Good call, Bunnyhop. Thanks.
I’m back there Saturday morning to peruse some fabrics, so I’ll take a closer look at the other work in the place.MikeT-23Free MemberIs it prudent to suggest that this thread is useless without pics?
MikeT-23Free MemberRight! Here is my chance….
When people write the word ‘loose’ when they really mean ‘lose’.
That really effing annoys me.
Does it make me a ‘looser’*? Maybe in the eyes of some, but I don’t care because at least I am literate. They are not.*played for laughs
MikeT-23Free MemberAt the moment?
These last two days I’ve been eyeing the 2011 Nissan X-Trail (2l diesel, in black or khaki) with more than a hint of desire.
Boring? Perhaps.
Attainable? Not without making sacrifices elsewhere and submitting to needless debt.
Likely? Nah.MikeT-23Free MemberThat helps a great deal, Monty, yes.
Thank you.We were not consulted re. the tenant’s choice of lift maintenance company/engineer and their subsequent choice of replacement autodialler. I can only hope that they went with a Memco or Windcrest system, but have a feeling that they might have chosen one of their own. Wouldn’t that be encouraged by the company?
As for the constancy of the safety line – we maintained it throughout the building’s unoccupied phase, as we knew we were obliged to do.
The LOLER situation, OTOH, I was not aware of.The tenant’s lease terms require that they look after the upkeep of ALL mechanical equipment during their tenure, so the LOLER issue is theirs now, but I shall remember that for future times (there are four buildings in the development, so the chances are it will become a concern in the next handful of years).
Thanks again, Monty – et al.
best regards
Mike

more info is always good.
TBH all I’ve told here is all I’ve been given via email from the tenant or their surveyor, except for the fact that the lift was installed new during construction and has been used like one would expect in a vacant building (i.e. not at all).
The tenant now has operatives in, including a disabled employee on the upper floor, so whatever has had to be done to get it working has obviously been done.
There is no reverting to the original status now.I just want to be aware if tenant’s KT engineer might’ve be ‘obliged’ to advise as they did, and push their own proprietary equipment. I can’t imagine they’d be as ignorant to the workings as I am (wet-behind-the-ears trainee in nothing-in-particular, with no relevant qualifications but learning-on-the-job!)
Strange thing is, though, the same tenant took the building next door (1 year older, but same size/layout/design and same lift equipment (Schindler) as soon as it was finished), and this issue didn’t occur then. As they have other properties in the Aberdeen area (and being in the oil industry, other properties around the globe), my presumption is that they would, more than likely, use thyssen krupp to attend to all their lift equipment on some larger maintenance contract.
Is it possible that the auto-dialler’s number was up, so to speak?MikeT-23Free MemberAmazing!
This forum never fails to surprise me in one way or another.
Liftman, you have hit new heights of popularity and elevated my mood beyond my expectations
[yes, old ones are best, but I thought they should be got out of the way first. Thanking you for your patience]The lift is indeed a Schindler model, either a 3100 a 3300 or a 5300 according to the front of the manual.
The tenant in the building concerned has brought in Thyssen Krupp to sort out an ‘issue’ not clearly described beyond the phone line being down.
We had maintained the BT line while the building lay unoccupied, and have the bills to show we paid for automated test calls, but new tenant claims phone had been disconnected (I had arranged for a line ownership transfer) and had to connect a new one via BT. They’ve also been charged around £1300 for a new autodialler supplied by TK.Dobbo – the new line is standard safety/comms line that, I understand, most (or all) personnel lifts require to have by law in case of emergencies. (?)
Flaperon – I’m not sure, but will mention it.
I really just want to know if it could be a genuine breakdown, or if there could be some jiggery going on – the timing’s too coincidental, and their surveyor is suggesting we retro-pin it to a snagging list, thereby passing the buck to us.
If it is a known issue in lift circles that you don’t mess with another man’s auto-dialler, then I am clearer as how to respond. Will keep powder dry until you respond gents. Thank you all.BTW, the lift is in Westhill, Aberdeen. I’m in Glasgow – not a convenient ‘pop out to check it’ distance.
MikeT-23Free Memberrecent convert to a foam one here too!
Got a Komfi Sleepsmart 700 after a fair bit of ‘lying and trying’ in a couple of different shops.
What helped was a discount from the friend of a friend who owned the shop, but after having it four months, I’m well pleased.
Like anything, though, you could pay lots if you want to.MikeT-23Free MemberIn boyhood years I had some experience with air-rifles/pistols when the opportunity was there, and also – through the cadets at school – got to try a .303 rimfire a few times. I wasn’t a bad shot, as it happens.
In recent years I have dabbled with air-rifles again, and bought a .22, but not being a countryside type I don’t get the chance to use it much. My work involves keeping an eye on a disused factory which local pigeons have found useful as a toilet – the temptation to ‘go to work’ in there has been strong. There’s plenty of dry, illuminated indoor space to get some target practice in before deciding whether I’d be skilful enough to take a clean shot at the birds though.
