Mansfield? Shacklocks impressed us with their bid for our new central heating, punctual, competitive. Didn’t use them in the end cos we went for someone a bit more local, bloke called Peter Taylor who you can Google too. He was reliable and did a decent job

Mine does that every time I check/adjust it, don’t think it’s a problem but then I’m guessing

I use the ‘liar ‘ response too. Wait for the first lie (Asian caller with English name, or ‘we’re not trying to sell you anything’etc), call them out and ask if they would have any time for a stranger who called and started telling lies

Got many different fun responses to cold callers, one of my faves is when they ask how are you today sir I say “I’ve never felt so bad, in fact if this is someone just asking how I am because they want to sell me something I’m going to go into the bathroom and kill myself”. Mostly though I know they are just poor sods with a crap job and don’t give them too much grief beyond a message to pass on to their bosses

Got a bike room downstairs and a couple more in the attic since the kids left home. Oh and wife who ‘gets it’ about bikes. Being a diginumpty I haven’t yet worked out how to post a photo on here. If anyone is interested enough to explain, please enlighten an old fart and you may get pics

It took two blokes a day to fit ours (had some mods to the fireplace etc too) and we paid £400 in labour out a total bill of £1600

We were running 1×9 like this before you could get 30t cassettes, 30t rings, clutch mech etc, needed chain guides though. Managed to ride most stuff in the Peaks that we had been riding with a double

Agree that fit is everything, I use Fox Launch, as much for the support when pushing cos I got old dodgy knees. Comfy, wear all day but needed a medium to get a decent fit, usually I’m a large

I first met her June 21st 1971. My brother was taking his girlfriend to a Wishbone Ash gig and dragged me along so his gf’s pal would have someone to talk to. I can remember exactly how she looked, what she was wearing etc which is amazing given I’m a bloke. Can’t remember a thing about the band except they were crap. I already had a gf and finished with her before starting a relationship with Sarah.
We split when I went to Uni because I was young and naive. After playing around I realised I’d messed up and wrote to ask her back. She ignored me.
Three years later I heard she was in town so I went to find her. That was 1978 and we’ve been together ever since

I’d avoid anything nonspecific for flatties, last year I got some Decathlon walking shoes for possible wet or rough conditions on the C2C. Soon as I tried them I knew I’d made a mistake, the soles slipped badly on pedals. Why does nobody make a reasonably robust, waterproof and grippy shoe for winter? Seems a no brainer to me, this is mountain biking, not playing down the skate park

6″ rain and high winds forecast. Luckily I’m retired so will sit it out (party Saturday night too) and ride Peaks on Monday when we have a brief respite before another stormy week next week

Good blog, that says it well. I’d also like to add that when we meet Mr Angry (he invariably seems to be male) it’s always worth engaging with him in a calm and reasoned way.I do on the rare occasions I’m challenged and something positive always comes out of it, even if it just expands his consciousness a little beyond his often narrow boundaries

Been taking glucosamine for a few years now, I’m 60 and have no cartilage in my left knee. I’m also veggie so don’t get much through my usual (healthy) diet. I reckon it has a positive effect but it’s such a long-term thing it’s hard to tell for sure. How do I know how I’d be without it? I tend to be sceptical about medication/supplements and occasionally stop taking it, did so recently and it seemed to start getting worse so I’ve started again.

I used to have a Butcher, basically a tweaked Heckler, built up with xt-level kit, it came in at 30lb inc dropper and a hefty pair of Lyriks so reckon you could easily get a Heckler under that

Heckler a great single pivot option imo

Agree with that lot, but the first one should include the rock garden above the tor. Also Win Hill cheeky/top of Parkin Clough/switchbacks in the woods. Potato Alley. Haggs Farm.

I’ve been riding in the Peaks for over 20 years on everything from fully rigid to my current 150mm full suss, all have been fun but to hit the rocky stuff full on you need something solid enough or with enough travel not to pinball. Depends on your preference really. I reckon it’s worth choosing a bike that excels in the sort of riding you enjoy (yeah, obviously )

Made a rack out of wood to lift in and out. Never used it cos couldn’t be arsed. Now use IKEA bed central support which is a metal groove in two pieces that is just wide enough for bike tyres, strapped to side of van with bits of pipe lagging to stop frames touching.KISS

All of the above. We started in Llanberis a couple of weeks ago in base layer/shorts, just before the cloud cover on the steps (Llanberis path) we put on fleece, waterproof, buff, winter gloves and were still freezing by the time we got to Rangers path.
One thing no one has mentioned is make sure all is good with your bike, I could give plenty of examples of the mountain eating bikes and/or kit. My recent visit had a pinch flat and the bottomless tokens in my Pikes rattle loose. That was a good result overall!
Have a great trip. It’ll take about 2 hours to walk up, take it steady and save energy for the fun bit.

Perfect place to explore best of the Dark Peak. Agree you should head West to do the classic Rushup/Roych/Jacobs loop, then head East on the other day to ride around Win Hill/Lockerbrook/Derwent Moor, if you look at a map you’ll see the bridleways form loops that you can link together to suit your fitness/inclination. Depends what you like but Blackley Clough (potato alley),Haggs Farm,Gores plantation, the Beast and routes off Derwent Moor are all great descents.

I stayed at the Glyncorrwg site a few years ago, a bit soulless and we had a visit from some local lads pretending to be into bikes obviously scoping out what we’d got so ended up dismantling get the bikes and motorbike-chaining them in my camper van, a bit of a squeeze but at least they were safe! That said,I’ve stayed there may be half a dozen times and this was an isolated incident. Otherwise it was functional with a cafe and bike shop as well as the usual facilities. Once we got completely soaked from constant rain and they let us leave our kit in the boiler room to dry. Oh,there’s a bike wash and bike hire facilities too, and Glyncorrwg trails from the site,Afan a short hop down the valley

My mate did this on a trip to Wales, calling into a car park for a refreshment stop. Took the roof rack with bikes still on it clean off, only a bit of damage to the bikes but lots to his new Lupo. Spoilt the weekend for him but amused me no end. Had to smirk quietly to myself though cos he’s a miserable git. Happy days!

I use worms if the cut is far enough from the bead, or a standard inner tube patch if too close to the bead for worms. If it’s a big hole I might then fill it with superglue

Been using nukeproof cheap plastic pedals for a couple of years now -called neutrons I think, or maybe electrons. Cost about £35, weigh v little, last for ages, and are as thin as feasible-win,win,win. I got them as a flattie try out after years on spds, expecting to upgrade but have never bothered because they are so good. Bought my dream bike with ideal build earlier this year and still spec’d the nukeproofs cos I saw no point in spending any more
