outer. If it’s not that it’s yer mech

I started using a pair of knee length socks after I was given a pair in hospital. I’ve always had twitchy muscles after exercise and often restless legs at night after exercise too, and I have found the compression socks (Decathlon ones, replaced the nhs-issue ones) have all but eliminated these problems. I put them on after the sort of ride that would previously make me twitch and wear them until bedtime.

Sorry to hear you’re the victim not only of scumbags but police complacency. Make sure you keep checking on gumtree etc. When my son had a bike nicked local to your incident, it turned up on gumtree 3 or 4 weeks later, he posed as a potential buyer and informed the police, set up a meeting and the police turned up, nabbed the thief and he got his bike back. Good luck mate

Meridian also do a low salt marmite-type yeast extract that’s very tasty in stews, soups etc

    A couple of simple recipes;
Tomato sauce for pizzas, lasagne, spaghetti etc. Fry an onion in olive oil, add chopped red pepper, oregano and 2 tins tomatoes. Simmer for 15 mins.
You can adapt this sauce to make a chilli sauce by adding a chopped chilli or chilli powder and some red kidney beans to go with a baked spud.
Simple dahl. Cook a cupful of red lentils in 3 cups of water with a tsp salt. Cook slowly till lentils absorb water into a puree ( a bit of stirring). In a separate pan fry an onion, a chilli (chopped) a thumb sized piece of ginger finely chopped, 3 cloves garlic crushed and a 5cm piece of turmeric finely chopped. Add the lentil puree, stir well and simmer for 10 mins. You can of course substitute powdered turmeric etc but it won’t taste as good

The first couple of times I rode Snowdon was in April. I’ve been going there for years with outdoor pursuits groups, mainly in summer, usually in murky conditions on the summit. However in April we had pristine conditions with stunning views from the top. First day we did Railway path/Snowdon Ranger/Telegraph valley and had such fun we rode Rhyd Dhu the next day. Ridden it since at different times but never in such weather

My wife regularly walks up to 10 miles while I go biking, inc one similar to your route. She also suggests climbing Lose Hill from Hope, walking the ridge to Mam Tor then dropping onto the southern flank of the ridge to traverse back to Hope. Or from Ladybower, up onto Derwent Moor, following the ridge to Lost Lad before dropping down to the res and returning

Having lost all my fitness due to a 10 week layoff with illness I’m keen to get back to where I was, especially as I’m in the ‘use it or lose it’ years, so I set myself the goal of riding 3 times a week which I’ve kept to since Sept. Beginning to struggle to get out in the slop now but went out yesterday into that northerly and was rewarded with rock hard mud around my local trails. Slopping round the Peaks in the slush early tomorrow is looking unappealing atm though, so I might take the easy option and ride locally

We’re all in a minority of one aren’t we? Labels like “crazy” don’t help, that’s just other people’s unsympathetic judgement

My 10 year old Santa Cruz Superlight has seen most use this year as it’s my local woodland bike and is helping inspire me back to fitness after illness. My Bronson isn’t far behind but will always be used less because it needs techy trails to be worth riding and it’s pretty flat round here. Road bike only gets a look in if I get dragged out by mates, never my choice

I bought some yeti logo’d grips a coyple of years ago when I got tingly fingers doing day-on-day riding. Big raised logo is lovely soft and squishy and worked well with body geometry gloves

Those of you looking for a cause in OP’s actions, it doesn’t work like that, anxiety finds things to be anxious about. Good luck OP, I know from personal experience that these things can be overcome, hope that’s the case in your situation (if that’s what you want)

Got a 2008 Superlight I still use for my local woodlands ride. Forks on the way out and don’t know how I’m going to replace them but I’ll run it till it gets critical. Other old full sussers I’ve sold cheaply, usually to kids

When I got my last bike it came ready set up with tubeless. Ran it for 3 months before I discovered it had no sealant so it is possible if there aren’t any thorns where you ride (I ride Peaks)

I live in north Notts with bridleways a quarter of a mile from my door so usually in the week I’ll ride a couple of times locally then at the weekend I’ll drive to the Peak, so 66%-33%

Sorry, no gpx of routes, but if you’ve got an OS map of the area you can link some bits of woodland together which have some decent trails and are small enough to explore without getting too lost. You can park at either Bestwood Country Park, which has some of the best off piste tracks in the area and also has some gradient, or Burntstump Country Park for more direct access to Sansom Wood, Blidworth Woods, Watchwood, and can make your way to Harlow Wood and Thieves Wood for a cuppa at the Portland College cafe before returning, about a 15 mile loop if you go more or less direct, giving you scope to explore or nip back quickly if you run out of time. The woods are generally sandy so you’ll escape the worst of the slop of more open areas. Wish I was around to show you the best bits but I’m off to the Peak!

Mr potatohead, I’m 62 and having to scale down my expectations too, but even though I don’t go as far/fast as I used to I can still get a lot out of riding, not least that post-ride buzz that resets my mood for the better. While the return for the energy I put in is so good I’ll keep going

I was struggling to get out after an illness earlier this year, then remembered that, even when reluctant to ride you never ever regret it after, so I ignored the lazy sod inside and started again. Then I lazily drifted into just ticking over, so told myself I have to ride 3 times a week at least, and must focus on upping fitness ready for next Spring. 3 weeks into this latest regime and I keep coming back knackered from not much exertion, but I know in a few weeks I’ll start to see the benefits. Sometimes you just have to ignore your lazy side, and being as I’m at the ‘use it or lose it forever’ age, I can’t indulge the lazy git any more

Good work people in talking about this so openly, so many of us are affected and for every one of us who contributes to the thread there must be many more heartened to read of others’ experience/bringing a dark subject into the light. Jmatlock, it’s a bit dated now (just like me really) but I found the Spike Milligan/Dr Anthony Claire book a useful general guide (sorry, can’t remember the title)

This is exactly what I use my inbred for, it makes a perfect winter bike. Surprising how much fun you have when you don’t much care about the cheap kit you put on it

If it’s only a year old there shouldn’t be stanchion wear but it is due a service. The wear suggests problem with a seal, so muck gets in and causes the wear. Seals replaced on a service, so when you sort it it shouldn’t reoccur

I’d be into outdoors stuff, camping, hillwalking etc including owning a road/touring bike. None of this gives me the same buzz as a mountain bike ride in a mountainous area does, so I wouldn’t feel the same passion but my interests would be in this general area

I’ve had the one about swerving into the path of a lorry ever since I seriously considered it in a depressive episode about 20 years ago. Every so often the idea pops into my head, I think it’s just my mind scaring me with how easy it would be.
The other one that occurs to me is when I was in freefall down a railway bank (tried to ride it and got kicked otb at the top by a hidden stump). For some reason this was the moment I remembered that I hadn’t bought any mayonnaise when I was doing the shopping that morning

Some good responses, some of which I’ve used myself. Love the heart attack idea, reminds of one I used a few years ago when asked “..and how are you today, sir?”. I responded with “do you know, I’ve never felt so bad. In fact if this is another heartless b@$+@rd cold caller who doesn’t give a f%k about how I feel but just wants to sell me something I’m off to the knife drawer to top myself”. Generally though, I just don’t answer (door or phone) if I don’t know the caller