Tried clay-shooting too, as a bonding exercise with my dad – didnae last long! (but I didn’t shoot him, just in case I implied it) However, I did enjoy that, and proved to have some good hand/eye co-ordination. It’s a tad pricey though, so more of a rare treat than a regular pastime.
MikeT-23Free MemberI didn’t think BAD were that well-known, Grumm. Few contemporaries of mine at the time liked them, but then my taste in music was a wee bit different from theirs – more broad, perhaps – and proves to be so even now.
I suppose there are different ‘value for money’ options out there, such as the multi-band gigs/mini-festivals. They’d appeal to me more than a single big name act in a soulless exhibition venue by a regenerated waterfront somewhere, with over-priced beer in plastic tumblers and all the associated restrictions. That’s not an ‘experience’. To me, that’s a trial.
Compared to what some people are willing to pay, I’m fearful I’m coming across as a bit of a cheapskate by baulking at £31, but someone mentioned promoters and booking fees – in this case a booking fee amounting to almost the equivalent of VAT. That does smack of greed to me, and thus, like Plumber, I have to say NO! I’m not going to perpetuate this system. I’ll just stay hame and listen to the CDs/tapes instead.
Thanks for the views.
MikeT-23Free MemberThanks for the responses, everyone. Much appreciated.
If it happens, I’ll be sure to take in what I can from the list and let you know the ‘verdict’.
CheersMikeT-23Free MemberR8
Audi and Orange.
Easier to remember if they have the same model numbers!
MikeT-23Free Member£40pcm, Virgin Active, Glasgow.
Could be paying more elsewhere, but it’s very local and well kitted out for my limited needs, so fine for the moment.
MikeT-23Free MemberMy interpretation is that she’s eyeing it up to get a feel for its value, with the intention of getting you to sell it off to raise capital for her present.
Sorry, Zulu.MikeT-23Free Member‘Horse riding’ in its purest form!
So, is he what’s known as the mane offender in this case?
MikeT-23Free MemberTimeous thread! Nice.
An acquaintance told me that I can use an iPod on my PC with MediaMonkey, and fill it through that. I’d still need to download iTunes, but I’m not obliged to ‘use’ it. Great news.
Got my eye (and ear, I suppose) on a black iPod Classic – preferred for the large storage capacity. Could be the weekend’s big spend!MikeT-23Free MemberCynic-al
I see your dozen, and lower you by half!
Shocking, really.
MikeT-23Free MemberI have absolutely no use for one of these in my life as it is at the moment. But, is it odd that I want one after watching that?
Maybe the soundtrack helped sell it to me. Inspirational in a pioneering, frontier-bustin’ kind of way.
All in all – good find, good post.
MikeT-23Free MemberTony, I wondered about that too, and thanks for the link, but the windfall is nowhere near the prices being quoted there.
The guy I spoke to today talked of a £5k stake in a UK based trust, with a 12% return p.a. with a minimum three year term.
TBH, the guy I spoke to is an FA, and having sorted out some other stuff for me (life cover and pension plan) and other acquaintances, I am willing to at least listen, especially if he’s in already – for much more than I could go!MikeT-23Free MemberYou don’t happen to have my remastered copy of Dare by the Human League, do you? It’s got remixes on and everything. Bloody good, it is, but I cannae find it!
I’m undergoing a similar process, albeit with circa 1000 CDs and onto MediaMonkey. Recent joyous re-discoveries have included Portishead’s Dummy, The Bees’ Sunshine Hit Me, the two albums of Cousteau, and Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife Afro Sounds and Nigerian Blues, 1970 – 1976, and I’m only about 200 CDs into the job! More delights await, I hope.
You’re not the Ken Shields who writes the Diary in the (Glasgow) Herald newspaper by any chance, are you?
MikeT-23Free MemberYes, that concern crossed my mind too, Ernie, and I hoped to find some acceptable answers in my research. I’m happy to let you know if this is the case regarding the organisation suggested to me.
MikeT-23Free MemberLove the smell of a fresh G&T with lime wedges. Makes me kinda horny.
Rrrrrrrrr!
MikeT-23Free MemberBoyle’s child goes to nursery one block from my flat in Glasgow. Saw the guy a couple of weeks ago, draggin’ his kid home on a sledge.
He didnae find the paedo jokes so funny when ah cracked them!
Beardy bawbag.MikeT-23Free Memberactually….now that I’ve had a minute or two alone with it….it’s really not that good.
I mean……it’s alright as far as a bit of psych-rock goes, but don’t expect any life-changing tunes.
Perhaps I just got a bit carried away.Wan merr drink, then afftae bed!
MikeT-23Free MemberTon – you, me and the vast majority of the rest of us, bud!
Place of origin and price of purchase be damned – a minger is a minger, and I wouldnae be seen riding one either! 😐MikeT-23Free MemberIf it has any bearing on the disussion, I chose Orange because it is a British brand, and being of the age I am I still have a small part of my being that grasps, albeit weakly, to that as being part of something ‘Great’. There was never any suggestion of buying anything from anywhere else, and nor do I think there might be in the future.
