Make sure you put a poly vapour barrier on the inside of the walls. This is especially important if you put rigid insulation on the outside of the studs.

Also, make sure you seal all points where the vapour barrier is punctured I.e. wall fixings.

Is there a stat for the rider who has been in the most yellow jersey winning teams?

Here in Canada it’s descending rider gives way to climber. The climbs are typically steep here and you’ll have to push to the nearest flatter section if you stop.

    Nope. 2x

What “old cable”? I’ve never had a stealth post fitted before. Intended post is a Oneup, by the way.

I know this is a bit late but the game was on Sportsnet: sign up to SN and cancel it at any time.

Of course, it’s not free, but it’s not exactly pricey, either.

Wooooh, I’ve just about survived what Canadians laughingly call “spring” here. Dear God, a more miserable season has yet to be invented, and I haven’t seen the sun for 3 weeks. I thought London autumn was bad but I’m considering moving to Togo just to remember what sunshine looks and feels like…

Where are you? Spring here in Vancouver has been pretty nice.

Dear Lordy… Municipal Waste? Is that their best? 🥺 And Babymetal are generic? Hmmmm, actually, some of their other stuff is quite good. OTOH, Lady Baby seemed more like a tourist board ad 😳

MW are awesome. Nuff said \m/ \m/

Babymetal: Yes, the music is generic, metal-by-numbers. It’s not particularly interesting or original. The vocals are stuck on top in an attempt to produce something “new” but it just comes across as a gimmick.

Oh b’jezus.. that BabyMetal vid is properly dire.

Yeah, it’s bad: Generic metal riffs paired with bubblegum Japanese, schoolgirl vocals is a terrible idea and deserves to die a painful death.

Oh eff off with your Baby Metal bull plop. If that is what people consider metal these days then the genre is doomed. Give me…..

Yes he can but I find his playing incredibly dull. For me, it’s definitely a case of technique over musicality.

I saw AvL supporting Meshuggah a while back and they were good, yet boring.

What mattyfez describes is a Seyfert galaxy, or a quasar:

Actually, black holes themselves have been observed to “burp” matter. A quasar is a galaxy with an incredibly bright and active centre: it is likely this brightness and activity is the result of the presence of a black hole; either entirely, or in part.

I may be about to buy a 2009 Fender American Standard Strat. I’ve rented in from my local store to try out and thinking I’m going to complete the deal. It’s absolutely spotless, other than a yellowed pick guard, which is a little odd: I suspect it was a display model.

    It plays beautifully.

    Strat

A little more than £500, though. Sorry, felt like sharing.

I completely agree a cheap guitar can sound great, however, the sound is only part of the story: Cheap guitars often come with rubbish tuners, a poor nut, uninspiring pups, but there are always exceptions, of course.

Personally, I think £500-800 is the perfect price-range to get a guitar that will last you a long time and inspire you to play, without being stupidly expensive. Of course, you can turn a cheap guitar into a decent guitar by spending some money on it (new pups, a setup, a new nut, new tuners, fret dressing etc), but personally, I’d rather not have to.

Don’t get caught up in the “I’m not good enough to play a decent guitar” mindset – do you buy a crap bike because you aren’t Aaron Gwin? Regardless, Bbuy something you enjoy playing and you will get better.

Anything that relies on the subjective judgement of a person should not be in the Olympics, or any other major sporting event for that matter. Therefore, break dancing should not be there, unless it’s how many head spins you can do before puking, or something like that.

I hang out with a lot of Canadians in the UK, they all say the UK is better for a single person, but Canada is better if you have a family.

That’s a load of rubbish, for a start.

Of course, there are plenty of places to live in Canada: The country is beautiful left to right. I chose Vancouver because I’ve been coming here for 12 years mountain biking: I love the scenery, the trail networks, the fact I see bald eagles in the car park of my local mall walking to work in the mornings, the lakes, the rivers, the mountains, the outdoorsy lifestyle etc.; plus, it helps 2 of my best friends moved here years ago.

