Anyone able to confirm the oil details?

OK, fork stripped down and seals replaced. Ready to rebuild. Just a couple more questions.

Renewing oil:  15ml 15w into each lower leg through the bolt hole on the bottom, 180ml 5w into the non-air side before inserting motion control device ?

Rebound control knob doesn’t seem to click and rotates continuously, no end stop either way. Tried with Allen key as well. It did this before stripping down too. ?

    Thanks for any help.

Zafiras had a problem with the gearbox. Had one a few years ago, bearings went in the box. Known fault but Vauxhall wouldn’t acknowledge.

I had 3 Discoverys then had enough of regular bills. Changed to Shogun Sport (54) 3yrs ago. Been great until recently, big bills for unusual reasons. Would still have another in preference to Discovery but they stopped the model in 2006. Need something that will tow 3 tonnes but don’t like pickups.

Sometimes it can be about opportunity as well. At the moment I only seem to get out for a ride about once a month, mainly due to commitments with wife’s ponies and foster kids. Also, although I live in rural area there are actually not many off-road tracks close to the house so I have to ride roads to get to them, which I dislike.

Mountain biking is a state of mind, not a question of miles… Discuss.

@AD – that seemed to me what was required but I thought there ought to be something better.

    Seems a bit pointless.

We have both ground source and air source heating. GS installed in 2007 and AS in 2014 (when house was extended). We live in rural Aberdeenshire on a fairly exposed site.

First  I would reiterate many of the comments above – you need to use with an underfloor system because it operates at a lower temperature than other forms of heating, typically 45-50 degrees. Also the house should be fully insulated to current standards. Ours made sense as we did a complete renovation of an old croft cottage, stripping out the interior completely, and we have no gas supply so the alternative was LPG or oil.

The GS has a borehole to 110m depth which is generally OK but there have been occasions when we may have had problems with the flow but can’t confirm. There are one or two things I would change if I could but it’s a bit late now. When we had it installed we got a grant towards it – don’t know what’s available now – but it cost around £13k less £4k grant. There were also issues with the supplier/installer regime at the time which have, I believe, been sorted out which would probably make installation more straightforward.

The AS was installed when we converted (actually demolished and rebuilt) an adjacent byre. We couldn’t extend the GS so had to have a separate system.

It took some getting used to in terms of running the system. We were on Economy 10 electricity because it is a renewable resource, so I tried to run it around the 3 cheap rate periods. It proved difficult to control, particularly domestic water heating. Then I was advised, by the people who installed some PV panels later, that it is better to run the heat pump continuously and control the on/off cycles with individual room thermostats – this helps to maintain the temperature of the concrete floors rather than repeated heating and cooling. This certainly works better than the other way and the house is usually very warm and hot water available.

Cost-wise it is difficult to say. At the time we moved in we left a small semidetached cottage with 1 and1/2 bedrooms heated with oil to a 3 bed cottage. All our energy costs are the electric, so comparing to oil plus electric before, it wasn’t dissimilar for a larger house. 11 years on I don’t have anything as a comparison. Our electric bill is about £230/mth but we are currently about £900 in credit.

Hope that’s some help. If you have any specific questions feel free to ask and I can try to answer.

Thanks guys. I tried changing the sound effect to something less obtrusive. Also Vodafone app allowed me to turn off the notification dot, whatever that means. And long click on the notification allowed me to change importance to medium which has no sound. Now just waiting to see if any have worked.

OK for cats and dogs – 2 dogs, 3 cats. But where do we stand on equines – wife has 6 (1 horse, 3 ponies, 2 donkeys)? We seem to end up with bits of tack and other paraphernalia in every room of the house.

I’ve been a subscriber since the beginning and still enjoy reading the mag in print, but I have been thinking of stopping as there now seems to be too much travel content, particularly abroad. I don’t have the income to fund expensive foreign trips so they are of little interest to me. UK trips are of more interest but I would appreciate more information on the actual trails and kit.

While the kit reviews are interesting, mostly I can’t afford the sort of prices for things these days. My last bike was bought 2 years ago – a second-hand fat bike and the one before was 10 years ago bought at end of year discount. Bike reviews are mainly of interest to see what features may eventually trickle down to cheaper levels, I certainly can’t afford £3000+.