Only after purchasing the first one did I bother to notice that there were alternatives within that strict parameter, but the Orange logo at the time – with the Union Jack wings – sold me! It reminded me of Victor comics, and exploring uncharted territories, and inventing the modern world we know today, along with many other ‘jolly wheezes’ (and I’m speaking as a Scot born in Ireland!). I’m also aware of the many negative associations that the flag has for other reasons, but there you go. I can’t deny it held a sway over me. Psychologists and marketeers can now step in with their views.
Oh, and I am aware this has nowt to do with the pricing concern that I introduced this thread with, but it seems to be flowing this way for me.
MikeT-23Free MemberAye well, it’ll be Halfords next time after all, but not for paint…..
It’ll be the whole bike I’m after!Didnae wish to be starting any arguments, and thanks to spock for giving a components pricing breakdown – it does put things into perspective.
My next Orange purchase will be limited to a T-shirt, but not in Kermit green.
MikeT-23Free MemberWell, I ain’t on often enough to worry about new rules, and I had a post pulled once (quite rightly, as: a)it involved stating an opinion as to whether I would, or wouldn’t, be keen on getting intimate with a dark-haired barmaid and ex-pop ‘star’ from Corrie (I would have); and b)I was drunk…..so I know how it feels to be censored.
Anyway, yadda yadda.
I just wanted to back up the OP on wishing you all the best for the festive season, whether you stick around here or not.
Enjoy yourselves.MikeT-23Free MemberLOL at Phil!
Great thread. Really.
Fills the heart with hope – the hope that one day in the not too distant future I can make a positive contribution of my own (in terms of a post here!)MikeT-23Free MemberI’m wi’ BoardinBob on the John Grant vote. Outstanding.
To be fair, I’ve not bought much else (Phantom Band and then some older releases), but reading this thread and seeing some of the magazine polls, I’ll cherry pick, and spend some of my xmas money wisely.
I do like Steve Mason’s work as well, now you mention it.MikeT-23Free MemberZoolander – I was thinking the very same thing earlier this week! Great minds, eh?
It may cost a bit more, but the long term savings may make it worthwhile.
I reckon all local authorities should insist that any new housing developments adopt such a system, and over time, with road upgrades and resurfacing projects, the idea be incorporated nationwide.Only drawback I foresee is the utility companies coming along and continuing this practice of digging up decent quality road/pavement surfaces to lay/repair their wares and finising off with something of a lesser quality than they dug up. I really can’t stand this lack of consistency which leaves us with a patchwork of blacktop in this country.
MikeT-23Free MemberIf only my calls were a bit more fruity, I wouldn’t be worried about my nostrils beeing exposed!
In fact, I have used it in the past when distanced from my daughter, and calling her mum’s phone to get a wee bit of face-to-face time. That’s important to me.
The fruity stuff? Nah.Still appreciative of all the input folks. Thanks again.
MikeT-23Free Member“My head is in a spin, my feet don’t touch the ground…”
Still no clearer, folks, but that’s more due to me being more sleep deprived than usual and choosing to engage in more screen time than is advisable right now.
I do appreciate your comments and suggestions. Thank you.b r – was the missing reason an ability to make phone calls? If not, please tell me what. It is a bit daft, I know, but we’ve been spoiled, and have come to expect so much from our widgetty-gadgetties.
loddrik – what was it about android that put you off? My initial thought is that you prefer something ‘familiar’. Is this right?
So far, then, I’ll peruse a Desire HD and a Sony Errikkssonn Experia…..
G’night.
MikeT-23Free MemberI reckon they should move the dry ski slope from outta town to there, and make it a year round option.
MikeT-23Free MemberAndy,
info I was not previously aware of. Re-reading the original comment, it all makes sense now, kinda. (Two large, strong beers down, and a day spent trying to work out a new phone….)
Paranoia reigns, as I thought you were referring to me as residing at Obama’s pleasure.Ampt – yup! I LOL when I dismount against my will, unnerving the more earnest of my fellow fitness freaks. I could excuse it as an endorphin rush, but screw that – it’s just funny, plain and simple.
MikeT-23Free MemberDear God Kimbers! If my local gym was attended by those types, I’d be letting my membership lapse.
I reckon the first one’s photo-shopped and the second one…..pre- or post-opped; it’s hard to tell.Andy, nae offence, but I don’t quite get your point.
I saw them, tried them, thought they were fun and wanted to share it. That’s all.Spoon – so true!
MikeT-23Free Membera bit sweaty, but that may depend on how hot the bulb that they’ve been buzzin’ is!
da-dum-TISH
MikeT-23Free MemberThat I was a fool to behave as I did, and now I’ve lost her forever.
In addition, time may be the healer but it doesn’t seem to be passing quickly enough, thereby prolonging the pain.MikeT-23Free MemberMay I heartily endorse BoardinBob’s suggestion of John Grant’s ‘Queen of Denmark’.
It is my album of the year – no argument. In fact, here’s a tip….go buy the music magazines such as Mojo, the Word, Uncut and so on. Their January issues (out around now) will have top lists for 2010, which may give you some guidance if you wish to do some compare/contrast exercises.
FWIW, Mojo’s number 1 album of 2010?……..John Grant’s ‘Queen of Denmark’.
Happy listening.