Is it expensive around Vancouver? Yes, but no more than living in central London, I would say. There are plenty of cheaper places to live, the further away from Vancouver you get, but it’s the same in England and proximity to London.

The only place I would probably stay away from is Toronto, but that’s me.

Regarding immigration lawyers: Of course, you don’t have to get one, but it is so much easier with one.

Just live outside of Vancouver: there are plenty of towns surrounding the city that are cheaper to live in than Vancouver. I live in a place called Coquitlam, which about 40 mins from downtown. Theres also Pitt Meadows, Maple ridge etc.

I’m 44 and did it last year.

    There are 2 ways:

    1) Apply for permanent residency from the UK: A friend of mine and his family did this years ago. I believe he was in his 50s. You will need an immigration lawyer to help you: Those who have tried to do it without have instantly regretted it and wished they’d used a lawyer from the beginning.

    2) Get a company to give you a job and sponsor your work permit/permanent residency application. My employer hired a specialist immigration law firm to handle everything. In the end we went down the route of the British Columbia Provincial Nomination Programme, which mean that you go through a pre-application process and once you are approved, you get invited to submit your application for Permanent Residency. Whilst your PR is being processed you are eligible for a work permit to work in Canada. This circumvents the Labor Market assessment programme, which can be awkward.

If you go down the route of a work permit (and not the BC PNP), your employer will have to prove to the authorities they have tried to fill the role from within Canada and can’t find the necessary skillset. A friend did it this way and was initially rejected. All it took was a slight alteration of the job description wording. It’s things like this that show the importance to have a properly qualified immigration lawyer on the case.

In my case, from the job interview to landing on Canadian soil took about 8 months. My PR application has now been in for 8 months, but the advised waiting time was 19 months, at the time of application. However, the times appear to be a worst case as they told me it would take 3 months to process my work permit and it only took 2 weeks.

Good luck. I can recommend it.

The best thing to do is to start the process. The Canadian immigration website has a test that will tell you if you have enough points to get in. You then need to start the lengthy process

TBH I wouldn’t bother with this test: At that age, and without a job offer, it will, almost certainly, fail you, and you’ll get discouraged and may not proceed further. IMO the best way after 30 is to get a company to sponsor you.

    Another NYXL 10-46 user here.

They’re what I’ve got on my Strat and PRS. Of course, the Charvel has whatever strings it came with, but I’ll probably stick with D’Addario when they need replacing.

    mikey74

I’ve never understood the point of locking tuners, rap the string properly and it won’t move. Always seemed a solution for a problem that doesn’t exist.

I’ve never had them, so I can’t comment: I’m primarily interested in tuners that work. However, I can see the theory behind locking tuners as it means you don’t have to wrap the strings around, which removes tuning instability due to poorly wrapped strings (yeah, I know: Learn to wrap strings properly). They probably aren’t as important on hardtails, either. It may be their main purpose is on strat-style guitars that have trems, but not locking nuts.

    Is that the Tele one?

No, it’s the Style 1, which is Strat-shaped. I quite like the tele-style one but I’ve never seen one in the flesh as most stores here don’t seem to stock them.

Fortunately, this Charvel comes with locking tuners that actually feel nice 😀

I’m in a similar situation as you, OP: I’m an architectural technician which, in isolation, I enjoy, but I’ve really grown to dislike the construction industry, especially how it is now.

The problem is I dont see a way out: I did the first 2 years of a 4 year geology course, before I got an offer that saw me move to Canada. I’d really like to complete it (especially as I was rather good at it: first class grades in everything I studied), as I love the subject, but I’m not sure I want to do it commercially, and turn an interest, that was originally a distraction from my day job, into to a career.

My point is, I wouldn’t necessarily go forward thinking you have to turn a passion into a career: As long as the work environment is a positive one, and you like what you do (you don’t have to be passionate about it), and it brings in enough money to live your life how you want to live it, then you cant really ask for more than that.