I do enjoy the comment columns as I don’t think this sort of content is covered by other magazines and it’s good to read about other riders take on mountain biking, eg why they do it and what they get from it. In this regard, I don’t seem to be able to find these on the website any more.

Perhaps a reader poll might be useful to see what people are looking for in the magazine?

For 1 & 2 I have used 1 & 1 Internet for years. You can have hosting for about £5/mth, they will register your domain name, you can set up email addresses through the control panel.

For 3, rather than try to learn php and databases, might be a lot easier to use a content management system like WordPress. Thousands of plugins to do virtually anything you might want. There is a shop plugin which, I think, is fairly comprehensive, probably more than you describe, but there is also probably something simpler. I have used WP but not for a shopping site. It would also help with security and SEO.

Think I’ve got it worked out – Feshiebrjdge to Ballintean to nearly Glenfeshie Lodge. Then up the hill and over to Corarnstilmore, then Baileguish, across the river.Back up through Inschriach to Torbreck and back to Feshiebridge car park. Good route, similar to one I did a couple of years ago.

@whitestone – definitely the track from Feshie Lodge to Corarnstilmore, the track by the river before that does look like the one from Feshie Bridge to Ballintean, but can’t figure the tracks after that.

    – not sure about the wall, difficult to tie these sections together as their loop.

Might be some artistic licence here in the sequence.

I have two cheap monitors which are probably OK for an average reading over a period. The chest strap one, a Polar FT!, gives  an average and a max reading over the recorded period. The wrist one, a Lenovo band, reads continuously and  can then be downloaded to an app which then shows a record of readings but as it only reads at 15 min intervals is useless for an accurate max reading. I guess it depends what information you are looking for and whether the monitor delivers that.

Most organised hacks from a stable yard would probably be about an hour and not cover more than 5 miles, depending on the competence of the riders. Individual riders might go out for a couple of hours and cover between 5 & 10 miles. I have, in the past, led long distance trail rides and we would ride around 5-6 hours a day for 20 – 25 miles, also depending on terrain.

I have a Ryobi petrol strimmer which has seen a good few years use but after replacing the crankcase gasket has never been the same.

I bought one of those 5-in-1 things. Strimmer Ok but tried the chainsaw and it stripped the gear in the head after 20 minutes use, Vibration from the engine means I can only use for about 1/2 hour before having to stop.

I also have a Draper strimmer which has been the best for about 3 years. Recently just stopped for no apparent reason. I discussed with their service department and they repaired under warranty despite the age (although I suspect this was down to the service engineer) and now it’s good to go again.

    breadcrumb – Member
I keep pop and beer in ours as it’s nice and cool.

We use the side door so coats get dumped in the utility which is toasty warm due to the boiler living in there.

Similar to breadcrumb, used to store wife’s baking paraphernalia plus beer/pop, multi-buys from Costco, excess chairs, box of backpacks.

The outer door is usually jammed shut and unusable over the colder months so we enter/exit through the extension at the other end of the house.

Same problem here. I’ve known for years that I have a loss of higher frequency sounds due to damage from working in noisy environments – mining and civil engineering. Dates from before there was any emphasis on ear defenders etc. I also have a problem with ear wax and narrow auditory channels.

Tried hearing aid, was of some use but had a problem with it getting blocked with wax so stopped using it.

Now find that I tend to avoid situations with background noise as I can’t differentiate speech unless actually looking at someone. Even in the car I can’t carry on a conversation because of the background noise. Drives my wife mad. I hate going out to places in crowds to the extent that I’m becoming a bit anti-social.

It’s not just recently downloaded tiles but those I downloaded last year, and used then, some of which are no longer visible.

I appreciate the idea of reinstalling as a possible solution but I would worry about losing all the previously downloaded maps and tracks that are stored on the phone. As I only use the Aviemore maps perhaps once a year, and my local maps are fine I’m thinking I might just ignore it for the time being. Unless there is a less drastic option.

Just an idea, but is it possible to delete a folder of maps and then re-download them?

I thought about uninstalling, but if I do this will I lose all my data (map tiles, tracks, etc.)