It doesn’t look anything like that. This is a 2017 model, with a Fender style headstock. The bridge pickup is a SD JB, as used by Jerry Cantrell and Jeff Beck. The other is a SD 59. I don’t have hair like that, either 😁.

Oh. and it’s a hardtail. It is white, though 😎

regarding tuning a floating trem, you just need to balance the trem in tuning, this involves retuning 4 or 5 times, to get that back(always tunning up as educator says).

It’s odd, but once you understand the how the floating trem needs balances it stays in tune for yonks. (mexi strat is my reference.)

I realise that. Staying in tune has never been a problem, it’s the process of retuning 4/5 times to get there. It’s especially annoying with crap tuners.

I guess my dislike of trems started when I had an Ibanez with a Floyd Rose about 25 years ago. Lovely guitar, apart from the mission that was changing tunings and installing new strings.

    Erm…. I might have bought a new guitar 😏

I went into my local store and they had a used Charvel Pro Mod San Dimas HH HT hanging there, with Seymour Duncans and locking tuners.

Technically, I’ve rented it for the week, but I can go in and pay for it in full any time. They’ll also take stuff in part-ex, so I’ll probably do that.

I’ve been looking for one of these since before I bought my Strat, but they’ve never had any in.

    mikey74

    Thanks, both.

You can block the trem quite easily with a small block of wood filed to shape and a couple of screws.

I thought of that but I’ve read it deadens the sound quite a bit.

Your suspicions sounds about right: New tuners come in a round $100 CAD here. And, yes: The neck is the 9.5″ radius variety. As a comparison, my PRS has a 20″ radius neck.

I probably wouldn’t sell it in its current condition, unless I made the buyer aware of the issues, which may reduce the sellability. If I keep it, and buy a new guitar, I might use this one as a crash test dummy to learn more advanced guitar maintenance.

Given what you’ve said I’d lean towards selling the Strat and find something you really like instead.

That’s easier said than done :-D

Sorry for the thread hijack, but seeing as the OP has resolved their dilemma, and this kinda [loosely] fits into the OP hypothesis, I thought I’d tack it on :-D

I have a Squire Strat Delux Hot Rails w/ Duncan Designed Hot Rail pickups: I bought it in a sale for $280 CAD as a way of getting back into playing guitar. I have since bought a PRS SE Marc Holcomb, which I love and use in either D standard or drop C. My Strat is generally used in E standard, E flat standard, or drop D.

I like the Strat, but it has some issues: The tuners and nut need replacing as the thing is extremely difficult to tune (the tuners are either all or nothing), it needs a setup (not a big deal, I know) and the frets need filing down as they are sharp and not properly seated top and bottom and the top E catches. I’ve estimated this work will cost around $300 CAD (based on the price list of a local shop).

I also don’t like trem units, and never use it, so it seems an unnecessary inconvenience.

Alternatively, I could buy a new guitar: Obviously, this would cost more money, but I’m wondering if dropping $300 on mods to a Squire Strat makes economic sense.

    Thoughts?

It is a Care Quality Commission issue:

Actually, it’s a planning issue as well: When the council considers a planning application they have to consider access, parking, amenities etc. The Building Regs contains quite specific guidance for access for fire fighting, and all major applications also have to incorporate consultation with the fire department over suitable access. If it isn’t the case at the moment, it should include provision for all emergency vehicles.

This incident seems to be a result of 1) poor planning of the facility, and 2) neighbour twattery of the highest order.

    mikey74

Can you imangine how crazy people are going to get when everything goes electric vehicles? The fighting over limited charging facilities and who is more entitled to the communal ones is going to be outstanding.

This is why the only way electric cars will completely take over is when they become self charging. Plugins are a short term option only.

With regard to the OP: Planning needs to take a lead on this and have better controls for parking provision, but that’s no excuse for people to act like t****. What kind of person abuses emergency staff while they are trying to do their job?
